The shape carries less style weight than people assume. Modern living room shelf decor is decided far more by the objects and the arrangement than by the outline of the shelf itself. How many pieces to hang, and why nine is usually too many

A nine-piece set is a kit, not a prescription. Hanging all nine on one wall is the most common way this goes wrong, and it is a farmhouse problem specifically: farmhouse styling relies on restraint and negative space, and nine modules filled with objects has neither.

Five or six pieces on a typical living room wall is plenty. Keep the rest for another room, or for the same wall a year later when you want to change it.

If you do hang all nine, the fix is to leave at least three of them empty. An empty module in a group of nine reads as intentional spacing. A group of nine all filled reads as storage, whatever style you were aiming for.

Natural pine is not a stable colour. It warms and deepens with light exposure over the first year or two, and it does not do so evenly — the parts nearest a window move faster.

For farmhouse that is a gift. Aged honey pine is closer to the target than fresh pale pine is, and the unevenness reads as age rather than as a defect.

Knots are the other thing. Real pine has them, they sit where the tree put them, and no two boards match the catalogue photo exactly. If the arrangement matters to you, lay the pieces out and put the busiest grain on the modules that will be least visible or most filled.

Before drilling nine sets of holes, it is worth testing the layout on the wall with paper. Nine modules is eighteen fixings and there is no undo.

One more height note specific to farmhouse: keep the bottom of the arrangement closer to the furniture than instinct suggests. Six to ten inches above a sofa back looks tight on the wall and correct in the room, because the two elements read as one group.
