Cloudy glasses out of the dishwasher are two unrelated faults wearing the same face: a mineral film lying on top of the glass, or etching, where the glass surface itself has been eroded away. Film wipes off with vinegar. Etching never comes off, and GE Appliances, Whirlpool and Libbey all publish the same verdict on it, which is that the cloudiness is permanent and the glass is finished.

Why are my glasses cloudy after the dishwasher?

A film is something added to the glass and etching is glass taken away, which is why only one of them ever washes off. Whirlpool's product help puts filming down to hard water minerals such as calcium and magnesium drying on the surface, together with the wrong amount or the wrong type of detergent. Libbey, which has been publishing care sheets for its own glassware for years, describes etching as a permanent eroding or pitting of the surface where the metal ions have been removed and the silica is left exposed. One sits on the glass. The other is the glass.

The second thing worth knowing on day one is that the two causes sit at opposite ends of the water scale. Hard water leaves film. Soft water, whether it came out of the ground that way or out of a softener, is the one that etches. GE Appliances states that etching is often caused by using too much detergent in soft water, and its support answer on milky discoloration tells owners on naturally soft or softened supplies to use less detergent and no rinse aid. The household that never scales a kettle is the household quietly eating its glasses.

GE spells out the mechanism on a second page about etching: the milky film-like surface cannot be removed because metal ions have been removed from the surface of the glass by silica compounds. Nothing you pour into the machine puts those back.

How do I tell film from etching in 2 minutes?

Two checks on a dry glass, in this order, and you will know inside 2 minutes.

  1. Hold it up to a window at an angle. Libbey's tell for etching is colour in the haze: shades of blue, purple, pink and brown coming off the surface as the light skims it. A hard-water film reads flat milky white with no colour in it whatsoever.
  2. Rub one small patch with vinegar. Whirlpool's own instruction is to try to rub the film off gently with a small amount of vinegar, and if it does not come off, it may be etching or a silica film. Work a coin-sized patch for a full minute so you have something to compare the rest of the glass against.
  3. Put a never-washed glass beside it. A tumbler kept for hand washing, or one still in its box, gives your eye the reference it needs. Haze at 20% is almost invisible alone and obvious side by side.

If the vinegar patch comes up clear, every cloudy glass in that cupboard is saveable. If the patch looks identical to the untouched glass around it after a minute of rubbing, stop washing them and start reading the settings section below.

Film vs etching: which one can you actually fix?

Film, and only film. Everything in the right-hand column is a purchase decision rather than a cleaning job.

Read the bottom row twice, because the two fixes pull in opposite directions. Adding detergent to a soft-water machine to beat what you think is dirt is how a set of 6 glasses goes cloudy in a season.

How do you get a hard-water film off glasses?

Acid, contact time, then a dry finish, which is the routine Libbey publishes for filmed glassware.

  1. Soak the glasses in white vinegar to release the minerals. Deep enough to cover the hazed area, and give it long enough that you can see the film loosen rather than watching the clock.
  2. Scrub gently with a nylon net or a plastic scrubber and nothing harder. The restraint is the same one that gets burnt food off a hammered pan without scoring the surface you are trying to save.
  3. Rinse in hot water.
  4. Dry immediately with a lint-free towel, checking that no fibres are left behind. Water allowed to dry on the glass is how the film arrived in the first place.
  5. Hand-dry the next few loads straight out of the machine rather than letting them air dry, and add a rinse aid so the final rinse sheets off instead of beading.

Heavy film sometimes needs a second soak, and if 3 soaks move nothing you tested wrong: it was etching all along. A thin film misread as ruined metal is the same mistake people make when a titanium pan starts sticking after a few weeks.

Can etched glass be polished or saved at all?

No. GE Appliances states flatly that once glasses are etched the cloudiness is permanent and cannot be removed, and adds that hand washing does not correct it. Libbey says there is no practical method to restore the lustre. Whirlpool's page finishes in the same place: etching may mean replacing the glassware.

Two things are still worth doing. Demote the etched glasses to jobs where haze does not matter, such as pens on a desk or propagating cuttings, so nobody keeps rewashing them. Then accept the diagnosis, because the escalation is what costs you the rest: the extra scoop of detergent and the longer, hotter cycle people reach for when glasses look dirty is the exact recipe that produced the damage.

Which settings are etching the rest of your cupboard?

Four, and every one of them is a dial you control.

  • Detergent dose. Libbey's figure for glassware is under one tablespoon, and GE tells owners to use less soap when the supply is soft and more when it is hard. A pod is a fixed dose you cannot cut in half, so a soft-water house is better served by a powder or gel it can actually measure.
  • Incoming water temperature. GE's specification is water entering the machine at 120°F or above and no more than 150°F, while Libbey asks for 140°F to 150°F for glassware. Run the hot tap into a mug for a minute, drop a thermometer in, and you know which side of that window your heater sits on.
  • Cycle length. GE's line is to wash glassware on the shortest cycle that will get them clean. A heavy or sanitise cycle keeps the glass sitting in hot alkaline detergent for an extra 40 or 50 minutes for no benefit a tumbler needs.
  • Rack loading. Under-load rather than pack the racks, Libbey says, so the rinse reaches every face of every glass and nothing knocks together on the way through the wash.

Rinse aid is the one place the sources split, and the split is your water. Libbey wants a rinsing agent for sheeting in the final rinse; GE tells soft-water and softened-water homes to leave it out. Hard water, use it. Soft water, drop the detergent dose instead. Whirlpool adds the history behind that: laws passed in 2010 limited phosphates in household dishwasher detergents, and film complaints climbed afterwards, which is why rinse aid now does work the detergent used to do.

Is your water soft or hard, and how do you find out?

It decides which of the two faults you get, so it is the number to have. The Maryland Geological Survey publishes the standard classification used across US water treatment:

  • Soft: 0 to 60 mg/L, which is 0 to 3.5 grains per gallon
  • Moderately hard: 61 to 120 mg/L, 3.6 to 7.0 grains per gallon
  • Hard: 121 to 180 mg/L, 7.1 to 10.5 grains per gallon
  • Very hard: above 180 mg/L, above 10.5 grains per gallon

One grain per gallon works out at 17.118 mg/L on that page, so a softener salesman quoting grains and a utility report quoting mg/L are describing the same water. Three ways to get your figure: a hardness test strip, the annual water quality report your utility publishes, or the reading the installer took if you already have a softener. That last case is the trap. A softener moves you into the soft column no matter how hard the supply was, and soft is the etching column. The same logic runs through why coconut bowls split on their first machine wash: the water and the heat did what they were set to do, and the item was never the problem.

What I'd do

Sort first, then change the machine, and do it in that order so you are not rewashing glass that cannot be saved.

  1. Vinegar-rub a coin-sized patch on the worst glass. 2 minutes, and it decides everything that follows.
  2. Retire every glass that fails the rub, then count what is left so you know whether you are buying 4 replacements or none.
  3. Soak the survivors in vinegar, scrub with a nylon net, rinse hot, dry with a lint-free towel the same hour.
  4. Measure the water arriving at the machine and get it inside the 120°F to 150°F window.
  5. Cut the dose under a tablespoon if your water is soft, add rinse aid if it is hard, and move glassware onto the shortest cycle that gets it clean.

Then leave it for 10 loads before you judge it. Film that took a year to build does not vanish in one cycle, and any new glasses will tell you honestly whether the settings are right, because they start clear and only go one way.
