Using modular shelves to fill a blank wall works when the arrangement is sized to the wall first and filled second. The usual failure is the reverse: pieces go up wherever they fit, objects go on afterwards, and the result reads as storage rather than as composition.

The number to start from is the width of the arrangement against the width of the wall. An eight-piece run laid out as designed covers about 41 in wide by 22 in tall (104 x 56 cm), which suits a wall of roughly 60 to 80 in. On a wall twice that, the same eight pieces need to be grouped rather than spread.

How do you use modular shelves to fill a blank wall properly?

Size the arrangement to about two thirds of the wall width, then compose within it.

1. Measure the wall and take two thirds of its width. On a 72 in wall that is 48 in — the arrangement lives inside that, and the remaining third is the breathing room around it.
2. Set the vertical centre at 57 to 60 in from the floor where there is no furniture below, which is the standard picture centre line and the height a room reads at.
3. Lay the pieces out on the floor first. An arrangement 41 x 22 in can be tried five ways in ten minutes on a floor and takes an hour a version on a wall.
4. Photograph each layout from standing height. A phone flattens the arrangement the way the eye does from across a room, and the weak version is obvious in a photograph and not on the floor.
5. Mark the top edge of every piece with tape before drilling. Sixteen holes is a lot to get wrong.

Where furniture sits below, the centre line moves. A run above a desk or a worktable wants its lowest piece 16 to 20 in above the surface, and everything else stacks up from there rather than from a rule about the room.

Where should the gaps go in a modular arrangement?

At the edges and in one place inside, never distributed evenly.

Even spacing between every module produces a grid, and a grid reads as shelving. What makes a modular wall read as composition is variation: two pieces close together, then a gap, then one piece offset. The eye follows the rhythm rather than counting the units.

The reliable version is to cluster the boxes and let the ledges reach away from the cluster. Three open boxes stacked with 2 to 4 in between them make a dense block; two ledges running off that block at different heights give the arrangement direction. Hexagons then sit at the edge of the cluster, where their angled sides do something rather than fighting a square neighbour.

The gap that matters most is the one at the outside. An arrangement that reaches within 6 in of a corner or a door frame looks like it ran out of wall. Keeping 12 in clear on every side is what makes the same pieces look chosen rather than fitted.

How full should the shelves be?

Around two thirds, counting by module rather than by object.

Two thirds is not a rule about tidiness; it is about giving the shapes somewhere to be seen. A hexagon with one object in it shows its geometry. The same hexagon packed to the edges is a container, and the shape stops registering at all.

Weight rewards the same restraint. At up to 5 kg per piece, a module holding four hardback books is close to full, and an arrangement where every module is loaded to its limit will show more deflection across the run than one loaded at half.

What suits a long wall rather than a square one?

A horizontal run with the boxes grouped at one end, rather than a symmetrical arrangement centred on the middle.

Long walls punish symmetry. Anything centred on a 12 ft wall has 5 ft of empty plaster on each side, and the arrangement reads as small rather than as balanced. The composition that works is weighted: the dense group sits at roughly a third of the way along, and the ledges extend from it towards the longer side.

This is also where the depth figure helps. At the 3.5 in (9 cm) depth Houseland builds these to, a run of modules along a circulation route does not narrow the space in any meaningful way, so a long wall in a hallway or a landing is available in a way that a deeper shelving system would not be.

On a very long wall, the honest alternative is two groups rather than one stretched arrangement. Two clusters separated by 3 ft of blank wall look intentional; the same pieces spaced evenly across 12 ft look like a shelf company's catalogue photograph.

Does a modular set work in a craft or utility room?

Better than in most rooms, because the objects have real variety in size and the arrangement can be planned around them.

A workroom wall has an advantage a living room does not: you know exactly what goes on it. Rolls of paper, jars of tools, spools, tins, a plant. Mixed module sizes suit that mix directly, where a run of identical shelves wastes height above every short object.

Two practical points apply in a workroom specifically. Put the heaviest and most-used items at 40 to 55 in from the floor, which is the band you can reach without stretching or crouching, and keep the top modules for things touched monthly. And leave one ledge deliberately empty as working space — a shelf that can take whatever is in your hands is worth more than one more container.

Keyhole hangers make this arrangement easier to revise than it looks. A module can be lifted off and rehung a few inches away with two new holes rather than a rebuild, so a workroom wall can evolve as the work does. What I'd do

Lay the eight pieces out on the floor, photograph three arrangements, and put up the one that looks best flattened rather than the one that felt best while arranging it.

Then fill two thirds of the modules and stop. The instinct on a newly hung wall is to keep going until it looks finished, and a modular arrangement looks finished about three objects before most people stop adding.

If the wall is large enough that one 41 in group looks lost, split the set into two clusters rather than stretching it. Two groups of four with real blank wall between them is a stronger composition than eight pieces evenly spaced, and it is the same box of parts.
