Pendant vs Flush Mount vs Track Lighting for Your Kitchen

Hang a pendant only over something nobody walks under: an island, a peninsula, a table. Put a flush mount where the kitchen traffic runs, which is the middle of a galley and the path from fridge to sink. Choose track lighting when the counters sit around the perimeter and one ceiling outlet has to feed all of them.

That decision is headroom and counter position, not taste. A Houseland metal pendant is one E27 socket in a painted metal shade, 9.8 in (25 cm) or 11.8 in (30 cm) across, and it makes exactly one pool of light. Here are the three gates, the code numbers behind them, and the two rooms where the hanging fixture loses outright.

How Do You Choose Between the Three in Five Minutes?

Answer three questions in this order and the fixture picks itself.

  1. Who walks under it? If nobody does, because the spot is over an island, a peninsula or a table, a hanging fixture can drop 30 in to 36 in below the work surface and stay out of the way. If people walk under it, that same drop is a bruise waiting to happen.
  2. Is the light wanted in one place or five? One pool over one surface is a pendant. Five aimable pools fed from a single ceiling outlet is track, and that is the honest reason track beats a hanging shade in a galley with no island.
  3. Object or brightness? A pendant is a piece of furniture that also gives light. A flush mount is light with nothing to look at. Track is maximum aim and minimum charm. If the room needs a focal point as much as it needs lumens, the same trade sits behind wall art with a light built into it.

Only gate one can disqualify a purchase outright, so run a tape measure over the room before you open a single shopping tab.

Pendant vs Flush Mount vs Track Lighting: Which Wins Where in a Kitchen?

Each format owns a different room, and the deciding number comes off a tape measure.

Format Wins when Loses when Number to check
Pendant. A defined surface sits under it, such as an island, a peninsula or a dining table, with seating or prep at that surface. It hangs over a walking route, or the ceiling is under 8 ft and the floor plan is tight. Bottom of the shade 30 in to 36 in above the work surface.
Flush mount. The spot is a traffic lane, the ceiling is 8 ft or lower, and the room wants even light with nothing hanging into it. A real work surface below needs its own pool of light and this is the only fitting in the room. Lowest point at 84 in or more above the floor.
Track. Counters run around the perimeter, or three or four zones each need their own aim from one supply. The run would sit low, in a damp spot, or pass through a wall. Not less than 5 ft above the finished floor, load within the track rating.

Two rows of that table are concessions, and they are worth reading twice. If every work surface in the room is against a wall, a single hanging fixture in the middle of the ceiling is the wrong purchase and a track run is the right one. A ceiling under 8 ft with a walking route through the middle is the second case: a flush mount or a recessed downlight keeps the whole plane clear, and the Berkeley CASN lighting primer notes that recessed housings suit tall, short and sloped ceilings alike.

Does Your Ceiling Height Rule the Pendant Out?

Measure two things before you shop: floor to ceiling, and floor to the top of the counter. The room's own floor is 7 ft. The residential code requires habitable space and hallways to have a ceiling height of not less than 7 ft, measured from the finish floor to the lowest projection from the ceiling, and Minnesota's adopted R305.1 text says exactly that. Where a ceiling slopes, at least half the required floor area has to reach 7 ft and no counted area may fall below 5 ft.

That is a room rule rather than a fixture rule, but it hands you the headroom benchmark everyone borrows. Run the arithmetic on a standard 8 ft ceiling: 96 in of height, a work surface at 36 in, a 30 in drop below it, and the bottom of the shade lands at 66 in off the floor. Over an island 66 in is comfortable; in a walkway it is head height for most adults. Under a 7 ft 6 in ceiling the sums get tighter again, and the honest move is to stop shopping for something that hangs.

When Does Track Lighting Beat a Pendant?

Track wins the galley, and it wins on geometry. A galley has no middle surface to hang over: the chopping, the hob and the sink sit along two walls, so one central pool leaves you working in your own shadow. A track run carries several heads, each aimed at its own stretch of counter, and a floating canopy takes power from an outlet box you already have. WAC's H-track installation sheet describes that canopy as covering a junction box and bringing power to the track anywhere along its length.

The restrictions are code, not preference, so read them before you commit. Under IRC section E4005.4, lighting track shall not be installed where it is likely to be subject to physical damage, in wet or damp locations, where subject to corrosive vapors, where concealed, where extended through walls or partitions, or less than 5 ft above the finished floor unless it is protected or operates below 30 volts. E4005.3 adds the limit shoppers forget: the connected load must not exceed the rating of the track, and the branch circuit feeding it cannot be rated higher than the track. You cannot keep adding heads to a run forever, because the track's own rating is the ceiling.

WAC's own safety page adds two more that never appear in a showroom: keep the run at least 6 in away from curtains or anything combustible, and never feed one track from more than one branch circuit, because overloading the shared neutral is a fire risk.

When Is a Flush Mount the Better Buy?

Flush mounts win the traffic, and in most kitchens the traffic is most of the floor. The Berkeley CASN lighting primer puts ceiling-mounted fittings at the top of the list for ambient light and calls them especially practical in areas with much activity, naming foyers, hallways, bedrooms and kitchens. Nothing hangs into the room, so the walking route keeps its full height and the fitting can sit over the middle of a galley where a shade on a cord would be a nuisance.

Do the clearance sum the same way. An 8 ft ceiling gives you 96 in; hold the lowest point of anything above a walking route at 84 in or higher and you have about 12 in of depth to spend on the fitting. Most close-to-ceiling fittings live inside that; almost nothing on a cord does. You get even ambient light and give up the focal point, which is why plenty of rooms end up with both formats.

Will One Fixture Actually Light a Whole Kitchen?

No, and the design numbers say so. Kitchen and food-prep areas are lit to 30 to 75 footcandles, or 300 to 750 lux, in the IESNA tabulation Archtoolbox reproduces. A standard 60-watt incandescent bulb makes about 800 lumens, the figure the FTC's bulb guide uses to teach lumen shopping. A 120 sq ft room at the bottom of that range wants something near 3,600 lumens on the work plane, before any is lost to a shade aimed at the floor. One socket does not get there.

So the real answer is layers rather than a winner. The Berkeley primer splits light into ambient, task and accent, lists recessed, track, hanging and under-cabinet fittings as the sources of task light for preparing and cooking food, and puts a number on accent: about three times as much light on the focal point as the general light around it. Under-cabinet strips do the countertop work no ceiling fitting does well, which is the same logic that separates a backlit panel from an LED strip in a bedroom.

Houseland's product page for this fixture publishes the painted metal shade, the E27 socket, two shade diameters, a 1.5 m adjustable cord and an included LED bulb. It does not publish a lumen output, a color temperature in Kelvin or a maximum socket wattage, so no room should be sized from that listing. Read the lumens off the Lighting Facts panel on the bulb box, where the FTC brochure says the brightness figure lives, and read the maximum wattage off the label on the fitting itself before you put a brighter bulb in it.

Can You Fit Any of These Yourself?

All three are permanently wired to a branch circuit, so none is a plug-in job. IRC E4005.1 requires lighting track to be permanently installed and permanently connected to a branch circuit, and a canopy screwed to a ceiling box is the same kind of connection. Swapping like for like on an outlet you already have is the small job; adding one, moving one or running a new circuit is not.

  • In the United States the fixture rules sit in the NEC and, for dwellings, in the IRC electrical chapters. Permits and inspection are set locally, so a new circuit or a new ceiling box means a call to your building department and usually a licensed electrician.
  • In England and Wales Part P makes installing a new circuit notifiable, and any addition or alteration in a special location notifiable too. The IET's Part P guidance defines those as rooms containing a bath or shower and their zones, swimming pools and saunas. A kitchen is not one of them, which surprises people.
  • Replacing a fitting on an existing circuit outside a special location is generally non-notifiable in England, and it still has to comply with BS 7671. Non-notifiable is not the same as unregulated.

If the job needs new wiring, book a qualified electrician; in England that work is either notified to building control or done by a registered competent person. Cord length is the easy part by comparison: the Houseland fixture's 1.5 m cord is adjustable, and any slack you are left with has tidy ways to disappear.

What I'd Do

Island or table under a ceiling of 8 ft or more: hang it, 30 in to 36 in above the surface, and add under-cabinet light so one shade never has to carry the room. No island, counters against the walls, or a ceiling under 8 ft with a route through the middle: buy the flush mount or the track run and spend the difference on better bulbs. If you do have a surface to hang over, our wall lamps collection is where the hanging fittings sit.

Questions people ask about this

How many hanging lights should go over an island?

Visual Comfort's placement guide suggests two over a smaller island and three over a larger one. For two, divide the island length by four and set each fixture that distance in from its end; for three, divide by three and center the middle one.

Can track lighting go in a bathroom or over a shower?

No. IRC E4005.4 bars lighting track from wet or damp locations outright, and WAC's own installation sheet repeats it. In England, any work in the zones around a bath or shower is notifiable under Part P as well, so that is an electrician's job, not a weekend one.

Does the shade size change how much light I get?

Not the output, which comes from the bulb, but it changes where the light lands. A wider shade throws a broader pool and hides the lamp from more sight lines. The two diameters listed here are 9.8 in (25 cm) and 11.8 in (30 cm).

Is a bulb included, and what brightness is it?

Our page includes an LED bulb with the adjustable cord. It does not publish a lumen figure, a Kelvin value or a CRI, so check the Lighting Facts panel on the bulb packaging if brightness or light color matters to you.

What is a floating canopy connector?

It is the part that lets a track run take power from a junction box you already have, anywhere along the track's length rather than only at one end. WAC's H-track instructions describe fitting the mounting plate to the box and routing the wires into the track below it.

Can I mix formats in one kitchen?

That is usually the right answer. A flush mount over the traffic lane, something hanging over the island, and under-cabinet strips on the counters cover ambient, focal and task light. Kitchens are designed to 30 to 75 footcandles, and no single fitting delivers that alone.
