Spotlight Spacing by Ceiling Height: How Far Apart?

For a 13 ft by 11 ft 6 in room under an 8 ft (2.4 m) ceiling, the halving rule asks for six to nine spotlights and the designer's rule asks for four. Neither answer holds once you know the beam is narrow: a 24 degree spot drops a pool only about 2.3 ft wide onto a desk, so spotlight spacing worked off ceiling height alone tells you how far apart to drill and nothing about whether the floor is covered.

Buy two to four and aim each one at something — a counter, a picture, the chair you read in — then get the ambient layer from a different fixture. The Houseland listing publishes a 24 degree beam angle and a choice of 7W, 10W, 12W, 15W or 20W, and no lumen output and no spacing criterion, so every figure below is geometry rather than a photometric file.

What spacing do spotlights need for your ceiling height?

Halve the ceiling height and put that much distance between fittings. Take Three Lighting states it in one line, "take the ceiling height and divide by two", which puts fittings on 4 ft centres under an 8 ft ceiling and 5 ft centres under a 10 ft one. The same page adds a wall rule: keep them "at least 2 to 3 feet away from the edge of the ceiling where it meets the wall", because a fitting pushed hard against a wall paints a scallop rather than a pool.

Run it on the room. Take 2.5 ft off each end of the 13 ft length and 8 ft of run is left, which is two gaps of 4 ft, so three fittings. The 11 ft 6 in width leaves 6.5 ft of run, one gap, so two rows. The halving rule lands on six fittings for a room this size, and nine if you stretch to three rows. That is the swiss-cheese ceiling people regret, and the rule behind it was written for wide recessed cans, not for a narrow spot.

Why does the designer's rule buy fewer fittings?

It measures from the working plane instead of from the floor, and that single change roughly halves the count. ERCO's rule is that "the luminaire spacing (d) between two downlights may be up to 1.5 times the height (h) of the luminaire above the working plane", and that "half the luminaire spacing (d) is recommended for the distance to the wall (a)". The working plane is a convention, not your floor: 30 in (0.76 m) above the floor in US practice, 33.5 in (0.85 m) in Europe.

Put the 8 ft ceiling through it. Height above a desk is 5.5 ft, so spacing may run to 8.25 ft and the wall setback to roughly 4 ft. Along a 13 ft length that is two fittings with a 5 ft gap, comfortably inside the limit, and the width takes two rows. The designer's method gives four fittings where the halving rule gave six to nine, and neither is wrong — they are measuring from different heights.

The third method belongs to the maker, and it is shut to you here. Spacing Distance = Spacing Criteria (SC) x Mounting Height (MH), where SC is "a number usually between 0.5 and 1.5 that is assigned by the manufacturer to a specific fixture" and normally sits on a spec sheet. No SC value is published for this spot, so the arithmetic has to come from the beam instead. Spacing questions share a shape: the object's own spread sets the gap, which is why cube shelves are spaced by their own width rather than by the width of the wall.

How wide is the pool from a 24 degree beam?

About 2.3 ft across a desk and 3.4 ft across the floor, measured from an 8 ft ceiling. The geometry is the one Lamp HQ sets out — diameter = 2 x distance x tan(half the beam angle) — and it checks out against their own table, which gives a 15 degree beam a 2.1 ft pool and a 30 degree beam a 4.3 ft pool at 8 ft.

Read that edge honestly. Beam angle is defined as "the area where the lamp radiates at least half (50%) of its maximum luminous intensity", so the rim of every pool in that table is already down to half brightness, and the part that reads as properly lit is smaller again. A 4 ft gap between two fittings that each cover 2.3 ft leaves 1.7 ft of ceiling-lit nothing in between, which the eye reads as banding on the floor and as scallops where the beam clips a wall.

So how many of these spotlights do I actually need?

Two to four if you are aiming them at things, and about twenty if you expect them to light the room by themselves. Pools 2.3 ft wide only meet if the fittings sit on 2.3 ft centres, and across 8 ft of usable length by 6.5 ft of usable width that works out at five columns by four rows.

Nobody installs twenty spots in a 13 ft room, which is the useful part of the calculation: it is proof that the fixture is not an ambient one, not an argument for a bigger order. Four of these will light four things beautifully and still leave a room that reads dim, because 4 x 2.3 ft of pool is under 10 ft of lit floor out of roughly 150 sq ft.

The reverse mistake costs as much. Six on a fixed grid gives bright discs on the carpet, shadowed corners and six visible bodies overhead, and a surface-mounted body cannot be nudged a foot left later.

Narrow spot vs wide downlight: which one lights a whole room?

The wide one, and it is not close. BRANZ Bulletin 647 puts it at section 5.1.1: "A beam angle of 60 degrees is recommended for general lighting, while a narrow beam can be used for highlighting a display piece." A 24 degree fitting is the display-piece half of that sentence.

Pick the alternative when the brief is even light. A uniformly bright room is better served by wide-beam downlights or one track fed from the wire already in your ceiling; a spot earns its place afterwards, on the wall you want people to look at — the same logic that makes a blank hallway wall worth aiming light at.

What should you check before ordering the second one?

Check the mounting type first, because it decides whether a saw comes into this at all.

1. Recessed or surface mounted? The listing name says downlights while the spec table says Surface Mounted LED Downlight, and those are two different jobs — one cuts a hole in the ceiling, the other sits on its face. Resolve that with the seller before you plan any grid.
2. Where does the power come from? One wire feeds one point. Four fittings means new wiring, and in England the Planning Portal lists "the installation of a complete new circuit - for example, a ring or lighting circuit" as notifiable under Part P, with alterations to existing circuits notifiable only in special locations; a registered competent person can self-certify it. In the US the rule is local: Portland requires a residential electrical permit "to add new receptacles (plugs) and lights", homeowners may do their own work on a house they live in, and New York City requires a Licensed Master Electrician. Ask your own building department before, not after.
3. How bright is one of them? Houseland does not publish a lumen output for this fixture, only the 7W to 20W wattage band and Warm White 3000K, Neutral White 4000K or Cool White 6000K. For a general sense of scale, BRANZ Bulletin 647 puts 700 lumens near an 8 W LED lamp and 1,400 lumens near 15 W - that is a broad industry comparison, not a figure for this product. The lumen number, if it exists, will be on the fixture label or the box.
4. Is it going anywhere damp? No IP rating is published, so the honest answer for a bathroom zone, a shower area or a covered porch is no. A fitting with no declared IP cannot be shown to meet a bathroom minimum, and the US rules turn on a marking this one does not carry.
5. What is the electrical envelope? Houseland lists AC85V-260V, which covers both common mains bands, and CRI 98 - that CRI figure comes from the source title we were given rather than from a measurement we made, so treat it as the supplier's claim. Where the cable ends up longer than the run needs, there are tidier fixes than coiling it.

What I'd do

Order two, wire them to the point that already exists, and aim rather than space. The sofa wall and the worktop are the two things in a 13 ft room that reward a narrow beam; the middle of the floor is not one of them.

For a picture, set the fitting back from the wall by eye height x 0.6 - Take Three Lighting's rule, where eye height runs from the ceiling to the point you look at, about a third down the frame - and let the light land at 30 degrees so glass does not throw the beam back at you. If a row of deliberate scallops down a wall is what you want, the same page says to space them twice as far apart as their setback, so a 2 ft setback wants 4 ft centres.

Then buy the ambient layer separately: a pendant, a wide-beam ceiling fixture, or a pair of plug-in lamps. Two spots plus one broad source will beat six spots on a grid in the same room, for less money and with a quieter ceiling.
