How to Style Wall Sconces Above a Sofa in a Living Room

Styling wall sconces above a sofa is a symmetry problem, and the symmetry has to come from the furniture rather than from the wall. A pair set out from the wall's centre looks wrong the moment the sofa is not centred on it — which is most of the time.

The numbers are straightforward once that is settled. Space the pair a third to a half of the sofa width apart, centred on the sofa, and hang them 18 to 24 in above the sofa back.

How do I style wall sconces above a sofa so the pair reads correctly?

Set everything from the sofa's centre line and check it from the doorway.

1. Mark the sofa's centre on the wall with tape before measuring anything else. That line, not the wall's centre, is the reference.
2. Space the pair a third to a half of the sofa width apart. On an 84 in sofa that is 28 to 42 in between centres.
3. Hang them 18 to 24 in above the sofa back. Lower and they crowd the seating; higher and they belong to the ceiling.
4. Match the height of the two exactly. A pair is judged as a pair, and an error of 0.5 in reads as a mistake where the same error on a single piece would not.
5. Check from the doorway before drilling the second one. An arrangement centred on the sofa looks deliberately off-centre from the entrance, and that is correct.

The spacing range matters more than the exact figure. Too close together and the pair reads as one wide object; too far apart and they stop relating to each other and become two separate pieces that happen to be at the same height.

Why does a pair go wrong so often above seating?

Because two objects invite a comparison that one does not.

A single piece hung 2 in off centre reads as a choice. Two pieces 0.5 in apart in height, or spaced unevenly around a sofa, read as an error, because the eye measures them against each other rather than against the room. That raises the accuracy required considerably.

The second reason is the wall behind. A pair leaves a gap of 28 to 42 in between them, and that gap becomes part of the composition. On a plain wall it is a pleasant interval; with a radiator, a socket or a join in the plaster showing through it, the gap becomes the thing you notice.

The third is that most sofas are not centred on their wall. Rooms have doors, chimney breasts and radiators, so a sofa often sits 6 or 12 in off the wall's midpoint. A pair centred on the wall above an off-centre sofa is the single most common version of this arrangement and the one that never quite settles.

Should the pair match exactly?

Above a sofa, yes. Elsewhere, not necessarily.

The reason is that a sofa is itself symmetrical. Seating with 2 arms and an even back sets up an axis, and objects above it either respect that axis or fight it. On a long wall with no furniture there is no axis to respect, which is why two different objects work there and two identical ones read as wallpaper.

One practical consequence of matching: buy both at once. Hand-textured plaster varies between production runs, and 2 discs bought 6 months apart can differ enough in tone to be visible at 10 ft on the same wall. On a pair that will be judged against each other every day, that is not a difference worth discovering after the first one is up.

What if the sofa is too small for a pair?

Use one piece, centred on the sofa, and put the second light elsewhere.

A pair needs enough width for both pieces and a real gap between them. With discs 27.6 in (70 cm) across, a pair spaced a third of the sofa width apart needs a large three-seat sofa before the two stop touching visually.

Below that, 1 piece centred on the sofa is the stronger composition, and it costs about half as much. The room still gets its second light from a lamp at one end of the seating, which also breaks the symmetry pleasantly rather than fighting it.

The general rule worth carrying: the smaller the wall, the fewer the objects. Two pieces on a wall that can only just hold them is the arrangement most likely to look crowded, and one piece with generous margins almost never does. What should the light do above a sofa?

Warm, dimmable and aimed at the wall rather than at the room.

1. Keep the source concealed. Anything at 60 in or above is at eye level for a standing person, and a visible bulb there is looked into by everyone walking past.
2. Wash the wall rather than the seating. A backlit piece throws its glow onto plaster, which returns it softly instead of putting a bright point in the room.
3. Fit dimming, because the position runs from 6pm to 11pm. A fixed-output pair is wrong at one end of that range.
4. Match the colour temperature to every other light in the sightline, ideally at 2700K. Two warm discs beside a cooler lamp produce 2 different whites, and the eye reads that as a fault.
5. Put the control where people sit. A remote is worth more here than at any other position in a house.

What I'd do

Mark the sofa's centre, space the pair a third of the sofa width apart, and hang them 20 in above the back.

Then step into the doorway and look. If the pair is centred on the sofa and the sofa is off-centre on the wall, the arrangement will look asymmetric from there and correct from the seating, which is the right way round — people sit in the room far more than they stand in the door.
