The comparison of wall sconce vs floor lamp for kids room use is settled by two things a spec sheet never mentions: whether there is a cable on the floor, and whether the fixture can be pulled over. A floor lamp has both problems by design. A hardwired wall light has neither, and pays for it by being fixed in one place forever.

The cable is the part that gets underestimated. A child's room rarely has a socket where the reading chair is, so the lamp cable crosses open floor — the same floor a toddler runs across in the dark on the way to a parent's room. A hardwired fixture connected to a standard wall box has no cord at all, which removes both the trip and the pull.

At what age does a floor lamp become reasonable?

Around the point a child stops using furniture to climb, which is usually somewhere between four and six.

Before that, anything with a base and a tall body is a climbing frame. The tipping risk is not really about the lamp falling on its own; it is about a two-year-old using it to stand up. A weighted base helps and does not solve it, because the failure mode is lateral force at the top rather than a knock at the bottom.

After that age the calculation shifts. An eight-year-old wants a reading corner that moves, a desk that faces a different way each term, and a light that follows. A floor lamp does that; a fixture screwed to a wall box does not. If the room is going to be rearranged four times before secondary school, a wall light that ends up in the wrong place is a light nobody uses.

The compromise most households land on is one of each: a fixed wall light near the bed or changing area that never moves, and a plug-in lamp elsewhere once the child is old enough for it.

How do I light a kids room without a ceiling light on full?

Use two low sources at different heights rather than one bright one overhead.

1. Put a wall light at the bed for stories and night waking. A fixture covering 5 to 10 square meters is a supplementary source, which is exactly what this position needs.
2. Add a second light at the desk or play area once there is homework. Directional beats diffuse here.
3. Keep the ceiling fixture for tidying up and getting dressed, and accept that it is the wrong light for the evening.
4. Match the colour temperature across all three at about 2700K. Mixed colour temperatures in a small room read as one of the lights being broken.
5. Put the bedtime light on a switch the child can operate. Independence at bedtime is worth more than any lumen figure.

What about a light the child can knock, reach or pull?

Height and mounting decide this, not the fixture type.

The physical size matters too. A compact fixture, roughly 8.3 in (21 cm) tall with a 7.1 in (18 cm) shade, presents far less leverage to a hand than a large decorative light on an arm. There is simply less to grab.

Which one works in a room two children share?

A wall light per bed, because it is the only arrangement that lets one child read while the other sleeps.

A single floor lamp in a shared room lights both halves of it by definition. Whatever position it takes, its output spills across the room, so the child who wants to sleep at 7pm and the child who wants to read until 8 are in direct conflict every evening. Two wall lights, each aimed at its own pillow and each with its own switch, remove that argument from the household entirely.

Two details make this work in practice. Aim each head outward and down rather than into the room; a fixture covering 5 to 10 square meters is easily enough to reach a book and quite capable of reaching the other bed if it is pointed carelessly. And put both on their own switches rather than on a single circuit, because a shared switch reintroduces the problem the second light was bought to solve.

What I'd do
