5. Check the gap: the bottom edge wants 6 to 8 in (15 to 20 cm) of clear wall above the furniture. If the centre mark puts it closer than 6 in (15 cm), pick a shorter piece rather than raising the line.
6. Cut a paper template to the exact size of the piece, tape it up and leave it 24 hours. You will move it once, usually 2 to 3 in (5 to 8 cm) to one side.
7. Find the fixing last. Studs sit 16 in (406 mm) on centre in most plasterboard walls, and a laser cut MDF panel does not need one, so the template position wins over the stud position.

The 24 hour template is the step everyone skips and the one that saves the plaster. Two pencil marks and a sheet of newspaper cost nothing, and a hole in the wrong place costs filler, sanding and a repaint.

Where does the centre line sit on the wall above a sofa?

At 57 to 60 in (145 to 152 cm) from the floor, measured to the middle of the piece, and it does not change from room to room. That band is average standing eye level, which is why galleries hang to it and why a hallway, a landing and a living room read as one line when you keep to it.

The gap above the furniture is the override. If a tall sideboard pushes the bottom edge within 6 in (15 cm) of the surface, keep the 6 to 8 in (15 to 20 cm) of clear wall and let the centre climb, because the eye reads that gap and never reads the tape. With a piece 19.7 in (50 cm) tall, half that height sits above your pencil mark and half below it, so hang from the centre rather than measuring down from the ceiling. A tall ceiling does not move the line. It leaves more bare wall above the art, which is what a tall room is supposed to look like. One wide piece or a pair of tall pieces: which fits a narrow wall better?

Under 36 in (91 cm) of usable wall, one vertical piece wins, and a pair only works if both panels plus the gap between them still land inside your width band.

A pair reads as one object only when the gap is narrower than either panel. Cut a single spacer at 2 to 3 in (5 to 8 cm) and use the same one twice, because uneven gaps show from the far side of the room long before uneven heights do.
