Which two limitations should stop some people from buying it?
Two, and the first is not a quibble. It sharpens serrated blades, single-bevel Japanese knives and scissors at exactly the same rate, which is zero. Bread knives, most steak knives, tomato knives and any blade ground on one side only sit outside what those slots can reach.
That stops one group properly: the household whose everyday cutting is done with teeth, plus anyone who owns a single-bevel Japanese knife and assumed one drawer tool would cover the lot. A serrated edge cuts with its points, and a straight abrasive slot cannot get down between them. The check costs nothing and takes about two minutes. Tip the whole drawer out, hold each blade edge-up at eye level, and make two piles, straight and toothed. If the straight pile holds the knives you reach for on a weeknight, this covers your week. If it is the smaller pile, buy something else and do not talk yourself round. The workaround, if you buy anyway, is to leave the bread knife on bread, because a toothed edge stays usable long after a straight one has gone soft.
The second limitation meets you in the first month, and then every time after that. Filings. Metal comes off the blade and it has to go somewhere: some stays down in the slot, some sits on the new edge as a burr. So there is a four-step routine after every session, and there is no version of this where you skip it. Wipe the edge down a folded cloth, tap the filings out over the bin, wipe the body dry, and put it away somewhere that is not the sink. That last step stops a real group: anyone who wanted a drawer tool that goes through the dishwasher with the tongs and the peeler. How many pulls, in what order, and how do you know when to stop?
Coarse only if the edge is dead, then medium, then fine, and a sheet of paper tells you when you are finished.

- Set it on a dry counter and push down once. The rubberised base should not shift. A damp counter is the one surface worth wiping first.
- Skip the coarse repair slot unless the edge is dead or chipped. When you do use it, two or three light pulls, then leave it alone until something chips again.
- Medium slot: three to five pulls, heel to tip, one steady motion each. Light pressure the whole way through.
- Fine slot: the same count, the same motion. Finish here every time, on the 3-stage and the 4-stage both.
- On the 4-stage, the fourth slot is a second finishing pass, run after the fine slot. That is the only difference between the two versions.
- Wipe the edge down a folded cloth to clear the burr.
- Test on copy paper, held by one corner, sliced downward. A clean pass and you are done. A snag and it is three more light pulls in fine, then test again.
- Tap out, wipe dry, drawer.
How is a preset slot different from a whetstone?
A stone hands you the angle. This takes the decision off you completely.
On a stone you hold the bevel yourself, and the number you are trying to hold sits around 20 degrees a side for a Western edge and nearer 15 for a Japanese one, kept steady along the whole blade, both sides, for as many passes as the steel wants. People do get good at it. It takes months, a flat wet workspace, and a stone you have to keep flat as well. This tool publishes no degree figure at all, and that is not an oversight: the angle lives inside the slot, it is fixed, and it is identical on both versions. You do not set it, and you cannot change it.
So the honest comparison is not sharpness, it is control. If you want to thin a Japanese knife behind the edge, or preserve a factory bevel ground shallower than the preset, the slot will pull that geometry toward its own over enough sessions, and nothing in the design prevents that. If you want a chef knife that goes through a shallot at seven in the evening without sliding off it, a few light pulls and a paper test gets you there tonight, with no water and no learning curve.
