An adjustable wall light for reading in bed succeeds or fails on the shape of its beam, not on how many watts it draws. A shade that throws light sideways lands most of it on the wall and the duvet; a shade that throws it down puts a readable pool roughly the width of an open paperback exactly where the page is. That difference is decided by the form of the shade and by how far the head will actually turn.
The three numbers worth checking before anything else are how far the shade stands off the wall, how far the joint swivels, and what socket it takes. What does an adjustable wall light for reading in bed have to do?
It has to put light on a page held roughly 14 to 18 inches in front of your chest while keeping the bulb out of your own eyeline and out of the other pillow's.
Those three demands pull against each other. Light on the page wants the fixture forward and angled down. Keeping the bulb out of your eyeline wants the shade deep enough to hide the filament from below. Keeping it off the other pillow wants the beam narrow. A fixture that satisfies the first and fails the second is the classic bedside mistake: bright enough, and unpleasant to sit under for an hour.
Reading light is also a contrast problem rather than a brightness one. A page under a small pool of light in an otherwise dark room reads comfortably at a fraction of the output the same page needs at noon, which is why a 12W LED at arm's length is usually more light than the job requires.
How do the three shade shapes change the pool of light?
Each shape trades beam width against reach, and the right one depends on whether you read sitting upright or lying back.
- The dome is the short-throw option at 6.7 in (17 cm) from the wall. It sits close, clears a headboard, and drops a tight pool almost straight down. Best where the bed is against the wall and there is no room to project.
- The cylinder reaches 9.4 in (24 cm) from the wall and is 5.5 in (14 cm) tall. The straight drum collimates the beam, so it throws further forward and lands on a book held out at chest height rather than on the pillow.
- The bell flares. A flared cone spreads the widest pool of the three, which suits reading a broadsheet or a large-format book and is the worst of the three if someone else is trying to sleep.
The projection figure is the one most people skip. A shade standing 9.4 in off the wall behaves like a small task lamp positioned over your shoulder. A shade at 6.7 in behaves like a downlight on the wall behind you. Both are useful; they are not interchangeable.

How far does the head need to swivel to be worth calling adjustable?
About 90 degrees, which is what takes a beam from horizontal to straight down.
- Check the swivel range before the shade shape. A head with 30 degrees of movement is a fixed light with a marketing claim attached.
- Test the friction, not the range. The joint has to hold the angle under its own weight for months, which is a different property from turning smoothly in a showroom.
- Aim it once with the room dark and a real book in your hands. Angles chosen in daylight are almost always too flat.
- Mark the position. A chrome swivel that has been moved twenty times finds its old spot more easily if there is a pencil line under it.
A swing-arm fixture solves a different problem: it moves the light source horizontally as well as tilting it. That is worth having if two people share one light. For a light per side, a 90 degree tilt is enough, and it has one fewer joint to loosen.

A frosted warm-white LED, not a clear one, and no more output than the room needs.
Glare at bedside is caused by seeing the light source directly, not by total output. A clear bulb puts a visible bright point inside the shade; a frosted envelope of the same wattage spreads that point across the whole surface and the eye stops fighting it. Colour temperature does the second half of the work: around 2700K reads warm and settled late in the evening, while 4000K and above tells the body it is still afternoon.
The socket decides your options. An E27 fitting accepts standard US E26 LED bulbs, which means the shelf at any hardware store is available to you and you are not tied to a proprietary lamp. That matters more over ten years than any spec on the box.

Where should it go if two people share the bed?
One fixture per side, each outside its own shoulder line, is the only arrangement that lets one person read while the other sleeps.
A single central light fails at this by definition: any beam wide enough to reach one pillow reaches the other. Two lights each cover 5 to 10 square meters of room individually, which is far more than a reading pool needs, so the aim is containment rather than coverage. Angle both heads outward and down, and the two pools of light never meet in the middle of the bed.
Height is the other half of it, and the mattress is the reference, not the floor. A bed with a deep mattress and a base can sit 25 inches up, so a fixture measured from the floorboards ends up level with the reader's ear instead of above the shoulder. What I'd do
Pick the cylinder if you read sitting up with the book held out, and the dome if you read lying back with the book close to your chest. That single question settles the shade shape faster than any amount of comparison, and it is why Houseland lists the projection of each shade rather than only its diameter.
Then buy the bulb separately and buy it frosted. A 12W warm-white LED behind a frosted envelope, aimed down at about 45 degrees, is a comfortable reading light. The same bulb clear, aimed level, is the fixture you take down again in a month.
