The white crust is escaped electrolyte, and if it has stayed on the springs the fixture is almost certainly saveable. Battery operated sconces and backlit panels run on alkaline cells built around a potassium hydroxide electrolyte, listed at 4-8% of the cell by weight on Energizer’s own safety data sheet. A seal gives up, a little of it creeps onto the metal and dries there. Clean it off, dry the compartment, fit a full new set, and the light usually comes back.
The better question is why that seal gave up on the porch and not in the hallway, because the answer decides what you buy next. Houseland does not sell a sconce that runs on cells at all — every wall sconce here is hardwired to a standard wall box — so the cells in this story are sitting in a backlit wall panel like the textured LED wall stem vase, whose spec line reads “Battery LED or Plug-in LED, chosen at checkout”. Everything below applies to either.

What Is the White Crust on the Battery Contacts?
It is potassium hydroxide that escaped a cell and dried on the metal. Energizer’s alkaline handbook describes the cylindrical cell as a zinc anode, a manganese dioxide cathode and a potassium hydroxide electrolyte, and its safety data sheet puts that electrolyte at 4-8% of the battery by weight, with 2-20 ml available to escape depending on cell size. Nothing burned and nothing shorted out here — a seal simply stopped holding.
Pressure is what leans on that seal. The handbook states that “Hydrogen gas is a byproduct of the chemical reaction in all alkaline batteries”, and that under normal usage “this gas production is very low”. Very low is not none: across 14 months in a compartment nobody opens, it is plenty.
The seal is also the part that moves. Alkaline cells are rated to run between roughly 0°F and 131°F (-18°C to 55°C), and the handbook warns that cycling between extremes “can cause expansion and contraction of the battery components” until it produces “a failure of the battery seal integrity thereby increasing the potential for leakage”. A porch wall does that every day of the year.
Is the Fixture Scrap, or Only Dirty?
Only dirty, provided the crust has stayed on the springs and the contact plates. Corrosion that has crawled up a wire, eaten a spring until it no longer presses, or reached a driver board is a different verdict — and on a lit panel that board sits behind the compartment where you cannot see it. Clean the contacts first and judge the fixture second, because 20 minutes of work settles it either way.
Handle it as the chemical it is. Energizer’s data sheet asks for hand protection, says to prevent skin contact while collecting released material, and says to flush exposed skin with lukewarm running water for a minimum of 15 minutes after a rupture. Duracell’s own cleanup guidance supplies the recipe.
- Take the fixture down if it lifts off its bracket, and work over newspaper.
- Household gloves, glasses, a window open. This is a 4-8% caustic, not dust.
- Lift out every cell and bag them, including the one still reading full.
- Brush the loose crust off dry with an old toothbrush, angled away from your face.
- Neutralise the rest. Duracell specifies one tablespoon of boric acid in one gallon of water, or diluted vinegar or lemon juice mixed 50/50 with water, on a cotton swab, never poured in.
- Bring the springs back to bare metal. The Energizer handbook says to keep contact surfaces clean “by gently rubbing with a clean pencil eraser or cloth”.
- Let it dry completely — Duracell is explicit that the device must be dry before a new cell goes near it.
- Fit a whole new set and test it on the table before it goes back up.
If it lights, you are done. If it does not, the fault is past the contacts and the panel is a warranty conversation rather than a cleaning job.

What Should You Check on Battery Operated Sconces Before You Buy?
Six things, and brightness is not one of them. The listing photo says nothing about the two faults that end a cordless fixture: cells you cannot reach, and a compartment that cooks.
| What to check | Why it decides the outcome | A straight answer reads like |
|---|---|---|
| Can you open the compartment with the fixture on the wall? | You will do it two or three times a year for as long as you own it | “Cover slides off the front”, or “lifts off its bracket” |
| Cell size and how many | Sets the running cost and what a spare set costs | “3 x AA”, not “batteries required” |
| Cells included or not | Decides whether it lights the evening it arrives | “AA, not included” |
| Is the compartment sealed? | Energizer tells device designers hydrogen from alkaline cells “must be either absorbed or allowed to escape to avoid a potential safety issue” | A cover described as vented, or one plainly not airtight |
| Run time, and at which setting | An hours figure is measured at one brightness, and sellers quote the kindest | Two numbers: hours on low and hours on high |
| Where it is going to hang | Storage above 122°F (50°C) is outside the cell maker’s recommended range, and a sunlit conservatory wall passes it | An indoor spot you have actually measured |
The first row is the one people skip and then regret. A fixture on a keyhole hanger, which is how the Houseland stem vase panel mounts, lifts off in one movement, so the compartment is reachable at the kitchen table. A fixture screwed flat through its backplate is a dismantling job every time a cell dies, which is why nobody opens it and why the crust gets a year to grow.
Run time deserves the same suspicion. Ask which brightness the figure came from, and whether an auto shut-off timer is counted in it — a light that quits after four hours flatters its own numbers. The trade between a battery panel and a plug-in one turns on this row more than on the light.
Does Houseland Make a Sconce That Runs on Cells?
No, and that is worth saying plainly. Every wall sconce in the Houseland range is hardwired to a standard wall box; there is no plug-in version and no battery version of one. Search demand for a cordless sconce points at a shape of product we do not build.
Three backlit wall panels do publish a power choice, and that is where the AA cells in this article actually live. The plaster ring panel lists “Plug-in LED with mains adapter, or Battery LED on AA batteries”. The large fluted sandstone panel lists “battery light (AA, not included)”. The textured LED wall stem vase on this page lists only “Battery LED or Plug-in LED, chosen at checkout” — no cell size, no cell count, no run time, no lumen figure, no colour temperature.
Those numbers are not published, so nobody can honestly tell you how long one set of cells lasts in it — us included. Time your first set and pencil the date inside the cover; the second set is then a known quantity. If a socket sits within reach, the plug-in option deletes the failure mode, and a cord that is too long has tidier answers than the one most people picture. All three panels sit in the wall art collection.

View the capsule wall vase panel — plug-in or battery options & current priceWhy Did the Porch Panel Leak and the Hallway One Didn’t?
The porch cycles and the hallway does not. That is the whole difference, and it is the one variable you control by choosing where the fixture goes.
Two numbers frame it. The recommended storage range for alkaline cells is -40°F to 122°F (-40°C to 50°C), and a cylindrical cell loses about 3% of its capacity a year at 68°F (20°C). The care list adds a warning people file under glove boxes: “Don’t put batteries or battery-powered devices in hot places – elevated temperatures increase the self-discharge of batteries.” A south-facing porch, a conservatory and the wall above a radiator all qualify.
A hallway pack loses charge slowly and keeps its seal; a porch pack does both jobs badly and leaks at the end of it. The daily swing damages the seal, the summer average drains the cell, and a porch delivers both.
Measure it rather than guessing. A min/max thermometer left in the exact spot for two weeks in July and two weeks in January costs a fraction of the fixture. If either reading falls outside the storage range above, treat that fixture as one you empty at the end of its season.

How Do You Keep It From Happening Again?
Five habits, four lifted straight from the cell maker’s own care list.
- Empty anything you are about to stop using. The handbook: “Remove batteries from devices that will be stored for extended periods.” Seasonal lighting is this case exactly.
- Open the compartment on a schedule. The handbook asks you to “inspect devices battery compartment every few months to be sure batteries are not leaking”. Hang it on the clock change and you never have to remember it.
- Change the whole set at once: “Remove all used batteries from the device at the same time, and then replace them with new batteries of the same size and type.” Topping up one dead cell in a three-cell holder is not the intended practice.
- Never mix. “Don’t mix old and new batteries, or mix different types or makes of batteries. This can cause rupture or leakage, resulting in personal injury or property damage.” That includes the two brands in your kitchen drawer.
- Change chemistry if the location is hostile. Energizer’s L91 lithium AA datasheet gives storage and operating limits of -40°F to 140°F (-40°C to 60°C) and a shelf life of 25 years at 70°F (21°C), and the Li/FeS2 manual claims superior leakage resistance against other primary types. Whether your fixture accepts a different chemistry is worth settling first.
Keep spares in a drawer rather than loaded in the fixture. At 3% a year they are still good four winters later, and a cell that is not installed cannot leak into anything you own.
What I'd do
I would clean it, then change where the cells live rather than which I buy.
- Clean the springs today. A crust left since August only gets worse where it sits.
- Label the inside of the cover with the date the set went in. Two dates give you a real run time.
- Empty the porch fixture in October, refill it in April, and leave the indoor one loaded with a check every few months.
- If that wall has a socket, buy the plug-in version. It is the only version of this problem that goes away permanently.
- If it must be cordless and cold, pay the lithium premium for the -40°F (-40°C) rating rather than replacing a fixture.
