Plug-In Sconces for a Bedroom: What a Wall Box Really Is

Search plug in sconces for bedroom walls and half of what comes back is hardwired. A standard wall box is an outlet box already sunk into the wall, fastened to a stud or clamped through the plasterboard, with a live cable landing inside it. Hardwired to that box means the fitting has no cord and no plug: its leads are joined to the house wiring inside the box, and the backplate screws to the box rather than to the plaster.

The decision is not about bulbs or colour but about whether that box already sits behind the spot you chose. Every wall sconce Houseland lists carries the same line in its own spec table, hardwired to a standard wall box, no visible cord, so there is no plug-in version to retreat to. Box already there and in the right place: half an hour. No box: you have bought a wiring job, and its size depends on which country you are standing in.

What is a standard wall box, physically?

It is a metal or plastic can roughly the size of a deck of cards, fixed into the wall so its open face finishes flush with the surface. Three things belong in it and nowhere else: the splice between house cable and fitting leads, the screws that carry the weight, and enough spare wire to work with.

The code puts figures on all three, which makes them the quickest way to tell a real box from a hole with wires in it.

• At least 6 in of free conductor has to be there, measured from where the wire leaves its sheath. NEC 300.14 sets that floor and adds that where the opening is under 8 in in any dimension, which a sconce box always is, each conductor must reach 3 in past the opening. Two stubs you can barely twist mean somebody has already shortened them (2023 NEC text).
• The front edge cannot sit back more than 1/4 in (6 mm) behind the finished surface in plaster, tile, gypsum or other noncombustible walls, per NEC 314.20 (2017 wording). A box drowned under a skim coat is why some backplates refuse to pull up tight against the wall.
• The can has to be held by something. Wings gripping plasterboard make a container for a splice, not a mounting point, and that difference decides everything below.

Why did plug in sconces for a bedroom lead me to a hardwired one?

Because the phrase people type and the thing shops stock have drifted apart. Bedside is where a shopper most wants a cord and a socket, and also where makers most often design the cord out: a lead trailing down a headboard wall looks unfinished in the photograph that sells the lamp.

All five sconces in this range sit on the wired side of that line. Four print the phrase verbatim, hardwired to a standard wall box, no visible cord. The fifth prints hardwired, shade clips over the mounting bracket. No plug-in variant, no battery variant, no adapter hiding in the carton. The one lit wall piece Houseland sells with a plug on it is the capsule wall stem vase, whose Power line reads Battery LED or Plug-in LED, chosen at checkout, and that is a panel rather than a sconce.

Two exits from the mismatch, both answered elsewhere. Cutting the leads and fitting a plug to a hardwired sconce is a real question with a mostly discouraging answer. If you already own something that plugs in, putting it on a wall switch costs less than opening a wall.

How do I check whether there is a box in that wall?

Take the old fitting off and look, because nothing about the outside of a wall tells you what is behind it. Seven minutes with a screwdriver settles a question that otherwise gets settled by an electrician quoting in your bedroom.

1. Find the switch first. A bedroom switch with nothing obvious to switch usually means a lighting point exists on that circuit, or existed once and got plastered over.
2. Kill the circuit at the breaker or the consumer unit, then prove it dead at the fitting itself. A switch can be wired into the neutral on old work, so a dark bulb proves nothing.
3. Drop the backplate, usually two screws. Behind it you want a rim of metal or plastic sitting proud of the plaster, not bare cable disappearing into a hole.
4. Count conductors. Two wires and no neutral is a switch loop rather than a supply, and any fitting that wants a neutral, which is most, cannot run off it.
5. Push the box sideways with one finger. Movement means it is clamped to plasterboard only. That box will hold a splice and should not hold your sconce.
6. Pull the conductors out and measure. Under 6 in of slack and you are already outside NEC 300.14, a small job for an electrician and not one for you.
7. Nothing there at all: measure to the nearest existing point on that wall and note which way the studs run. Those two facts, not the fitting you liked, decide the price.

Is this a swap or a new point?

Swap if the box is sound and in the right place; new point for everything else. The row you land on was decided by whoever wired the house, not by you.

Paperwork splits at the same seam inside the United States. Washington's L and I leaflet for residential property owners lists like-in-kind replacement of lamps and single-family residential luminaires as work needing no permit, then puts all circuit wiring on the permit-and-inspection side (F500-078-000). Swap the fitting and nothing is filed. Move the point and you owe an inspection request within three business days of finishing, or one business day after any part of it goes live, with a penalty of up to $2,000 for working without the permit.

What does the code say about hanging the sconce on that box?

Treat the box as good for 50 lb unless its own interior says otherwise. NEC 314.27(A)(1) is written backwards from what people expect: a box at a luminaire outlet on a vertical surface only carries an interior weight marking when the figure is something other than 50 lb (section text). Which means the number that governs your wall is stamped where you cannot read it until the old fitting is already down. Read it while you are in there.

A second route exists for small fittings, and it is the one worth knowing at a bedside. A vertically mounted luminaire of no more than 6 lb may hang on a box or plaster ring that was never listed for fixture support, on one condition: no fewer than two No. 6 or larger screws, through the fitting's yoke or backplate, into the box. One screw does not satisfy it, and neither do screws into plaster instead of into the box.

Houseland publishes no fixture weight for any of the five sconces, which is the unhelpful half of this answer. You cannot hold ours against a marking below the default without a kitchen scale and five minutes. Painted iron shades on rubberwood bases are not chandeliers, but a spec table with no weight in it cannot settle a weight question, and saying so beats inventing a figure.

What if I am not in the United States?

The box may not exist as a concept where you live, and the legal line sits somewhere else. In England the wall behind a light fitting frequently has no outlet box at all: the joint gets made inside the fitting's own base, or in a back box chased into the masonry. Back boxes there are sold by depth rather than by fixture rating, 0.6 in (16 mm) for a plain switch and 1 in (25 mm) as the general-purpose size (depth reference), so a British reader hunting for a stamped weight rating will not find one.

Adding a wall light to an existing bedroom lighting circuit in England is not notifiable work. Approved Document P, 2013 edition, reproduces regulation 12(6A), which makes exactly three things notifiable: installing a new circuit, replacing a consumer unit, and any addition or alteration to existing circuits in a special location. Paragraph 2.7 closes the door on the rest: all other work is not notifiable, namely additions and alterations to existing installations outside special locations, and replacements, repairs and maintenance anywhere (Approved Document P). A special location is the space around a bath or shower, running to 7 ft 5 in (2.25 m) up and 24 in (0.6 m) out from the tub edge. A bedroom wall is not one.

New Zealand draws the line in the same place and lands somewhere harder. WorkSafe lets a homeowner remove and replace a light fitting outright. Install, extend or alter a sub-circuit and you may still do the work, but the finished job must be checked and tested by a licensed electrical inspector, who connects it and issues a Certificate of Compliance (WorkSafe guidance). You may not energise your own new point. Same fitting, same wall, three markets, three answers to one line in a spec table.

What I'd do

Take the old fitting down before buying anything, and photograph what is behind it, including any marking inside the box. One photograph answers the weight question, the slack question and the neutral question at once.

If the box is there, sound and central, buy the sconce and spend the saved afternoon choosing the bulb. If it is missing, decide early whether you want a wired point on that wall or just light beside the bed. Wanting light is cheap. Wanting a wired point in one specific spot is what costs, and a piece that hangs on a keyhole hanger and takes a plug is up by teatime. Those sit in the wall art collection rather than among the sconces, which is the honest summary of this page.

What I would not do is join the leads behind the plaster and skim over it. It works, right up to the day somebody else opens that wall and finds a splice with no box around it.
