Painted wood reads architectural; wire metal reads industrial. Neither is more modern than the other, but they belong to different versions of modern, and choosing black hexagon shelves for modern living room walls is mostly about which of those two the rest of the room is already speaking.

Wire and tube metal came out of workshop and warehouse furniture. It reads as light, open and slightly technical, and it works when the room has other hard materials in it.
Painted timber reads as joinery. It has mass, a matte face and square edges, so it sits with plaster, wool and wood rather than against them.
The mistake is treating one as newer. Both have been current for a decade, and what dates either is the styling around it — wire hexagons with fairy lights, or wooden ones stuffed with knick-knacks.
Look at the largest hard surfaces in the room and match the family. That single check settles it more reliably than any trend argument.

The tipping row is what sends most wire shelves back. Anything with a small or rounded base needs a flat surface, and a wire base is not one.
People solve it by cutting a piece of board or cork to sit inside — at which point the shelf has become a solid one with extra steps.

How they age
Painted timber picks up edge scuffs and chips at the corners. Both are repairable: a matte touch-up disappears at normal viewing distance because there is no sheen to break.
Powder-coated metal is tougher until it is chipped, and then it rusts from that point in a damp room. A chip in metal is a permanent defect in a way a chip in painted wood is not.
Thin wire also bends. A knock that would dent timber will distort a wire frame out of square, and once bent it never quite reads as parallel again.
For a hallway or any wall that gets brushed past, repairability is worth more than hardness — touching up a scratched black finish covers how easy that is on matte wood.

Wire modules weigh very little, which is a genuine advantage on plasterboard: more of the fixing's capacity is left for what you put in them.
Solid modules weigh more before anything goes on them, though at this size the difference is modest — the Houseland pieces are 0.6 in board and rated to 5 kg (11 lb) each.
What matters more than either is where the load sits. Weight at the front edge pulls the top fixing away from the wall regardless of what the module is made of.
And both types usually arrive with the same weak plastic plugs, which is the actual limiting factor in most installations — choosing proper anchors matters more than the material.

Light, shadow and how the shape reads
A solid black hexagon on a pale wall is a hard outline with a shadow inside it. The shape reads clearly from across a room.
A wire hexagon is a line drawing with the wall visible through it, so it reads lighter and, on a busy wall, can disappear into whatever is behind it.
In a small room the wire version takes up less visual space, which is a real argument for it.
In a large room the solid version holds a wall that a wire one would be lost on.
Neither reads well against a patterned wall, since both are competing with a pattern that will win.
Cost, and where the money goes
Wire modules are usually cheaper per piece, and sets of them tend to be larger.
Solid modules cost more because there is more material, and painted timber has a finish that has to be applied evenly to look right.
The place the difference shows is the edges. A cheap solid module has visible joins and thin board; a cheap wire one has weld marks and inconsistent coating.
Whichever you choose, look at the corners in the photographs. They are where manufacturing quality is visible and where sellers rarely retouch.
Delivery damage is worth factoring in as well. Wire frames arrive bent more often than timber arrives broken, because a distorted frame survives a courier's handling in a way that still looks acceptable in the box and only reveals itself on the wall. Check a wire module against a straight edge before drilling anything; a solid one either arrived square or obviously did not.
Styling each one so it looks intentional
- Solid modules: pale objects for contrast, one plant, half the modules empty, and everything with a flat base.
- Wire modules: larger objects rather than small ones, and a flat insert wherever anything round has to stand.
- Repeat one material across the group in both cases — three ceramics, or three touches of the same wood.
- Keep gaps identical, and smaller than the modules themselves.
- Leave the group inside an imaginary rectangle so it has a boundary.
The styling rules are almost identical, which is another sign that the choice is about material rather than about method.

Which suits which room
Wire: a room with exposed brick, concrete, leather, black metal window frames, or an open-plan space with industrial lighting.
Solid painted: a room with plaster walls, wool and cotton textures, timber floors, or a japandi or mid-century scheme.
Either: a plain modern room with white walls and a grey sofa, where the deciding factor becomes what else is on the walls.
Where a room mixes both languages — and many do — look at the light fittings. They are usually the clearest statement of which direction the room is leaning.
One more test for a room that resists categorising: look at the door and window furniture. Black metal handles and slim frames pull a room towards the industrial side, while timber or brushed brass pulls it the other way. Those details are chosen once and rarely changed, which makes them a more reliable guide than a sofa or a rug.
What I would do
Solid painted timber, on a plain wall, with half the modules empty and pale objects in the rest.
It reads as joinery rather than as a storage product, it holds anything with a flat base, and every mark it picks up can be touched out.
Wire only in a room that already has hard industrial materials in it, and even then with a flat insert cut for any module that has to hold something round.
