Pendant Light Spacing Over a Kitchen Island: How Many?

Two pendants over an island under 7 ft, three only once the run reaches 8 ft. Keep at least 30 in between neighbouring centres, hold each shade about 12 in off the end of the counter, and take the shade width from the island's width rather than its length. Pendant light spacing over a kitchen island collapses on that last step more often than the other two, and how many you can fit falls straight out of it.

The awkward part is the two diameters Houseland lists: 9.8 in (25 cm) and 11.8 in (30 cm). Both sit under the width the standard sizing rule asks for once an island passes 36 in wide. I'll show that arithmetic rather than hide it, and name the island widths where each diameter is genuinely the right scale.

How Many Pendant Lights Over a Kitchen Island, and What Spacing Do You Need?

Island length sets the count, and the 30 in minimum between centres settles it. An island shorter than 5 ft takes one pendant, a 5 ft to 7 ft island takes two, and three stops being cramped only from 8 ft up. Work it backwards. Two lights placed by the standard method end up half the island's length apart, so a 5 ft run lands at exactly 30 in. Three lights need that 30 in gap twice over, plus roughly 18 in of clear run beyond each outer shade, which adds up to 8 ft of island before there is anywhere sensible to put them.

Visual Comfort frames the count loosely: smaller islands often do best with two pendants, larger ones typically call for three. Modern Place supplies the hard floors that turn that into arithmetic — at least 30 in between each light, no less than 6 in from the edge of a shade to the edge of the island, and about 12 in from the end of the island to the nearest shade edge. Those three do all the work; the rest is taste.

Where do two lights sit on a 6 ft island?

Divide the length by four and measure that distance in from each end. On a 6 ft island that is 18 in from each end, which puts the two centres 36 in apart — clear of the 30 in floor. Visual Comfort gives the same instruction and adds the coordinate people forget: find the midway point of the island's width, and that line carries both centres.

Run the same sum on an 8 ft island and you get 24 in in from each end and 48 in between centres. That is a long stretch of unlit counter in the middle, and it is the real reason a long island looks better with three smaller shades than two marooned ones. Modern Place's own two-light range starts at 24 in apart, so 48 in sits at the far edge of balanced.

Do the published three-light formulas actually clear 30 in?

No — run either published formula on an 8 ft island and it breaks the 30 in rule printed further up the same page. Visual Comfort says to hang the middle one dead centre, then divide the island's length by three to place the outer pair from their respective sides. On an 8 ft island that puts the outer marks 32 in from each end, and the gap between neighbours comes out at 16 in. That is half the minimum.

Modern Place's method divides the island into four sections and hangs a light at each of the three inner points, which on an 8 ft island is 24 in between centres — still short of the 30 in the same article calls a floor. Both formulas are written for the end margins and ignore what happens in between. Work from the gap instead: set the middle shade dead centre on both axes, push the outer two out to 30 in from it, apart, then check the ends. On an 8 ft island that leaves 18 in of run past each outer shade, clearing the 12 in end rule with room to spare.

Coverage is the other half of it. The IESNA levels tabulated for kitchen and food prep areas are 30 to 75 footcandles, or 300 to 750 lux, on the work surface — which is why a long island with two widely spaced shades reads bright under each one and dim in the middle where you chop.

9.8 in vs 11.8 in: which shade fits your island width?

Neither diameter reaches the sizing band on a standard 36 in wide island, and I would rather say so than take the order. Both sources give the same rule: each shade should be one-third to one-half as wide as the island. Modern Place spells the example out — a 3 ft wide island wants a shade 12 in to 18 in across. Our larger shade is 11.8 in, which lands just under the bottom of that band on a 36 in island and well under it on anything wider.

Turn the rule around and it tells you which island each size does suit. A shade sits inside the band when the island is between two and three times its width. That puts the 11.8 in shade genuinely at home on an island roughly 24 in to 35 in wide, and the 9.8 in on a narrow island or a peninsula under about 30 in. On a 40 in wide island neither is right for a two-light run, and a 14 in or 16 in shade from a wider catalogue will look better. Three of the small shades in a row is the honest exception: both sources treat a long island as taking two large fixtures or three smaller ones, and a trio of 9.8 in shades reads as rhythm rather than as an undersized pair.

Houseland publishes a painted metal shade and an E27 socket for both sizes and nothing at all about shade height, so mixing two styles in one row is a gamble on them hanging level. Checking the dimension you need before you order costs nothing and saves a return.

How do I lay out the ceiling boxes before anyone drills?

Mark the ceiling in chalk and live with it for a day before anyone cuts a hole. The boxes are the part you cannot undo cheaply, and they usually go in weeks before the lights.

1. Measure the island top twice, length and width, and write both down.
2. Snap a chalk line on the ceiling above the centre line of the island's width.
3. Mark the midpoint of that line, then step the outer marks out until neighbours are 30 in apart.
4. Check the margins: at least 12 in from the island's end to the nearest shade edge, and never under 6 in from a rim to the counter edge.
5. Cut paper discs at the diameter you plan to buy, tape them up, and look from the doorway and from a stool.
6. Only then let the boxes be cut.

Wiring is not a casual DIY step, and the rule depends on where you live. In England, Part P stopped treating kitchens as a special location in 2013, so adding a lighting point to an existing circuit there is no longer notifiable, while a new circuit or a consumer unit change still is. In the United States the box itself is the thing to check: NEC 314.27 requires a ceiling outlet box to support 50 lb, and anything heavier has to be carried independently of the box. What if the boxes are already cut in the wrong place?

Live with them if the gap is 30 in or more, and choose the shade to fit the gap you were given. A homeowner on Houzz found the builder had set three rough-ins 30 in on centre above a 10.3 ft island and worried they were too tight; the designer who answered said the spacing works unless the pendants are really large. The homeowner's own ceiling was 14 in of shade, and that is the practical cap: at 30 in on centre, a shade much past 14 in crowds its neighbour.

Moving a box is a different job from adding one. A blank plate over the old hole is legal and ugly, and patching plasterboard is the honest cost — in a kitchen that usually means skimming the whole plane so the repair does not show in raking light. It is worth paying once. Space three shades evenly along a 5 ft island and neighbours land 20 in apart, leaving about 8 in of daylight between the rims of the larger size. That is the caterpillar people describe afterwards, and two shades sit 30 in apart instead.

What I'd do

Measure the width first, then the length, and let the width veto the shade. On an island 30 in to 35 in wide I would hang two of the 11.8 in shades and stop thinking about it. On a 36 in or wider island I would either run three of the 9.8 in shades along an 8 ft island, where rhythm carries the scale, or buy a wider shade elsewhere — a two-light row of undersized shades never stops looking slightly wrong.
