A bud vase is a narrow cylinder. Everything put into it is forced to the same vertical, which is exactly why a single stem looks composed in one.

Add a second and a third and they compete for the same space. The result is a splay, with each stem leaning on the tube's rim rather than standing in water.

Three stems work when the holder has a mouth wide enough to give each its own angle — a jug, a low bowl, a wide-necked bottle.

So the rule is not about taste. It is about whether the vessel can hold the arrangement you are attempting, and a tube can hold exactly one line.

What one branch does that three stems cannot

It draws. A single branch is a line with a direction, and against a plain textured panel it behaves like a brush stroke.

It also lets asymmetry work. One stem leaning slightly off vertical looks intentional; three leaning stems look like they were dropped in.

And it survives being looked at from an angle. A wall piece is seen from the side far more often than head on, and a bouquet arranged for a front view collapses the moment you walk past it.

The exception is when three stems are identical and cut to the same length — three bunny tails, say. That reads as a repeated element rather than as an arrangement, and it works for the same reason a single branch does.

What to actually use

• Dried grasses. Pampas, bunny tail, preserved eucalyptus. Light, no water, and they suit a textured plaster finish better than most fresh flowers.
• A bare branch. Birch, willow, olive. Free from a walk, and the most graphic option.
• One fresh stem. A single ranunculus, tulip or rose changed weekly. The most alive option and the most upkeep.
• A cutting in water. Pothos or monstera roots visible through clear glass, which turns the tube into part of the display.

What to avoid: anything heavy at the top. A weighty flower head on a long stem levers against the tube and can lift it out of its holder.

Where to find a branch worth using: hedge trimmings in late winter, when the shape is visible and nothing is in leaf. Look for one clear curve or one clean fork rather than a busy twig, strip anything that clutters the line, and let it dry indoors for a week before it goes anywhere near the tube. A branch straight from outside sheds bark and occasionally something living.

Cutting it to the right length

1. Hold the stem against the piece before cutting anything.
2. Aim for the visible part above the tube to be roughly one to one and a half times the tube's height. Shorter looks stumpy; much longer looks precarious.
3. Cut at an angle, and cut it long — you can always take more off.
4. Strip any leaves that would sit below the water line, which is what makes water cloud.
5. Stand back to where you normally sit and check the silhouette against the wall, not against the panel.

That last step matters on a lit piece: the stem's shadow becomes part of the composition once the light is on, and it is longer than the stem itself.

Water, and how often it needs you

Fresh stems in a narrow tube need the water changing before it clouds — every few days in a warm room. Cloudy water in clear glass is very visible from across a room.

Lift the tube out to fill it and to empty it. Filling on the wall is how water reaches a hand-textured panel, which absorbs a splash rather than shedding it.

Fill about two thirds. A full tube slops when the stem goes in.

If the piece hangs somewhere you will not tend it — a hallway, a guest room — go dried and skip water altogether. That is not a lesser option; it is the one most people end up preferring. What belongs on the ledge covers the rest.

Matching the stem to the panel

Colour first: a stem should either sit in the same family as the panel or contrast clearly. Near-misses look accidental, the same way near-matched wood tones do.

On a cream or sand panel, dried grasses in a similar tone read as tonal and calm. A dark branch reads as a deliberate line. A bright flower reads as a full stop — which can be right, once.

Scale second: the stem should not out-measure the panel. On a 22 in vertical piece, a branch much over about a foot above the tube starts to compete with it.

If three is what you want, make them agree.

Same species, same length, cut square rather than staggered. Three identical dried grasses in a narrow tube look like a considered repetition.

Three different stems at three heights need a wider vessel. In a tube they will lean into a fan and the fan is the thing everyone notices.

The other route is to keep the tube to one stem and put the arrangement elsewhere — a jug on the console below. Then the wall piece is a line and the table is the bouquet, and neither is fighting the other.

What I would do

One branch, slightly off vertical, dried. It photographs well, it never needs water, it does not block a backlight, and there is nothing to knock off when somebody walks past with a coat over their arm.

Change it seasonally rather than weekly. A bare branch in winter and dried grasses in summer is enough variation for a wall piece.

And try it empty once. On a lit piece with a strong shape, an empty tube and a low light is the version a lot of people settle on — the same logic as running one piece as the only decoration in a room.
