What Size Wall Art Fits the Wall Between Two Windows?

Take the clear pier width and multiply it by 0.6 and by 0.75; anything between those two answers is a defensible art width, and every inch you have left goes into height. How do I measure the pier without guessing?

Why does the 60 percent rule break down on a narrow pier?

Because the same guides that hand you 60 to 75 percent also ask for 8 to 12 in of clear margin between art and the nearest molding, and on a pier those two instructions contradict each other. Take a 24 in pier: 60 percent of it is about 14 in, leaving 5 in of bare wall on each side, which is under half the margin the rule wants.

The margin rule is the one to drop: 3 to 4 in of bare wall each side is plenty here, because the window casing already does the job the margin was invented for. A margin exists to stop a piece colliding visually with the next object along. On this wall the next object is a painted frame with a hard edge, and it reads as a border whether you leave 3 in or 6 in.

The neat ratio quoted for narrow walls, roughly 1 to 1.5 width against height, is worth checking before you shop against it. I opened the size guide that figure usually gets attributed to and it does not contain it; what that guide actually gives is the furniture rule, two thirds to three quarters of whatever sits below. A pier has nothing below it, so the furniture rule has nothing to measure and the pier width is the only input you have.

Upright wins, and not for a style reason: height is the only way to gain surface area without touching a casing.

Light is the part people underestimate on this wall. How high should it hang when two windows set the eye line?

Centre it 57 to 60 in off the floor only when the windows give you nothing better to line up with. That range is the gallery default Mixtiles quotes as well, and it assumes the piece is judged against a floor and a ceiling. On a pier it is judged against two window heads sitting 6 in away, where a top edge that misses the head casing by 2 in is visible from the doorway.

• Line the top of the piece up with the head casing if it is tall enough to reach.
• If it falls well short, centre it in the glass band instead, level with the middle of the visible window, so it shares a horizontal zone with the view.
• If a console or a radiator sits under the pier, that object takes priority: leave 4 to 8 in of air above it and drop the floor measurement entirely.

Measure casing to casing, take 65 percent of it, then hunt for that shape rather than that size. Nine times in ten the answer is one upright piece 9 to 15 in wide with its top aligned to the head casing, not a small print centred by eye and not a horizontal frame cut down to fit.

If the pier reads dark for half the day, which most do once your eye has adjusted to the glass on either side, pick something that carries its own light.
