What Goes Beside the Bed When There's No Room for a Nightstand?

Measure the gap before you buy anything. If the space between the mattress edge and the wall is under about 18 in, a floor-standing nightstand either will not go in or will squeeze the only walkway to a shin-barking width, so the nightstand ideas worth trying in a room this narrow put the surface on the wall at mattress height instead of on the floor.

Work out what the surface has to carry first: a phone, a glass, whatever you are reading, and a pair of glasses. That is a light load on a small footprint. How much space does a bed actually need beside it?

Those figures come from designer Izabela Tokarski in Homes & Gardens, which puts a king at 30 to 36 in a side and asks for 24 to 30 in at the foot of a twin or full. Hunker sets the same idea in plainer terms: a bed wants a 2 ft walkway around its perimeter simply to be made and climbed into, plus 3 ft between the doorway and the nearest piece of furniture.

Now measure your own room at pillow height, mattress edge to wall, because that is where a bedside table has to live. Subtract the depth of the one you were considering. The wall-hung nightstands rounded up by 10 Stunning Homes run 11.8 to 15 in front to back, so dropping one of those into a 20 in gap leaves 5 to 8 in of walkway, which is narrower than your own shoulders. That is the arithmetic behind the whole problem.

Which nightstand ideas work when the room leaves no floor gap?

Move the surface to the wall, to the bed frame, or onto wheels — those are the three places left once the floor is spoken for. Each buys back a different amount of room and asks for a different fixing.

• A ledge on the wall at mattress height. No floor footprint at all, and the walkway keeps every inch it had. Two screws, and the depth is whatever you choose.
• A caddy hung over the bed rail. Nothing to drill, which suits a lease that forbids holes. It sags under a hardback and it hangs below the mattress, so you reach down rather than across.
• A wall-mounted cabinet with a door. Hides the clutter, but a cabinet deep enough for a box of tissues stands 10 to 12 in off the wall and re-creates the problem you were solving.
• A cart on castors parked at the foot. Rolls to the bedside at night and out of the walkway by day. It works only if there is somewhere for it to go.
• A bookcase turned side-on as a headboard. Homebody Forever advises making it a touch wider than the bed so the sides do not look clipped.
• A stool or a spare dining chair. The cheapest way to test whether you need 8 in of surface or 16 in, as long as the seat lands near your mattress top.

Level with the top of your mattress, or up to 5 in above it, and you have to measure your own bed rather than copy a number. 1. Lie down the way you sleep and put your hand where a glass of water should be. Have someone pencil that spot on the wall.
2. Measure from the floor to the pencil mark and to the mattress top, and note the difference. That difference, not a rule of thumb, is your mounting height.
3. Run a strip of painter's tape along the line and leave it up for a night before drilling anything.
4. Check the reach across as well as up. Homes & Gardens wants 2 to 6 in between the bed and the surface, close enough for an arm at full stretch to land on it.

Stacking a second ledge above the first changes the sums, and the spacing between a long ledge and a short one is worked out there. Wall ledge vs floating nightstand: which suits a narrow room?

The ledge wins on floor space and loses on storage, and that is the entire trade. Read the table in the terms that decide it when the gap is under 18 in.

One caveat on the middle column: a drawer front needs clearance to open, so a unit 12 in deep effectively occupies 24 in of air at the moment you want your earplugs. A ledge has no such moment.

Where does the lamp go when the ledge is only 3.5 in deep?

On the wall, because a board 3.5 in deep will not hold a table lamp base and pretending otherwise is how a lamp ends up on the floor. Stand your lamp on a tape measure before deciding: if the base is wider than the shelf is deep, it overhangs, and every tug on the cord walks it forward.

A sconce fixes that and gives the ledge back its whole surface. How do you fix a bedside ledge to the wall in a rental?

Fix into framing where you can, and into metal toggles where you cannot — the plastic plugs in the box are the weak link in most of the failures you read about.

1. Find the studs. Load-bearing walls are framed 16 in on centre under IRC R602.3 per Jobsite Calcs, and non-load-bearing interior walls are sometimes 24 in on centre, so a ledge under 20 in long may catch one stud and no more.
2. Mark both fixing points off a single level line. A ledge that slopes by a degree will send a phone travelling overnight.
3. Where a stud misses, drill for metal toggles and spread the two fixings as far apart as the hangers allow.
4. Load it the way you will actually use it, then lean on the front edge with the heel of your hand. Anything that is going to move will move now, not at 3am.
5. Photograph the wall with the tape line still on it. Patching two holes on move-out day is a ten-minute job when you know where they are.

What I'd do

Keep the ledge to the four things you touch after dark. A phone, a book, water, glasses. Everything else that used to sit on a nightstand — the charger brick, the tissues, the paperback pile — belongs in a drawer or under the bed, and a room this narrow reads better with 3.5 in of clutter on the wall than with 15 in of it on the floor.
