Because “looks solid” and “is sealed” are different things. A coconut shell is a dense natural fibre with a grain, like wood. Cracks that follow that grain can be finer than a hair and invisible against dark brown, yet completely open.

At what temperature should coconut wax be poured?
Cooler than most tutorials suggest. Coconut wax has a low melt point, and pouring at 70°C or above does two things you do not want: it stays thin for longer, so it has more time to find a crack, and it shrinks more as it cools, pulling away from the shell wall and leaving a sink hole around the wick.
Melt fully, take it off the heat, add fragrance at around 60°C, then let it come down to roughly 50–55°C before it goes in. It should look slightly cloudy at the edges of the jug rather than glass-clear. Warm the shells first so the wax does not chill on contact and set unevenly.
None of this saves a cracked shell. It only stops you turning a marginal shell into a leaking one. Testing is the control that matters; temperature improves the finish.
Can a leaking shell be saved?
Sometimes, depending what the candle is for. If it is for your own shelf, brush a thin coat of melted beeswax or coconut wax into the dry inside, let it set for an hour, then pour the candle on top. The first coat plugs the fine cracks. It works often enough to be worth trying.
If you are making candles to sell, do not. A sealed shell can still weep months later on a customer's windowsill, and you will not be there to explain the repair. Reject it, use it as a plant pot, move on. One candle's margin is not worth a one-star review saying the wax melted through the bowl.
