Those white flakes in kettle water are limescale: calcium carbonate that came out of your tap water, plated onto the element over months, and broke loose the last time the kettle boiled hard. Which? describes limescale as a hard chalky substance made up mainly of calcium carbonate, and says it occurs completely naturally and is totally harmless to consume. The kettle is not shedding itself into your mug, and it does not need replacing.
What the scale does cost you is time on every boil, because it sits between the element and the water like a layer of chalk. Are the white flakes in my kettle limescale or something else?
Almost always limescale, and a spoonful of vinegar settles the question in under a minute. Fish a flake out, drop it into white vinegar and watch it. Carbonate scale fizzes in acid because the acid pulls the carbonate away as carbon dioxide gas, so a flake that bubbles is limescale and a flake that just sits there is not. Kettle deposit is not pure chalk either: alongside calcium carbonate it carries magnesium hydroxide and calcium sulfate, which is why it looks matte white rather than crystalline.
Three different things get called white flakes, and only one of them answers to descaling:
- Chalky grit that sinks to the bottom of the mug is scale, and it fizzes. It arrives in the first pour after a rolling boil, because that is when the layer on the element cracks.
- A dull, sometimes rainbow-tinted skin on the surface of the tea is not scale at all. It floats, it does not fizz, and it comes back on the next cup no matter how clean the kettle is.
- Soft white curls that smear between finger and thumb point upstream of the kettle. Scale is brittle and crushes to powder, so anything that squashes is more likely a gasket, a spent filter cartridge or something in the hot water line.
Do the vinegar test before you buy anything, because a descaler cannot fix a perished seal.
Why has the kettle started shedding flakes now?
Because the element has been plating itself quietly for months and scale only sheds once the layer is thick enough to crack off. Hardness reaches you as dissolved calcium bicarbonate. Heat drives carbon dioxide out of the water, the equilibrium tips back towards solid, and calcium carbonate drops onto the hottest surface available - the element, or the base plate over it in a concealed-element kettle.
Calcium carbonate is a chemical oddity, and that oddity is why a kettle scales faster than a cold pipe. Its solubility increases as the water gets colder, so the hotter the metal, the more eagerly the mineral leaves the water and settles on it. Water sitting in equilibrium with ordinary air holds only about 47 mg of calcium carbonate per litre. Push it to a boil and that ceiling drops, and the surplus has to land somewhere.
Your own kettle takes an arithmetic answer. Take the hardness figure from your water report in mg/L and multiply it by what you boil in a day: at 200 mg/L and 6 cups (1.4 litres) a day, roughly 280 mg of mineral passes through the kettle daily, about 8 g a month. Most of that leaves in the pour, but a fraction of 8 g a month is still a visible crust by spring.
The running cost is real, if small. Which? says scale "can make the heating element less effective so it takes longer, and uses more energy, to boil water". Time a full boil on your phone today, descale, then time it again - that gap is the only number about your kettle that is actually yours.

Is limescale in your tea actually harmful?
No. Which? states plainly that limescale is harmless to consume, and the WHO position quoted in the standard reference on hard water is that there is no convincing evidence that water hardness causes adverse health effects in humans. What you are drinking is calcium and magnesium that were already dissolved in the water before the kettle concentrated them into visible bits.
The skin on the surface of black tea is a separate problem, and descaling will not touch it. A 2023 paper in Soft Matter, Tea film formation in artificial tap water, brewed tea in artificial waters at 50, 100 and 200 mg of calcium carbonate per litre, and in pure water for comparison. Tea brewed in pure water formed no film at all, while black tea in mineral-bearing water grew a layer 17 nm thick after 1 hour and 20 nm after 2 hours. Calcium, magnesium and bicarbonate ions complexing with tea polyphenols at the surface are what build it.
So the 2 faults take 2 different fixes. Grit in the bottom of the mug is the kettle's fault and descaling ends it; the film across the top is the water's fault, and only softening or filtering the brewing water ends that one.
How do you descale a kettle with vinegar or citric acid?
Acid, heat, then patience - and 1 plain boil afterwards that most people skip. Check the manual first, because Bob Vila is right that some models name liquids that will damage them.
- Unplug the kettle and let it cool before anything goes in it. Acid on a hot element flashes off as vapour you do not want to breathe.
- For the vinegar route, fill the kettle halfway with equal parts cold water and white vinegar. That is Bob Vila's ratio; Which? runs the same 50/50 mix but takes it to about three quarters full for a heavily scaled kettle.
- Bring it to the boil, switch off, and leave the solution to sit 30 to 60 minutes. Contact time is doing the work here, not temperature - scale that has been growing since Christmas is not going to surrender in 5 minutes.
- For citric acid instead, use 1 to 2 tablespoons of powder in a half-filled kettle. Which? adds it to a freshly boiled half kettle and waits 15 to 20 minutes; the write-up at Kitchen Zoes uses the same 1 to 2 tablespoons and leaves it 30 minutes, or overnight for heavy scaling.
- Pour it out, rinse the inside under cold water, and wipe stragglers with a damp cloth. Do not scrape a stainless interior with anything metal; softened scale comes away under a cloth.
- Boil 1 full kettle of plain water and throw it away - this is the step everyone skips. Which? says to repeat that 2 or 3 times after vinegar to clear the traces that otherwise make the next brew taste odd.
Sachets and liquid descalers work too - Which? notes some claim results in as little as 2 minutes - but the chemistry underneath is the same acid on the same carbonate.

Vinegar vs citric acid: which one should you reach for?
Citric acid for a kettle you use daily, vinegar when the bottle is already open and the scale is thin. Both are weak acids and both dissolve carbonate; the difference is what they leave behind and how many rinse boils it costs you.

Neither is stronger than the other in any way you will notice on a 30-minute soak. If a kettle has been ignored for a year, run the treatment twice rather than doubling the dose once.
How often should a kettle be descaled where you live?
Set the interval by your hardness figure, not by the calendar. The USGS bands put 0 to 60 mg/L of calcium carbonate as soft, 61 to 120 as moderately hard, 121 to 180 as hard, and 181 and above as very hard, and the same reference notes more than 85% of American homes are on hard water. Which? recommends descaling every month or so as the general baseline, and more often for a glass kettle in a hard water area.
Two ways to get your number. Your utility must send you a Consumer Confidence Report by July 1 each year, and hardness is usually listed with the other unregulated parameters; failing that, a test strip reads in 30 seconds. Then work from the baseline:
- Soft water, under 60 mg/L: every 3 to 6 months, or when you can see it. Scale is not really your kettle's failure mode at this hardness.
- Moderately hard, 61 to 120 mg/L: roughly every 6 to 8 weeks. A film at the waterline shows up long before the flakes do.
- Hard, 121 to 180 mg/L: monthly, which is the interval Which? names. This is where most people live and where the flakes start.
- Very hard, above 181 mg/L: every 2 to 3 weeks. At 300 mg/L a kettle boiled 6 times a day builds a crust you can hear rattling.
The same mineral shows up all over the kitchen once you know its face: white rings on a dry hob, a cloudy tumbler, the pale spot left when a bead of water flashes off a preheated pan.

Write your hardness figure on a sticky note inside a cupboard door. The interval falls out of that number and stops being guesswork, the same way a knife's sharpening interval follows what you cut rather than what the calendar says. Then set a repeat reminder and never think about it again.
