Chimney Breast Ideas With No Fireplace and No Mantel

Hang one wide piece and give the wall back a ledge. Chimney breast ideas nearly all assume a fireplace and a mantel underneath; with both gone the breast still juts into the room and still grabs the eye, but nothing sets the height any more, so whatever you hang has to bring its own baseline with it.

How do you rebuild the line the mantel used to set?

Find the old mantel line first, because it is usually still readable in the plaster.

Is your chimney breast solid masonry or a false stud box?

Knock on it before you buy anything, because two completely different walls look identical under paint.

A true breast is masonry built forward to hold a fireplace, carrying a flue, and its interior is commonly filled with brickwork or concrete. A false one is a timber frame or studwork clad in plasterboard and skimmed, put up around a twin-walled flue or purely for looks. The first takes a masonry plug; the second takes nothing at all unless you hit timber.

• Hollow, drummy knock, and a stud detector picking up timber on a repeating pitch: false breast. Framing studs sit commonly at 16 in on center, and sometimes at 12 or 24 in, so mark two before you trust the pattern.
• Dead thud, and red or grey dust off the bit: masonry. Drill with a masonry bit and size the plug to the screw rather than to the hole you already made.
• The bit drops through after an inch or two of resistance: that is the flue void behind a single skin of brick. Move sideways. A plug that ends in open air inside the flue holds nothing at all, whatever the packet says about 30 lb.
• Crumbly brown dust and a screw that keeps turning: old soft mortar or sooted brick. Go into the brick itself, not the joint.

How wide should the piece be on a chimney breast with no fireplace?

Two thirds to three quarters of the breast width, measured across the face.

Olive et Oriel puts art above a fireplace at 60 to 75% of the mantel width, and Montcarta applies the same two-thirds ratio to whatever furniture sits below, with the blunt formula width x 0.66. What does a backlit piece do to a patchy breast?

It shows up every ripple in the plaster, which is either the whole point or the whole problem.

Light thrown along a surface at a shallow angle is how plasterers check their own work, and a breast that has had a surround chopped out of it is rarely flat. Run a hand torch up the face in a dark room before you decide: if the patch shows, skim it or pick a piece that sits quietly. Power is the second thing to settle before you drill. A breast almost never has an outlet on it, so the choice is a plug-in cord you route down and hide, a battery light running on AA cells that are not in the box, or no light at all as a plain panel. Renters should read the fixings question first — what comes off a wall without taking paint matters more than what goes on it.

Leave any vent alone. If a small grille sits low on the breast it is there to let the capped flue breathe, and covering it with a panel or a shelf trades a decorating problem for a damp one.

Measure the breast, then buy to the measurement rather than to the picture in your head.

On a 48 in breast that means a piece 32 to 36 in wide, its centre 57 to 60 in off the floor, with a shallow ledge restored at the old mantel scar and one tall object on it. Knock the face first so you know whether you are drilling brick or plasterboard, and test-drill once at the edge of the marked area where a mistake is invisible. Every piece of this is reversible except the holes, so spend the time on the paper mock-up.
