Keyholes for light modules you may want to move; hidden brackets for shelves carrying real weight. How to use keyhole hangers for shelves and when to reach for something stronger comes down to load and to whether the shelf is meant to be permanent.
They are different tools, not better and worse ones. A keyhole is a hanging system; a bracket is a structural one.
The Houseland pine modules use keyhole hangers, which suits what they are: light display shelves that come off the wall in one movement.

How to use keyhole hangers for shelves, step by step
- Lay the piece face down and stick masking tape across both hangers.
- Mark through the tape at the top of each slot, which is where the screw ends up.
- Peel the tape off, stick it on the wall, and level it.
- Drill both holes, fit anchors suited to the wall, and drive the screws leaving each head slightly proud — about 3 mm (0.12 in).
- Lift the piece so the heads pass through the round openings, then let it drop into the slots.
The single most common error is marking the middle or the round part of the slot rather than the top, which makes the piece hang low — and unevenly if only one is wrong.

What a hidden bracket is doing instead
A hidden or floating bracket is a steel plate with rods that go into the wall, and the shelf slides onto the rods.
The load path is completely different. A keyhole hangs a piece from two points on its back; a bracket cantilevers the shelf from rods anchored in the structure, so it can carry far more and it puts far more strain on the wall.
That strain is why brackets want studs or solid masonry. A cantilever on a hollow wall with poor anchors is the classic way a floating shelf ends up on the floor with a chunk of plasterboard attached.
They are also permanent in practice. The shelf can be slid off, but the bracket stays, and the holes are larger.
There is a third system worth knowing about, sitting between the two: a cleat. A strip of timber with a bevelled edge screws to the wall, and a matching bevel on the back of the shelf hooks over it. Cleats spread the load along their whole length rather than at two points, they hang and lift off like a keyhole, and they are the standard way heavy mirrors and cabinets go up. The catch is that the shelf has to be built for one.

They come off. Lift a module away in one movement to dust behind it, repaint the wall, or take it to the next house.
They forgive. The slot gives a little sideways play, so a fixing a millimetre out is invisible.
They are cheap to correct. A wrong hole is a small hole, filled in a minute.
They leave less damage. Two small holes per module against a bracket's larger, deeper ones.
For anything rented, that last pair is the whole argument.
They tell you when they are overloaded. A keyhole-hung shelf that starts to lift at the front, or that will not sit flat any more, is reporting a problem while it is still a problem. A bracketed shelf gives much less warning: it holds and holds, and then the anchors let go all at once.

The advantages of brackets
Nothing shows. No plate, no visible fixing, and a shelf that appears to grow out of the wall.
Load. Properly fitted into studs, a bracket carries several times what a keyhole system will.
Rigidity. A bracketed shelf does not rock or lift at the front edge when weight moves.
Depth. Deeper shelves need the support a rod provides; a keyhole on a deep shelf is fighting leverage it cannot win.
If a shelf is genuinely storage — and especially if it is deep and loaded — the bracket is the honest choice.
Anchors, which decide both
Whichever system, the fixing into the wall is what actually fails.
For keyholes on plasterboard, use metal toggles or expanding metal anchors rather than the plastic plug in the box. The screw has to be left slightly proud, and self-drive anchors that rely on being driven fully home are a poor match.
For brackets, studs or solid masonry, every time. A hidden bracket on plasterboard alone is a shelf waiting to fail, whatever the packet claims.
On masonry, size the bit to the plug and drill the mortar where the load allows — the detail is in drilling into brick and concrete.
And if the studs are in the wrong place, a batten across two of them beats any anchor.
Check what the anchor is rated for as a pull-out load rather than a hanging one, since the two numbers differ and packaging tends to quote the flattering one. For a shelf, pull-out is the number that matters, because that is the direction a loaded shelf works in.

Fitting problems and their causes
The piece rocks. Screws too far out, or an anchor sitting proud of the wall surface.
The head will not pass the opening. Screw driven too far in; half a turn out usually solves it.
The shelf sits crooked. One fixing high. Redrill rather than compensating with screw depth.
A bracketed shelf droops at the front. The rods are not level, or the anchors are moving. Take it down and check before loading it again.
The shelf lifts at the front when loaded. On a keyhole system, that is the load telling you it wants a bracket.
The piece hangs an inch low. Almost always the classic marking error: the fixing was set to the round opening rather than the closed top of the slot. There is no adjustment for it — the hole has to move — which is why two minutes with masking tape is worth more than any amount of care with a tape measure.
What I would do
Keyholes for anything decorative, and metal anchors rather than plastic plugs. That covers light modules, display shelves and every rented wall.
Hidden brackets when the shelf is storage: deep, loaded, and staying put. Fitted into studs, with the level checked before anything goes on it.
And when in doubt about which, load the shelf mentally with what it will actually hold in a year rather than what it holds on the first day. Shelves get heavier over time, and the fixing decision is the one that is hard to revisit.
