How to Center Wall Art on a Wall That Is Not Symmetrical

The short version of how to center wall art on a wall: find the clear span rather than the whole wall, halve it, then check the answer against the furniture below before a single hole is drilled.

The wall's true middle is almost never where you want the piece. Doors, switches, radiators and a sofa that sits off to one side all move the point the eye reads as the centre, and the eye beats the tape measure every time.

How to center wall art on a wall: measure the clear span

Start by deciding what the wall actually is. Not the plaster from corner to corner, but the part a viewer reads as a field for the art.

A door architrave ends the wall. So does a tall bookcase, a radiator that reaches most of the way up, and in practice a light switch, since a piece hung over or beside a switch always looks like it is dodging something.

Measure between those two limits and halve it. That is the working centreline, and it is often several inches from the geometric middle.

Mark it lightly at about eye height with a pencil, not tape. Tape moves, and the whole method depends on this one mark being trustworthy for the next ten minutes.

Then check it against what is below

A centreline that ignores the furniture is how pieces end up looking subtly wrong for years.

If a sofa, console or bed sits under the piece, that object is the strongest horizontal in view and the art has to agree with it. Centre on the furniture, even if that puts the piece off the wall's centre.

If nothing sits below, the wall's clear span wins and your first mark stands.

When the furniture centre and the clear-span centre are within an inch or two of each other, take the furniture. Nobody has ever noticed a piece being an inch off a wall's middle; a piece an inch off the sofa's middle is visible from across the room.

A quick way to settle the argument between the two centres: stand where you normally sit, close one eye and look at the wall as a whole. Whichever object dominates that view is the one to centre on. From a doorway the wall itself dominates; from a sofa the furniture does, and you spend far more hours in the second position than the first.

Height, and the mistake of measuring from the ceiling

Centre horizontally, position vertically — they are two separate decisions and only the first is about the middle of anything.

Work up from the floor or from the furniture, never down from the ceiling. Ceilings vary, and in an older house they are rarely level, so a measurement taken from above puts a run of pieces at slightly different heights along one wall.

The usual starting point is the centre of the piece at standing eye level, then adjust down if it sits over furniture so the gap to the furniture stays modest.

For a vertical piece, remember that the visual centre and the physical centre are not always the same point. A capsule panel with a shelf across it reads from the shelf line, so that line, not the midpoint of the panel, is what should land where you want it.

Marking the fixing instead of the frame

Everything up to now has been about where the piece goes. This step is about where the hole goes, and mixing them up is the most common reason for a second set of holes.

1. Hold the piece against the wall on your centreline, at the height you have settled on, and mark the top edge lightly.
2. Turn the piece over and measure from its top edge down to the hanger — keyhole slot, bracket or D-ring.
3. Transfer exactly that distance below your top-edge mark. That is the hole.
4. For two fixings, measure between the hangers on the piece and split that distance either side of the centreline. Never measure between the holes on the wall first.
5. Check the two marks are level with each other before drilling, not after.

When the wall refuses to cooperate

A switch or socket near the centre. Do not straddle it. Move the piece decisively to one side and let the switch sit in open wall, or choose a piece narrow enough to clear it. A near miss looks worse than an obvious offset.

A chimney breast. The breast is its own wall. Centre on the breast and ignore the alcoves either side entirely.

A radiator below. Centre on the radiator if it is the dominant object, but leave real clearance above it — rising heat and a hand-textured finish are not friends over the long term.

A sloped or panelled wall. Line up with the panelling rather than the room. Any strong line already on the wall becomes the reference the eye uses, and fighting it never works.

Two pieces on one wall. Treat the pair as a single object and centre that object, rather than centring either piece. The gap between them belongs to the composition, so it should be smaller than the width of either piece, otherwise the eye stops grouping them and starts reading two separate mistakes.

Getting it level, and keeping it there

Level the piece by the strongest horizontal line it contains. On a panel with a shelf, that is the shelf. On a plain rectangle, it is the top edge.

Check the level after hanging, not just the marks before drilling. Keyhole hangers give a little play, and a piece can end up a degree off even when both fixings are perfect.

Then check it again the next day. Anything hung on a hollow wall settles slightly as the anchor takes up its load, and a quick nudge on day two saves noticing it every day after.

Small clear bumpers on the bottom corners help a piece stay put and stop the back rubbing marks into paint. On a backlit design they do a second job as well, by keeping the gap behind the piece even so the halo does not go patchy — the same issue covered in hanging a tonal piece on a pale wall.

What I would do

Cut a paper template. It costs five minutes, it removes every guess about scale and position, and it is the only way to judge a centreline from the far side of the room where you will actually see the piece.

Tape it up, live with it for an evening, and move it once. Then mark through the template for the fixing so the hole position comes from the template rather than from a second round of measuring.

If you are working on masonry, get the position right before you start — holes in brick and concrete are far less forgiving than holes in plasterboard, and a spare set is a repair rather than a filler job.
