How wide is the bench scraper?

The blade is 6.3 in (16 cm) wide and 4.72 in (12 cm) tall, which is the size most home bakers reach for. That is wide enough to cut across a shaped loaf in one press and still fit in a drawer without a fight.

Are the ruler markings in inches or centimetres?

Inches only. The etched scale runs 0 to 5 in along the cutting edge in 1/8 in steps, and there is no centimetre scale on the blade. The conversion chart on the blade face does carry ml, so millilitres are covered even though the ruler is not.

Will the measurement markings wear off?

They are etched into the steel rather than printed on the surface, so washing and scraping do not lift them the way ink would. The etch reads as a recess in the brushed finish rather than as a layer sitting on top of it.

Can I put it in the dishwasher?

We do not claim it is dishwasher safe, because the supplier documents no rating for it. Hand wash it in warm soapy water and dry it straight away. On tools built this way the handle seal is the part that suffers first in a dishwasher.

Is it sharp enough to cut dough?

It has a straight square scraper edge, not a ground knife edge. It presses cleanly through bread, pizza and pastry dough, brownies and butter. It is not meant for hard vegetables or a baked crust, and it will not do the job of a knife.

Is the blade stiff or flexible?

The blade is 0.03 in (0.65 mm) stainless steel, which is a scraper gauge rather than a cleaver gauge. It holds its shape against dough but has a small amount of give, and that give is what lets the rounded corners follow the inside of a bowl.

Will it scratch my wooden or stone counter?

Used flat against the surface at a scraping angle it is fine on wood, stone and laminate. Dragging a steel edge hard across a soft or coated finish can leave a mark, so keep the blade low rather than digging a corner in.

Will it rust if it gets left wet?

It is stainless steel, so it is far more forgiving than a carbon steel blade, but no stainless is immune to water spotting. Dry it after washing and it will stay clean. Do not leave it sitting in a wet sink overnight.

What does the chart on the blade actually do?

It converts a cup measure into fl oz, tbsp and ml without a phone or a printed chart. It reads 1 cup = 8 fl oz = 16 tbsp = 237 ml, then the same row for 1/2, 1/3 and 1/4 cup. It is there for the moment your hands are covered in dough.

Does it come as a set or as one scraper?

One only. You choose black, yellow or blue at checkout and that single colour is what ships. There is one scraper in the box, not a set of three. The blade and the etched markings are identical on all three colours.

Can I use it for chopped vegetables and not just baking?

Yes. The wide flat blade is the fastest way to move a pile of diced onion, garlic or herbs from the board into a pan, and it saves scraping with a knife edge, which is what dulls a knife. Many buyers use it for prep more than for bread.
