On a true limewash or a chalk finish, no. Adhesive hooks for wall hanging grip the outermost coating on your wall, and a mineral finish is a soft, open layer that lets go in a patch the shape of the pad. On a modern flat or matte latex that has fully dried, yes, with a lower ceiling than eggshell and a 5-minute check first.
Two different questions get tangled here, and only one of them is measured in days. How old the paint is, is a curing question. What the paint is made of, is a cohesion question, and that is the one that settles this. The hook has a ceramic base with a metal hook, is 2.4 in wide and 2.8 in high, comes in six colors, mounts with adhesive and no drilling, and comes one hook per variant.

The short answer
Paint type decides this, not the number of weeks since the wall was painted. A hook holds only as well as the coating beneath it holds to the wall, so the question is not how many lb the pack claims but whether your finish is a film or a powder.
- Limewash and lime plaster: skip adhesive completely. The finish is a permeable mineral layer built to wear and patina, and Bauwerk asks owners to leave a fresh wall alone for up to 2 weeks before even wiping it.
- Chalk-finish paint left unwaxed: same verdict. Its maker says cleaning alone can remove paint, and an adhesive pad keeps pulling harder for 72 hours as it flows into the surface.
- Flat or matte latex, fully dried: usually fine. Expect less margin than on semi-gloss, and spend 5 minutes on the tape check below, somewhere nobody looks.
Is the Adhesive Failing, or Is the Paint?
Most of the time the adhesive did its job for weeks and the wall gave way behind it. A pressure-sensitive pad holds by flowing into whatever it touches, so the joint has two possible weak points: the grip between pad and paint, and the paint's own strength against being torn apart. 3M's surface preparation bulletin for its VHB tapes sets the requirement in one line - the bonding surface must be stable or unified, clean and dry - and lists rough, porous or fibered materials as surfaces that must be sealed first to give the tape one solid thing to hold (technical bulletin, October 2017). A mineral wall finish fails the unified part by design, because it is made as an open breathable layer rather than a continuous skin.
The two failures leave different evidence, and 10 seconds spent looking at the pad tells you which one you have. Pad lifts clean, wall looks untouched: the bond never formed, which means contamination or less than the 15 psi of application pressure 3M asks for. Pad lifts carrying a disc of color: the coating tore inside itself, and no brand of hook fixes that. The second is what limewash does, and it is the same weakest-layer story as the paint that came off with your strips.
Why Won't Adhesive Hooks for Wall Hanging Stick to Limewash?
Limewash is not a film on the wall - it is mineral that has soaked in and set. Romabio's data sheet for Classico Limewash describes a paint of 97% natural mineral content, completely permeable and breathable, that anchors to mineral surfaces by carbonization, and it puts full cure at up to 20 to 25 days after application at 68 degrees F and 60% humidity (Classico Limewash data sheet). Bauwerk Colour, another limewash maker, describes the same structure from the other side: its paints do not create a film over the surface the way a conventional paint does, they penetrate the micro pore structure of the wall - and it warns that over sealed or previously painted walls the result is never as durable as over an absorbent mineral surface.
Two further lines settle it. Romabio says the finish was created to achieve an antique, distressed look and continues to patina, and the way to distress it is a garden hose outdoors or a spray bottle and a rag indoors, about 30 minutes after the coat goes on. Bauwerk tells owners to clean limewash by wiping lightly with a damp cloth, never scrubbing, never with soap, because that damages the surface (Bauwerk maintenance guidance). A coating you are meant to erode with a hose and can wreck with soapy water will not hold a loaded hook.
Romabio's production note puts the lime at 12 to 48 months of slaking and ageing before it becomes paint. Conservation guidance from Babergh and Mid Suffolk district councils in England calls finishes such as limewash a partially sacrificial layer, renewed on a cycle. Sacrificial is the right word, and with adhesive the sacrifice is yours.
Is Chalk Paint Any Different From Limewash?
Different chemistry, same practical problem: on a wall it is normally left unsealed for years. Annie Sloan's guidance on sealing Chalk Paint says the wax can be skipped on walls, where people want that chalky matt look, and warns in the same passage that unsealed work stays open to natural distressing, shows finger marks, and can lose paint to cleaning (how to seal Chalk Paint). Wax, if you use it, takes 5 days to 2 weeks to cure.
The sequence on a soft wall works against you at both ends. A pad has to be pressed hard to bond at all, and that pressure on an unsealed chalky film burnishes it into a shiny disc within seconds, even when nothing tears off. You can lose the finish going up and lose it again coming down. A sealed chalk wall, finished with a polyacrylic lacquer and given its 2 weeks to cure, behaves like ordinary paint instead, because you are no longer bonding to the chalk.

How Can I Tell What My Matte Wall Actually Is?
Three checks in a hidden corner answer it in 5 minutes. Work behind a door or below the furniture line.
- Water drop. Put one drop on the finish and give it 30 seconds. Mineral coatings drink it in and darken; a latex film holds it as a bead. Romabio's own site check before limewashing is this same test - a wall that will not take water readily will not take limewash either.
- Dry thumb. Rub a clean dry thumb across the finish for 5 seconds and look at your skin. Any pigment on your thumb means the surface is powdering, and powder gives an adhesive nothing to hold.
- Tape. Press a short strip of clear packing tape down hard, leave it a minute, then pull it straight back at a sharp angle and look at the sticky side under a light.
Color on the tape means the wall is the weak link, and no hook of any brand changes that. Tape that comes away clean, on a finish that beads water, points to a modern matte and a fair chance. Read the patch head-on and across the light, since a flat finish changes character at a raking angle and a burnished spot shows from one side only.
Limewash vs Chalk Finish vs Cured Matte: What Will Hold?
Sorted by what the coating actually is, rather than how smooth it feels, the 6 rows below line up cleanly.
| Finish | What the coating is | Tape check | Adhesive hook |
|---|---|---|---|
| Limewash, lime plaster | Mineral soaked into the wall, permeable, made to patina | Lifts color | No |
| Chalk-finish paint, unwaxed | Soft matte layer, deliberately unsealed | Lifts color or burnishes | No |
| Chalk-finish paint, lacquered | Polyacrylic varnish over the chalk | Clean | Fair, check first |
| Flat or matte latex, dry through | Continuous film with an open surface | Clean | Yes, less margin |
| Eggshell, satin, semi-gloss | Continuous film, tighter surface | Clean | Best painted case |
| Soft or powdery bare plaster | Not a coating at all, a friable substrate | Lifts dust | No |
The split is not smooth against rough. It is film against powder. Paint makers treat a powdery surface as a defect to fix first: Sherwin-Williams' data for its Duration Home interior latex matte requires bare plaster to be cured and hard, and sends textured, soft, porous or powdery plaster back for 1 pint of household vinegar in 1 gallon of water, repeated until it is hard (product data sheet). 3M's remedy for a weak painted surface is a 180 to 320 grit abrasion. Neither remedy survives contact with limewash, because both of them strip the 1 coat that is the entire finish.

What Should the Hook Go On Instead?
Move the hook off the wall finish onto something with a skin of its own, and the limewash stays untouched.
- Glazed tile, glass or a mirror. Hard, non-absorbent, and a splashback or a shower screen usually sits within reach of where the hook was going.
- A door, a cabinet side or painted metal. Factory finishes are films that hold for years, and a door edge takes the coat you meant for the wall.
- A rail rather than a point. A rail fixed through the finish into the substrate carries 4 or 5 items from 2 holes, instead of dotting pads across the wall.
- Screws into the wall behind the finish. A filled screw hole is a 10-minute local repair. A peeled patch is not: Bauwerk's instruction for damage is a fresh coat to the nearest break such as a corner, and only whites spot-repair reliably, so matching a tinted limewash means matching a batch as well as a color.
Drilling sounds like the bigger intervention; on this finish it is the smaller one, by a whole wall. Fixing properly is the same job as setting a hanging bracket the first time, and if you do patch, reading the undertone you are matching saves the second attempt. The ceramic wall hook we sell, and the rest of the wall shelves and hooks, belong on the tile and glass half of that list.

Run the tape check before buying anything; it settles the question in under 2 minutes. Color on the tape, or pigment on a dry thumb, and I would not put an adhesive pad on that wall at any weight - the hook moves to tile, to a door, or to a rail fixed into the substrate, and the limewash stays intact.
Clean tape and water that beads, and I would go ahead on a wall dry through, press the pad hard and flat, and hang something I can afford to drop while I watch it for a week. Houseland publishes no weight rating, no temperature range and no surface list for its hook - material, size, colors, adhesive no-drill mounting and one hook per variant is the entire spec table - so there is no number I can hand you that would make a soft mineral finish safe. On limewash the honest answer stays no, and it is the wall saying it, not the hook.
