Most decorative pieces do not need a stud. That is the part usually missing from how to find studs for wall art advice: a modern hollow-wall anchor carries far more than a light shelf or panel asks of it, and hunting for timber that is not where you want it wastes an afternoon.
Studs matter for weight and for leverage — a loaded shelf, a heavy mirror, anything a person might pull on.

How to find studs for wall art without a detector
- Knock along the wall. Hollow between studs, dull and solid over one. Do it with a knuckle at a steady height and the change is obvious once you have heard it twice.
- Look at the skirting. Nail heads or filled dimples in the skirting board are usually driven into studs, so a vertical line above one is a good bet.
- Start at a corner or a window. Framing runs from openings, so there is almost always a stud beside a door or window reveal.
- Follow the sockets. A socket box is normally fixed to the side of a stud, so there is timber immediately to one side of it.
- Use a magnet. A strong magnet dragged slowly across the wall finds the screws holding the board to the stud — slow, cheap and more reliable than a bargain detector.
Confirm with a fine bridle pin or a small drill bit before committing. A test hole the width of a pin fills invisibly.
Why 16 inch centres are a guess
Framing is often spaced at 16 in or 24 in, and that is a useful starting point rather than a rule.
Real walls have doubled studs at openings, extra timber at corners, noggins running horizontally, and stud spacing that drifts across a long wall.
Older houses are less regular still, and a wall that was once lath and plaster may have battens rather than studs behind a later skim.
So use the spacing to predict where to check next after you have found one, not to decide where a stud must be.
And expect the stud never to be where the piece wants to hang. That is the normal case, not bad luck.

The pattern is leverage rather than weight alone. A flat piece hanging close to the wall pulls straight down; a loaded shelf pulls the top fixing outward, and that is the direction anchors are weakest in.
The last row is not about the fixing at all. It is about what happens if a piece is treated as a handhold, and a stud is what makes that survivable.

Not all hollow-wall fixings are the same, and the cheap plastic plug that comes in the box is usually the worst of them.
Self-drive plasterboard anchors screw straight into the board with a screwdriver. Quick, decent for light loads, and they leave a large hole.
Metal toggles and spring toggles open behind the board and spread the load across a wide area. Much stronger, and the right choice for anything with a shelf.
Expanding metal anchors grip from behind and stay in place if the screw is removed, which makes them the practical choice on a piece you may take down and rehang.
What matters as much as the type is the board thickness the anchor is rated for. An anchor designed for 12.5 mm board in a thinner wall does not grip properly.
The batten trick
When the studs are in the wrong place and the load is real, the answer is a batten.
Screw a length of timber across two or more studs, then fix the piece anywhere along it. The batten spreads the load into the framing and gives you complete freedom horizontally.
Paint it the wall colour and it disappears behind the piece. On a run of shelves it is invisible entirely.
This is the standard trade solution for exactly the problem people try to solve with bigger anchors, and it is both stronger and cheaper.
It is also the only sensible answer for a run of pieces that must line up, since the batten guarantees a level line — the same reason a single line beats a chain when spacing a group of shelves.

Checking what you have hit
Drill and feel. A stud gives steady resistance and produces timber shavings; board gives almost none and produces white dust.
If the bit suddenly loses resistance a short way in, you have gone through the board into the cavity — stop and use an anchor rather than a wood screw.
If it stops dead almost immediately, you may have found a steel stud, a nail plate or a pipe protector. Do not force it. Move across and try again.
And always sweep the whole area with a detector for cables and pipes before drilling anywhere, whatever the wall is made of. Sockets and switches feed vertically, and above a sofa or a worktop is exactly where those runs live.
Keep the offcut of board or the dust from the first hole. It sounds fussy, but the colour and texture of what comes out tells you what the wall is made of, and that answers the anchor question faster than any amount of tapping. Grey dust with grit is masonry behind a skim; clean white powder is plasterboard; brown fibres are timber.

What each wall type means for the answer
Plasterboard on timber studs: the case above — anchors for light, studs or a batten for load.
Plasterboard on metal studs: anchors, not wood screws. Metal studs are thin and a screw into one is holding on very little.
Dot-and-dab board on masonry: the trickiest. There is a cavity behind the board and solid wall beyond it, so a long screw into the masonry is the strong answer, not an anchor spanning air.
Solid brick or block: no studs at all — plug and screw, sized to the plug, as covered in drilling into masonry.
Knowing which of these you have is worth five minutes with a knuckle and a magnet before buying anything at all.
What I would do
For a light shelf set or a decorative panel: two good metal anchors, spaced as wide as the hangers allow, and no stud hunt at all.
For anything holding books or bearing weight: find one stud, then fit a batten across two and stop worrying about where the framing happens to be.
And spend the money on the anchors rather than the detector. A pack of proper metal toggles costs less than a mediocre stud finder and does more for the result.
