How High to Hang Shelves Above a Bed, and What to Put on Them

Clear of a head sitting up, and holding nothing you would mind falling. How high to hang shelves above bed level has an easy geometric answer and a harder judgement behind it: anything on that wall is above a sleeping person for years.

A hand's width and a half above the headboard is the usual starting point, adjusted upward until someone sitting up in bed has clear space.

The Houseland modules are 3.5 in deep and rated to 5 kg (11 lb) each, which is a light shelf — and above a bed, light is the specification that matters.

How high to hang shelves above bed level

  1. Sit up in the bed as you normally would and have someone mark where the top of your head reaches.
  2. Add a clear margin above that — enough that reaching for a glass of water never brings a shoulder into contact.
  3. Check the headboard height as well; the shelf should clear it by a hand's width and a half at minimum.
  4. Keep the lowest module reachable from standing, or it will never be dusted or restyled.
  5. Check from the doorway too, since a shelf above a bed is the first thing seen entering the room.

Most bedrooms end up with the lowest module somewhere well above the pillows, which also keeps it out of the way of pillows being thrown back into place.

What should never go above a bed

Anything heavy. Books, speakers, stone or thick ceramics. Weight above a sleeping person is not worth any styling benefit.

Glass and anything that shatters. A vase, a framed picture with glazing, a glass candle holder.

Anything with water in it. A plant pot, a bud vase, a glass of anything.

Lit candles, obviously, and unlit ones only if they cannot roll.

Anything that has to be reached for daily, since each grab is a knock.

What is left is genuinely fine: a dried stem, a light book you are not reading, a fabric-covered object, a small unbreakable frame.

Fixings above a bed

This is the one wall where the fixing question is not really about weight.

Fix into studs wherever the layout allows, and use a batten across two studs if the modules do not line up with them. It costs an hour and removes the question permanently.

Where anchors are the only option, use metal expanding anchors or toggles rather than the plastic plugs in the box, and space the two fixings as wide as the hangers allow.

Check the fixings once a year. Nothing else in a bedroom gets that attention, and this is the one wall where it is warranted — when anchors are enough sets out the threshold.

Headboards, and the wall behind them

A tall upholstered headboard usually solves the problem by pushing everything higher, which is good for safety and awkward for reach.

Where there is no headboard, the shelf often becomes the visual one, and it should be wide enough to read that way — roughly two thirds of the bed's width, treated as a group rather than as separate pieces.

Keep the group centred on the bed rather than on the wall. The bed is the dominant object, and a group centred on the wall but off-centre over the bed looks wrong from the doorway.

And leave the wall directly behind the pillows clear. That is where heads rest and where a hard object is least welcome.

Beds move, too, which is the argument for measuring from the bed rather than from the floor. A divan swapped for a frame with a taller mattress raises the whole geometry by several inches, and a shelf set for the old bed can end up much closer to a sitting-up head than it was on the day it went up. If a new bed is likely, hang higher than the minimum.

Depth, and why shallow matters here

Depth Above a bed
Up to 4 in Fine — clears a sitting-up head easily
4 to 6 in Workable if hung high
Over 6 in Better on another wall

A deep shelf above a bed reduces the space someone can sit up into, and it makes a bedroom feel lower than it is.

Shallow modules keep the wall usable, and they also carry less leverage on their fixings — which matters more here than anywhere else in the house.

The Houseland modules are 3.5 in deep, which sits in the comfortable band and is one of the reasons a shallow set suits a bed wall better than a deeper storage shelf. It also keeps the whole group visually light, which matters in a room where the wall behind the bed is the first thing seen and the last thing looked at.

Children's rooms and bunk beds

Different rules. Above a child's bed, treat everything as if it will be pulled on, because at some point it will be.

Fix into studs, keep the shelf out of reach from the mattress, and put nothing on it that a child would want badly enough to climb for.

Bunk beds change the geometry entirely: the upper bunk brings a sleeping head much closer to any wall shelf, and a module that is safely high above a standard bed can be at face height there.

In a child's room the honest answer is often to put the shelves on a different wall and leave the bed wall bare.

Styling a bed wall so it stays calm

Bedrooms benefit from restraint more than any other room, and a shelf above a bed is the least useful place in the house for clutter.

Two or three modules, half of them empty, and objects chosen for softness rather than for interest.

Dried stems, a fabric-covered box, a small unglazed ceramic, a light frame with an acrylic front rather than glass.

Nothing that needs watering, dusting weekly, or reaching for — the same principle as in keeping a bedroom wall to one piece.

Sound is worth a thought too. Anything hard on a wall behind a bed reflects noise from the room back towards the sleeper, which is a small effect and a real one in a flat with thin walls. Fabric-covered objects and dried material do the opposite, which is another reason they suit this particular wall.

What I would do

Two shallow modules, hung clear of a sitting-up head, fixed into studs, holding dried stems and one soft object between them.

Nothing breakable, nothing heavy, nothing with water in it, and nothing I would reach for in the dark.

And if the wall has no studs where the layout wants them, I would either fit a batten or move the shelves to another wall. Above a bed is the one place where “the anchors will probably be fine” is not a good enough answer.

Questions people ask about this

How high should shelves go above a bed?

Clear of a head sitting up, which is usually well above the headboard. Sit up in bed and mark where your head reaches, then add a margin so reaching for a glass never brings a shoulder into contact.

What should never go on a shelf above a bed?

Anything heavy, anything glass, anything holding water, candles, and anything reached for daily. What is left — dried stems, a light book, a soft object, an unbreakable frame — is genuinely fine.

Do shelves above a bed need to be fixed into studs?

Wherever the layout allows, yes, or a batten across two studs. This is the one wall where the fixing question is about consequence rather than weight, and it is worth an extra hour.

Should the shelves be centred on the bed or the wall?

On the bed. It is the dominant object in the room, so a group centred on the wall but off-centre over the bed looks wrong from the doorway, however carefully it is measured.

How deep can a shelf above a bed be?

Up to about 4 in is comfortable. Deeper reduces the space to sit up into and makes the room feel lower, and it puts more leverage on the fixings than a shallow module does.

Is it different above a child's bed?

Yes. Assume everything will be pulled on, fix into studs, keep the shelf out of reach from the mattress, and put nothing on it worth climbing for. Above a bunk, a shelf can be at face height for the upper sleeper.

How should a bed wall be styled?

With restraint: two or three modules, half of them empty, and objects chosen for softness — dried stems, a fabric-covered box, an unglazed ceramic, a frame with an acrylic front rather than glass.

Should I measure shelf height from the floor or from the bed?

From the bed. Swapping a divan for a frame with a taller mattress lifts the whole geometry by several inches, and a shelf set for the old bed then sits much closer to a sitting-up head than it did on the day it went up. Where a new bed is likely, hang higher than the minimum.

How wide should a shelf group be over a bed with no headboard?

Roughly two thirds of the bed's width, usually 2 or 3 of the 3.5 in deep modules read as one group rather than as separate pieces, because without a headboard the shelves become the visual anchor. Centre the group on the bed instead of on the wall, and judge it from the doorway, which is where the room is read from.

How often should I check the fixings on a shelf above a bed?

Once a year. Nothing else in a bedroom earns that attention, but this is the one wall with a sleeping person underneath it. Where studs or a batten are not an option, use metal expanding anchors or toggles instead of the plastic plugs in the box, spaced as wide as the hangers on a 5 kg (11 lb) module allow.
