Can I Put a Wall Sconce Where There Is No Junction Box?

You can, but not onto that bare patch of plasterboard as it stands. A hardwired wall sconce has to land on a box, the box has to be fastened to something solid, and there is no version of the job that works with no junction box behind the fixture. The real question is which of three routes brings a box to that spot — or whether you drop hardwiring altogether and run a cord.

What decides it is the wall, not the light. A timber stud wall with a socket on the same run can usually be fed by fishing a cable up the void; a solid wall with insulated board over it cannot, and the honest answer there is surface raceway or a plug-in fitting. What does a wall sconce actually need behind it?

It needs an outlet box fastened to structure, with the splice sealed inside that same box. The backplate screws to the box rather than to the plasterboard, and the joint between the house cable and the fixture leads sits in a container somebody can open again.

NEC 314.27(A)(1) governs the support half. A box at a luminaire outlet on a vertical surface must be “identified and marked on the interior of the box to indicate the maximum weight of the luminaire” whenever that weight is anything other than 50 lb (23 kg).

The exception is where people talk themselves into trouble. A vertically mounted luminaire weighing no more than 6 lb (3 kg) may be supported on other boxes, or on plaster rings secured to other boxes, provided it is fixed with no fewer than two No. 6 or larger screws. That is a rule about which box is acceptable, not about whether a box is there.

The splice half needs no code quotation. Connectors pushed into a stud void and skimmed over are the fault that surfaces years later, while somebody else pays to open the wall.

Can I hang a wall sconce where there is no junction box?

Not onto that patch as it stands — one of three things has to change first. Which one fits is settled by the wall and by who owns it, long before taste gets a vote.

• Cut a box into the wall and feed it from a circuit that already exists. This is the tidy answer and the slow one, and in most places it is licensed work, because adding an outlet to a branch circuit is not the same thing as swapping a fixture that is already wired.
• Bring the supply along the surface in metal or plastic raceway from an outlet already on that wall. Nothing gets fished, nothing gets replastered, and you accept one slim line on the wall that paint hides better than people expect.
• Give up the hardwiring and buy a fitting built with a cord. The wall stays shut, the cable shows, and the light leaves with you at the end of a lease.

Route one is the only one that ends with a light indistinguishable from one the builder fitted, and the only one with a sequence you cannot reorder: box position, height, switch, plaster, paint, fixture. That order is walked through in the step-by-step for a hardwired sconce in a child's room.

How do you get a cable to a wall that has none?

You fish it through the void, and the first ten minutes of looking decide whether that is even possible. Inspect before you cut, in this order.

1. Put a camera in first. An endoscope through a 0.4 in (10 mm) hole shows the studs, the noggins and any insulation: three unknowns answered for one filled hole.
2. Check which way the timbers run. DIY Doctor puts a single requirement above all the others: the studwork or the joists must run the same way as the cable run. A stud across your route is not a detour, it is a hole drilled through structural timber.
3. Count the noggins, the short timbers tying the studs together. A flexible drill extension can get through one blind, but DIY Doctor rates the technique poorly and prefers cutting a section out and notching the noggin instead.
4. Stop early if the void is packed with solid insulation. Fishing tape will not go through a rigid board, and DIY Doctor calls that a no-go rather than a difficulty.
5. Get a second pair of hands. The rods are fibreglass, roughly 0.3 in (8 mm) across on a reel, and the pull works with one person feeding while the other draws, slowly.

Every step on that list ends in a hole to fill, sand and paint — the line missing from most quotes, and the reason a cheap job turns into a weekend.

Old-work box vs fixture-rated box: which one holds a sconce?

The one whose interior marking matches the fixture — and that marking works the opposite way round from how most people read it. Under 314.27(A)(1) a box at a wall luminaire outlet is taken to carry 50 lb (23 kg) unless the inside of the box is marked with a smaller figure. The number you are hunting for is the low one, and the only moment you can read it is before the box disappears into the wall.

For a wall light the weight column is usually a formality: a painted iron shade on a wood base sits nowhere near the code figure. It stops being one the moment somebody proposes hanging the fitting off a plaster ring, or a shallow box sold for a switch.

Is a plug-in wall sconce a legitimate answer?

It is a fair answer for a wall nobody is ever going to open, as long as the cord stays outside the wall. The tempting move is to drill behind the fitting, drop the cable down the cavity and bring the plug out above the skirting. NEC 400.8(2) names that exact move: flexible cords shall not be “run through holes in walls, structural ceilings, suspended ceilings, dropped ceilings, or floors”.

A compliant way to make a cord vanish into a wall exists, and it is a product rather than a technique. The 2014 code added a permitted use for a cord run between an existing receptacle outlet and an inlet powering one additional outlet, provided “the inlet, receptacle outlet, and Chapter 3 wiring method, including the flexible cord and fittings, shall be a listed assembly specific for this application”. That is the in-wall power kit sold for wall-hung televisions.

Buy a fitting designed with a cord rather than splicing a cord kit onto a hardwired one. NEC 410.6 is one line long — all luminaires, lampholders and retrofit kits shall be listed — and a cord joined on at the kitchen table is a field modification of a listed product. Where the cable runs matters more than which fitting you picked, and the routes are compared in hiding the power cable on a lit wall piece, while the trade against a cell-powered fitting is worked through in battery against plug-in for a softer light.

What should you ask an electrician for?

Ask for six specifics, and mark the height on the wall before anybody arrives. A quote given against a pencil cross is a different number from a quote given against a wave of the hand.

• The height, in pencil, on the wall. Modern Place's height guide puts wall lights 60 to 72 in from the floor, and about 60 in for a reading position beside a bed.
• Which circuit the supply comes off. A lighting circuit already above the ceiling costs less to reach than a spur from a socket below, and moves the price further than the box does.
• Where the switch lands. On the fitting body, by the door, or both, decided now, because the second cable goes in while the wall is open.
• The box, named. One identified for a luminaire outlet, fastened to a stud or a bar hanger rather than gripping plasterboard.
• What the camera showed. Insulation and noggins both change the labour, and neither is a welcome surprise halfway through.
• Who fills and repaints. Making good is rarely inside an electrical quote, and it is the part you look at every day afterwards.

Projection decides where the pencil cross goes. Houseland publishes it on the listing instead of an overall size alone: the dome shade stands 6.7 in (17 cm) off the wall and the cylinder reaches 9.4 in (24 cm) on its wood arm, which is the gap between a light that clears a headboard and one you catch with an elbow.

What I'd do

Check the wall before you shop. Find the studs, then hunt for a blanked-off cover plate: a wall that once had a light often still has its box, and a blank plate near the right height turns this from a wiring job into a swap.

If it is a stud wall with a socket or a switch on the same run, get one quote for cutting a box in at the height you marked, and ask for the fishing route in writing. If it is masonry, insulated, rented, or your pencil cross landed square on a stud, buy a corded fitting and spend the saved money on running the cable neatly.

Where a box is going in anyway, choose the light for what it has to do afterwards.
