Why Your Candle Wick Drowns and Won't Stay Lit

A wick that will not stay lit is almost always one of four things: it was trimmed too short, it has drowned in a deep melt pool, it is the wrong size for the width of the container, or there is a draught you have not noticed. The first three are the maker's doing as often as yours. You can rescue the first two in about five minutes with a paper towel and a pair of scissors.

Why does a wick flicker out after a few minutes?

A flame needs to sit above the pool of melted wax, not in it. The wick draws liquid wax up like a straw and burns the vapour. If the top of the wick sits level with or below the wax surface, the flame cannot process the fuel fast enough, so it flickers, shrinks and dies. That is the mechanism behind almost every complaint here.

The most common cause is over-trimming. People read “trim your wick”, cut it flush, then light a candle whose pool deepens within ten minutes and swallows what is left. Second most common is a draught you have stopped noticing — an air-con vent, a cracked window, someone walking past every few minutes. How do you rescue a wick already buried in wax?

Work while the wax is still liquid. That is the whole trick, and it is why most rescue attempts fail — people wait until the candle has cooled and then try to dig a wick out of a solid block.

Light the candle, or if it will not light at all, warm the surface for a minute with a hairdryer on low. Once there is a shallow liquid pool, fold a paper towel into a corner and touch it to the wax near the wick. Blot repeatedly until the wick stands two or three millimetres clear. Let it set, then light it again.

If the wick has set at an angle, pull it upright gently once the surrounding wax is soft. Do not yank it. Pulling a wick free of the wax entirely is the one mistake that ends a candle for good — the metal tab at the base holds it, and once that lets go there is nothing to reattach.

How short is too short when trimming?

About 5mm is the working answer for a cotton wick. Below 3mm you are inviting exactly the drowning problem you were trying to avoid. Above 8mm you get a tall smoky flame, a black carbon ball on the tip, and soot on the container.

Trim before every light rather than after, and do it when the wax is cold. Trimming a warm candle drops the cut piece into the soft pool, where it sits as a fragment that catches fire later and burns hot in the wrong place. Nail scissors work; a wick trimmer is nice and not necessary.

One thing matters more than trimming: the first burn. If your first light is a short one, the wax sets with a tunnel down the middle, and every burn after that has a wick sitting deeper in a well. Does a wood wick need different treatment?

Yes, and applying cotton-wick habits to a wood wick is why people decide wood wicks are broken. A wood wick wants to be shorter — around 3mm — and wants the charred crust snapped off before each light rather than cut. Pinch it cold and it flakes away.

They also need patience at the moment of lighting. Hold the flame against the side of the wick for fifteen or twenty seconds rather than touching it and walking away. If you light and leave within three seconds it will go out every time, and it is not faulty.

When is the wick simply the wrong size for the container?

Two clues. First, the melt pool never reaches the edge — the wick is not throwing enough heat for the diameter, so wax builds up at the rim and the wick sinks into a well of its own making. Second, the wick droops rather than standing straight, which happens when it is thinner than the container width demands.

Our rule is two rescues and out. Blot, trim, move it away from any draught, give it one proper long burn. If it still will not hold a flame, ask the seller for a replacement or a refund. Reasonable sellers do this without argument, because they know sizing was their job and not yours.
