Your glass cracked because boiling water heated its inner face faster than the outer face could follow, and pouring is the moment that gap is widest. Ordinary soda-lime drinkware takes a swing of only about 100 °F (40 °C) before it lets go; water off the boil is 212 °F and a tumbler on the worktop sits near 70 °F, so the pour was past the limit before the glass had a say.
What makes it feel random is that the same tumbler took the same pour for years. Glass gives way at the flaw it already carries — a nicked rim, a scraped base, a thick pressed foot — so the break waits for the day the water is hotter or the glass is colder. Here is how to sort a cupboard into what can take a kettle and what cannot, and the pour that keeps the survivors intact.

Why Does a Glass Crack When Pouring Boiling Water?
Glass carries heat badly, so the inside wall expands within a second while the outside wall has barely moved, and the strain between the two faces beats the glass. The borosilicate entry puts ordinary soda-lime at roughly a 100 °F (40 °C) differential; the Pyrex entry gives 99 °F (55 °C) for the same glass and 330 °F (183 °C) for borosilicate. Argue about which figure is right and you still lose: the gap between a boiling kettle and a room-temperature tumbler is 142 °F.
Rate is the villain, not heat. Thermal shock testing counts anything faster than 15 °C a minute as a shock (the standard definition), and a kettle does that inside one second. It is why a dish sits happily at 400 °F for an hour and splits the instant it meets a damp worktop, and why every real fix slows the change down instead of lowering the final temperature.

Which Glasses in Your Cupboard Can Take Hot Water?
Sort the cupboard by what the maker printed, not by how solid the glass feels in the hand.
- A base or box marked borosilicate, oven safe or freezer to oven is your hot-drink glass. Most glass teapots and pour-over carafes are in this group, and they are built for a 212 °F pour.
- Tempered drinkware publishes a number. Duralex says its tempered glass is 2.5 times stronger than ordinary glass and tells owners not to subject it to a sudden temperature change of more than 130 °C — about 234 °F of swing, which covers a kettle into a dry, room-temperature glass and does not cover one straight from the fridge.
- Unmarked multipack tumblers, wine glasses, jam jars and pasta-sauce jars are annealed soda-lime until something proves otherwise. Hold them to the 100 °F (40 °C) ceiling.
- Run a thumbnail round the rim and base first. After its investigation, Consumer Reports told readers to check glassware for damage and retire anything chipped or scratched, because a flaw is where the crack chooses to start.
- A cold glass is a different glass. From the fridge at 40 °F it faces a 172 °F jump to boiling water, against 142 °F for the same tumbler left on the counter.
Heft is the one signal worth ignoring. A heavy pressed base holds a steeper difference between its two faces than a thin blown wall does, which is why the crack so often starts down at the foot of the sturdiest-looking glass in the set.

Tempered vs Borosilicate: Which Glass Survives Boiling Water?
Borosilicate wins on heat, tempered soda-lime wins on drops, and shoppers swap the two round constantly.
Tempering squeezes the surface into compression, so the glass survives knocks and a wider temperature swing than annealed glass. What it cannot do is change how much the glass moves when it warms: borosilicate expands at 3.3 x 10-6 per kelvin, close to a third of soda-lime's rate, and that ratio is the whole reason lab glass and teapots are made of it.

The scale of the difference came out of a year-long Consumer Reports investigation, which examined 163 incidents, 152 of them from CPSC files, and found 42 reports of injury. Its own test filled pans with dry sand, heated them to 450 °F and set them on wet granite. The soda-lime dishes broke ten times out of ten at 450 °F, while European borosilicate pans came through and mostly failed only at 500 °F. Tempered is tougher than plain glass and still not shock-proof, and when it does go it goes everywhere at once.
Which Three Pours Actually Break Glass?
Three moves cause almost every glass breakage in a kitchen, and only the first is the one people brace for.
- Boiling water into a cold glass. The classic, and the easiest to dodge: the 212 °F front hits one face and the other face is still at 70 °F or lower.
- Cold liquid into hot glass. Pyrex puts it in capitals: DO NOT add liquid to hot glassware or ceramicware, place these hot items on a wet or cool surface, or handle these hot items with a wet towel, wet potholder or other wet cloth. Water into a hot roasting dish is the same event running backwards.
- Hot glass onto a cold or wet surface. This is the one that breaks bakeware. Stone worktops, steel draining boards and a puddled sink strip heat out of one face in seconds, which is why Pyrex asks you to land hot dishes on a cooling rack, a dry potholder or a dry cloth.
The oven cases sit on top of those three. America’s Test Kitchen, which has had three shattering incidents in its own kitchen in a decade, says to preheat fully before the dish goes in, to treat anything above 425 °F as risky for glass, and never to move a dish straight from freezer to oven or the reverse. Pyrex bans the stovetop, the broiler, the grill and open flame outright.
A glass candle jar dies the third way: hot wax pool, cold draught, damp shelf. A candle that keeps going out instead is a wick problem rather than a glass one.
How Do You Pour Boiling Water Into a Glass Safely?
Warm the glass before the water arrives; every other step is a refinement of that one.
- Half-fill the glass with hot tap water, swirl it, tip it out. IKEA gives this same step, and it drops the differential from 142 °F to something in the region of 80 °F before the kettle is anywhere near.
- Start shallow. A splash that covers the base, two seconds, then the rest, so the wall heats in stages rather than in one hit.
- Let the kettle stand a minute where the drink allows it. Black tea and coffee want water close to 200 °F, so for those, warm the glass rather than cool the water.
- Treat the metal spoon as a bonus, not a plan. Asked about it on the MadSci Network, an engineer said he could not call the spoon's contribution significant and named warming the cup as the move that actually works.
- Set the filled glass on wood, cork or a folded towel. Not on stone, not in a wet steel sink, and not under a running cold tap.
- Never pour into glass fresh from the fridge or freezer. Give it counter time until it stops feeling cold to the back of your hand.
Shell and wood run their own version of the rule. The coconut bowls Houseland sells are hand wash only in warm water, with dishwasher, microwave, oven and freezer ruled out on the listing, and they split for a cousin of this reason — why coconut bowls crack after the first wash works through it.
