Why the number is conservative

Where you put the weight matters as much as how much

  1. Keep heavy objects towards the back of the shelf. The closer to the wall, the less leverage.
  2. Spread the load along the shelf rather than concentrating it in the middle of a span.
  3. Put the heaviest modules low in a group, for the fixings and for how it looks.
  4. Avoid loading one module to its limit while others sit empty; the wall feels the concentration.
  5. Reload gradually rather than filling a new shelf on day one, and check it the next day.

Those five habits are worth more than a higher number on the box.

Ratings are quoted differently by different sellers, and the differences matter.

Evenly distributed or point load? A distributed figure is larger than what the same shelf takes in one spot.

Which wall? Some ratings assume a fixing into solid timber, which most people do not have.

With the supplied fixings? Often the quoted figure depends on hardware most buyers replace anyway.
