Yes, but not for the reason most people assume. Solid pine and hollow MDF of the same thickness will both carry a stack of books without bending. The difference in wall to wall floating shelves shows up at the fixing: pine grips a screw and keeps gripping it, while hollow MDF has a thin skin over a void, and a screw in that skin has almost nothing to hold once the shelf starts to lever against it.
So sturdiness here is a question about the back edge, not the board. The Houseland cube set is solid pine at 0.6 in board thickness with keyhole hangers, rated up to 5 kg per piece.

Where wall to wall floating shelves actually fail
Picture the failure people expect: a shelf bowing in the centre under weight. That happens, but it needs a long unsupported span and a lot of load, and it is slow and visible.
The failure that actually occurs is at the wall. A loaded shelf is a lever. Weight sitting 3 in out from the wall tries to rotate the shelf forward, and everything holding it back is concentrated in the top edge of the fixing. The board does not bend; the fixing pulls.
On solid timber the screw thread bites into continuous fibre and the load spreads through it. On hollow MDF the screw passes through maybe 0.2 in of dense skin and then into air or lightweight fill. There is nothing for it to spread into, so the skin around the hole crushes, the shelf tips forward a degree or two, and now the load is even further out. Once that starts it does not stop.

What board thickness does and does not buy you
Thickness resists bending across a span. It does very little for the fixing.
A 0.6 in solid pine board across an 8 to 12 in module is stiff enough that bending is not the constraint at any realistic domestic load. That is why the Houseland cube boxes are that thickness: enough to be rigid, not so much that the piece becomes heavy to mount.

If you take one thing from the table: two of the four failure modes are about what the screw is going into, and none of them are solved by buying a thicker board.
Open boxes behave differently from single planks
A cube or box module is not the same structure as a floating plank, and it is sturdier for a reason that has nothing to do with the timber.
A box has sides. The sides turn a cantilever into something closer to a frame, and they let the fixing points sit further apart vertically. Two keyholes 8 in apart resist rotation far better than two keyholes on the same horizontal line, because the top pair pulls and the bottom pair pushes against the wall.
This is why the Houseland set mixes 10.6 in and 8.3 in boxes with straight ledges rather than being all ledges. The boxes carry the weight; the ledges carry the composition.
Practical consequence: put the heavy things in the boxes and the light things on the ledges. It sounds obvious and it is the opposite of what most people do, because ledges look like the natural home for books.

The wall decides more than the shelf does
You can hang solid pine badly and hollow MDF well, and the wall is where that is decided.
Into a timber stud, almost anything works. The screw has continuous fibre on both sides of the fixing and the shelf will outlast the wall.
Into plasterboard with no stud, the anchor is the whole story. A plastic expansion plug in 0.5 in board is holding by friction against a thin sheet, and a levered load works it loose over months. A toggle or a metal self-drill anchor spreads the load behind the board and behaves completely differently.
Into old plaster over lath, treat every fixing as suspect until it is proved. Plaster crumbles locally and the hole that felt solid on drilling can be soft an inch in.
If a fixing has already let go on you, an anchor spinning in its hole has a specific fix that is not simply a bigger screw.

- Weight in the description. A hollow module of the same external size weighs roughly a third of the solid one. If a listing avoids stating weight entirely, that is information.
- Look at the edge photo. Solid timber shows grain running through the edge. A wrapped hollow board shows a uniform edge with no grain continuity, often with a visible seam.
- Check the load rating against the fixing. A rating of 5 kg per piece with keyhole hangers is a claim about the shelf. A rating with no fixing method named is a claim about nothing.
- Read the mounting instruction. Hollow boards usually ship with a hidden rod bracket, because they cannot rely on a screw in the back panel. Solid pieces use keyholes.

Keyholes: the part that decides whether it stays level
A keyhole hanger is a slot cut into the back, wide at the bottom and narrow at the top. The screw head goes through the wide part and the shelf drops so the narrow part traps it.
Two things go wrong. First, the two screws are not at the same height, and a keyhole mount gives you no adjustment at all — unlike a wire, it hangs where it hangs. Second, the screw head stands too far proud, so the shelf sits away from the wall and rocks.
Set the screw so the head stands about an eighth of an inch off the wall. Push the shelf on, pull down, and check with a level before you load it. If it is off by a degree, back one screw out a quarter turn rather than re-drilling.
Screws standing too far proud is the single most common complaint on keyhole-mounted shelves and it is a two-minute fix.
What I would buy, and what I would put on it
Solid timber, every time, for anything that will carry weight. The price difference is small at this size and it removes the one failure mode that cannot be fixed after the fact.
Then load it honestly. Up to 5 kg per piece is a real number on a proper fixing, and it is also more than most people put on a decorative shelf. A stack of six hardbacks is around 4 kg. A row of paperbacks is under 2 kg. A plant in a ceramic pot with wet soil is heavier than any of them, and it is the thing that catches people out.
Weight close to the wall, not at the front edge. That one habit does more for the life of a shelf than any upgrade in material, because it shortens the lever that is trying to pull the fixing out. Whether the rating is a hard limit depends entirely on what is behind the plasterboard.
