How Much Space Sits Between Your Counter and Upper Cabinets?

Eighteen inches from the worktop to the underside of the wall cabinets is the default, and 15 in to 20 in covers nearly every kitchen you will walk into. That strip is your entire headroom budget. Every inch a rail or a rack takes out of it is an inch your kettle no longer has.

Knowing the space between the counter and the upper cabinets is only half the sum. The half people skip is measuring down to the lowest thing already hanging there, then taking the tallest appliance with its lid open and seeing what survives. A Houseland wire rack is 5.5 in (14 cm) high on the Small and 5.9 in (15 cm) on the Medium and Large, so on a standard gap it costs you about a third of the column and hands back the rest.

How much space is between the counter and the upper cabinets in a normal kitchen?

The number to plan around is 18 in, measured from the worktop surface to the bottom edge of the wall cabinet. House Digest puts the accepted band at 15 in at the low end and 20 in at the high end, with 18 in as the middle. Houzz reports the same figure drifting upward toward 20 in as ceilings get taller, and adds the warning that matters here: go under 18 in and certain small appliances stop fitting below.

The gap is not a design choice made in isolation. It falls out of the rest of the case sizes, which have barely moved in decades.

Those case sizes are the ones listed on Wikipedia's kitchen cabinet page, which also notes the detail that trips up half the people measuring: the worktop-to-cabinet distance shrinks when under-cabinet lighting is fitted. A light bar hangs below the frame, and your tape has to stop at the bar.

Two spots break the pattern on purpose. Over a sink the cabinet is hung higher, around 30 in off the worktop, so you can lean in without cracking your head, and over a hob the clearance is a fire question rather than a comfort one.

How do I measure the gap I actually have?

Measure to the lowest thing hanging, not to the cabinet box. Five steps, one tape, and the answer is a number you can shop with.

1. Stand the tape on the worktop itself, not on the backsplash trim, and read up to whatever hangs furthest down: the light bar, the valance, or the door bottom.
2. Measure the cabinet depth from wall to door face. The 12 in standard is your sightline; hang something deeper and it reads as a lump on the wall rather than a line under the cabinets.
3. Write down the height of the top edge of every receptacle and switch in that strip. A shelf that lands on an outlet is a shelf you will not mount, and you find that out with a tape rather than with a drill.
4. Measure your tallest appliance with the lid open, the mixer head tilted back and the water tank lifted out. Closed height is a showroom number.
5. Subtract the height of the shelf, plus an inch of finger room, from the gap. If what is left is under your tallest open appliance, that appliance moves or the shelf does.

One more reading is worth taking if the wall is tiled. Note where the grout lines fall, because a fixing that lands on a line is far more likely to chip the edge of a tile than one drilled into the middle of it.

What still fits underneath once something is hung there?

Under an 18 in gap a kettle at 9.8 in leaves roughly eight inches of air, and a one-piece rack takes about a third of that. Manufacturer spec sheets are the fastest way to check yours before you drill.

Depth is the trap on that last row. A machine deeper than the cabinet line pokes out into the room, so anything you hang above it has to be shallower still or you are reaching over the machine to get at the shelf. The same logic decides shelf depth generally, which is why a 5 in deep shelf and a 3.5 in one behave so differently on the same wall.

Jars are the easy tenant. Vertical Spice treats 5 in tall by 2 in across as the standard jar, so a single row of them plus a hand to lift them out needs well under half the strip. That is the whole reason this bit of wall gets used for seasoning rather than for crockery: the thing being stored is short.

Open shelf vs wall rack in the same strip: which costs less clearance?

A one-tier rack at 5.9 in high and 4.1 in deep takes less of the gap than a board you can stack on, because it can only hold one row. That limit is the feature, not the compromise.

Both shapes sit inside the 12 in cabinet line, so neither breaks the sightline. The difference shows up in month three. A shelf with open air above it collects a bottle, then a jug, then a jar of utensils, and the clearance you carefully worked out has quietly gone. A fixed rack cannot do that. Depth also decides what a shelf can honestly carry: a shallow board holds jars and small things upright, and it will not take the paperbacks or plates you might expect, which is the same argument as whether 3.5 in is enough shelf for books. If you rent, the other cost is the wall itself, and there are sensible ways to keep a mounted shelf from scuffing the paint behind it.

Where in that strip should the everyday things sit?

Put the things you touch daily in the bottom half of the gap, between the worktop and roughly eye level. The Access Board's ADA guidance sets 48 in as the maximum unobstructed reach and 15 in as the minimum, and a wall cabinet whose bottom edge sits at 54 in starts above that ceiling. Everything on the first cabinet shelf is already a stretch for a short adult and out of range for anyone seated.

The gap itself is the part of the wall that stays in range, which is why it is worth more than the cabinet shelf above it. Salt, pepper, the oil you cook with every night and the four or five jars you actually reach for belong at that height. Backstock does not.

Match the width to the run of wall rather than to the collection. Houseland lists the rack in 11.4 in (29 cm), 13.8 in (35 cm) and 17.5 in (44.5 cm), described as around six, eight and ten standard jars. What I'd do

Measure down to the light bar first, then check the outlets, then buy. In a standard 18 in gap, a one-row rack under 6 in high leaves the toaster and the kettle their working room and still puts the seasoning within arm's reach.

If your gap measures 15 in, skip the shelf over the main prep run entirely and hang it on the end wall or beside the cooker instead. Nothing you gain in storage is worth losing the one clear stretch of worktop where the chopping happens. And if the wall is tiled with a run of outlets across it, an adhesive fixing on a spare panel of tile beats drilling a hole you cannot unmake.
