Three layers stepping down to a tail, so one piece fills height without width

A narrow wall gets one shot. Hang something square on it and the wall looks crowded; hang something small and it looks abandoned. What actually works is a shape that is wide at the top and narrow at the bottom - it holds the top of the wall, then draws the eye down a line instead of across a block.

That is what this is. A dark wood bar carries three layers of cord: a full-width cream layer at the back, a shorter amber layer over it, and a narrow core layer in front that keeps running after the other two have stopped. Each layer starts under a chunky knotted V - a scallop of thick knots that dips in the middle - so the top edge is a series of overlapping curves rather than a straight line.

The result is a fringe wall hanging with real vertical movement and a deliberately uneven hem. It reads as boho wall decor from across a room and as a knotted wall hanging up close, where the scallops are the only knotwork on the piece. We describe cotton yarn on a wooden top bar.

What you get

  • One hanging, one color. Green or red. Both are three-layer pieces on the same dark bar.
  • Three cord layers, stepped. Widest and shortest at the back, narrowest and longest at the front - the front layer is what gives the piece its tail.
  • Knotted V scallops. A band of chunky knots dipping to a point at the top of each layer. It is the only knotwork on the object and it is what separates the layers visually.
  • A dark wood top bar, flat and squared, running the full width of the back layer.
  • No fixings. None included, and none described.

Dimensions: what is known, and what is not

This is the one section where we have to be blunt.

It is also the case that the styled photographs for this piece appear to be computer-generated rather than photographed: the lighting, the furniture and the proportions are too consistent across scenes, and the one image with a person in it does not survive scrutiny. So unlike other products in this collection, where we scale an estimate off a real photograph and say so, we will not give you a number here. A figure derived from a render is worth nothing.

Proportion, which is knowable Roughly three times as tall as it is wide, read consistently across all eight images. Whatever the absolute size, it is a tall narrow piece and not a square one.
What to do If the exact size matters to your wall, message us before ordering and we will ask we. We would rather do that than print a number we cannot stand behind.

How to hang it

One fixing behind the wood bar, or two if the bar turns out to be wide - check what arrives. The bar is the rigid part, so the piece hangs level by itself and does not need adjusting once it is up.

Hang it high and leave the bottom clear. The whole design is the step-down to a long front layer, and that only reads when the tail has empty wall beneath it. Over a console or a bench, our own staging puts the bar well above the furniture and lets the tail run down past it.

Cord arrives folded. Run your fingers down through each layer separately, starting at the scallop and working to the ends, and let it hang a day before you judge the hem. Separating the three layers by hand is what makes the stepping visible - straight out of the packet they compress into one mass.

Do not hang it where a door swings or a chair backs into it. Three loose layers snag on each other as readily as on furniture, and re-separating them is fiddly.

Picking a color

Both versions share the same cream and amber outer layers. Only the front core layer changes, so the choice is narrower than it looks in the thumbnails.

Red is a brick or terracotta red rather than a bright one, and against cream and amber it reads as the warm option - it belongs in a room with wood, rattan, leather or clay in it. It is the stronger of the two from a distance, because the red core reads as a clear vertical line down the middle.

Green is a deep forest green, and it is the cooler, quieter choice. Against the same amber and cream it reads as a contrast rather than a gradient, which suits a white or gray wall where the red version would dominate.

Where this actually earns its place

The narrow wall first. A tall three-layer piece is built for the pier between two windows, the strip beside a doorway or the end of a hallway - the walls where a framed print is the wrong shape. That is narrow wall decor in the literal sense, and it is what the stepped hem is for.

Second, above a console, a bench or a shoe rack by the front door. The bar holds the top of the wall and the long front layer runs down behind whatever sits on the surface, which is a kind of depth entryway wall decor rarely has.

Third, above a bed as one of a pair. At this proportion a single piece can look lost over a double headboard, but two hung either side of center fill the wall without a big flat rectangle. As above bed wall decor it has no glass and nothing hard, which matters directly over a pillow.

Honest limits

  • No dimensions exist for this product. None. Not width, not length, not weight, and there is no size diagram. This is the single biggest gap on this page and we would rather say it loudly than bury it.
  • The photographs appear to be computer-generated. That is why we will not scale an estimate off them, and it is why you should treat the room settings as mood rather than as evidence of scale or of how the cord behaves.
  • The description text says cotton yarn, without a percentage. We publish both and claim neither.
  • The layers tangle with each other. Three loose lengths at three different drops will merge into one mass in transit and after any knock. Separating them by hand is part of owning it.
  • No care instructions. Nothing published. Dust and comb only.

Before you buy

How big is it?

We do not know, and we are not going to guess. What is consistent across every image is the proportion: roughly three times as tall as it is wide. If the exact size matters, message us before ordering and we will ask.

Why can't you just estimate it?

Because an estimate is only as good as the image it comes from. Elsewhere in this collection we scale figures off real photographs of a person holding the product and label them as our estimate. The images here do not look photographed, so a number derived from them would be invented rather than measured.

What is the difference between green and red?

Only the front layer. Both versions have the same cream back layer and amber middle layer; the core layer that runs longest is either deep forest green or brick red. Red reads warmer and stronger from a distance; green reads as a contrast against the amber.

Is it macrame?

Not really. The only knotwork is the chunky V scallop at the top of each of the three layers. Everything below that is hanging cord. Our text uses the word; the object is a layered fringe hanging with knotted headers.

Is it cotton?

Cotton yarn. We report both and do not claim cotton.

How do I get the layers to sit separately?

By hand, once it is hanging. They compress into one mass in the packet. Run your fingers down through each layer in turn, starting at the scallop, and let it settle for a day - the stepping only becomes visible once the three are separated.

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers about the materials, care and everyday use — no fine print.

What is the difference between the two options?

Green is a deep green center over cream, and is the quieter of the two. Red is a brick red center with mustard and cream, and reads considerably warmer and stronger.

How much space does it need below?

More than most pieces here, because the lowest layer drops well below the main body. Measure from the fixing point down to whatever furniture sits underneath before you drill.

How do I hang it?

From the batten. No hardware is supplied and no weight is published.

Does it need one fixing or two?

One is usually enough on a piece this narrow, but two keeps the batten level and stops it rotating over time.

What is the knotted pattern for?

It joins the layers. The chunky V scallops sit exactly where the front and back curtains meet, so the knotwork is structural as well as decorative.

How do I clean it?

Vacuum on low suction, downwards, taking each layer separately so the front is not dragged across the back.

Where does it work?

Above a headboard, beside a bookcase, or above a console. All three photographs use placements that give the tail somewhere to hang.

Can it go in a bathroom?

Nothing in the source supports it, and a stained wood batten in a damp room is a poor idea.

What should I hang on the wall above my bed?

One object at about two thirds the headboard width. This piece is tall and narrow, so it suits the wall beside a bed rather than the wall above it.

What is good boho wall decor for a rental apartment?

Light, unframed, one fixing. Layered fringe also hides an uneven wall behind it, which is a genuine advantage in an old rental.

What can I put above my headboard instead of a picture frame?

Something soft and wide. This is narrow rather than wide, so above a headboard it would need a partner; on its own it suits the side wall.

What goes on a narrow wall between two windows?

A vertical piece narrower than the pier. That is exactly this shape, and the three stepped layers give it more presence than a plain narrow panel would have.

How do I hang something on a plaster wall without cracking it?

Drill slowly on a low speed with a masonry bit, and use a plug. Hammering a nail into old lime plaster is what cracks it, not drilling.

What is a good housewarming gift under 100 dollars?

Something for a wall, light and narrow enough to suit a room you have not seen. Narrow is genuinely the safer gift shape.

How do I make a dorm room feel less bare?

One textile on the main wall and a warmer bulb. Institutional lighting is what makes a dorm read as institutional, and it is the cheapest thing to change.

How do I get the creases out of a fringe wall hanging?

Hang it and wait two days. On a layered piece also run your hand down between the layers, which separates them so each falls under its own weight.

What wall decor is renter friendly and leaves no damage?

Light unframed pieces on adhesive strips, removed slowly. Most damage happens on removal rather than on hanging, which is the part people rush.

How wide should wall art be compared to the bed?

About two thirds the headboard width. That is the single most useful rule in the category and the one most commonly ignored.

What is a good backdrop for a small wedding ceremony?

Full height textile. This piece has the drop but not the width, so it works flanking an arch rather than filling it.

Is a wall hanging or a mirror better above a bed?

A hanging. A mirror above a bed reflects the ceiling, catches light awkwardly and is heavier to fix safely above a sleeping head.

How do I style a reading nook corner wall?

Hang for the seated eye line, which is lower than standing height. A narrow vertical in the corner behind a chair works because it fills the height without crowding the chair.

Do fringe wall hangings collect dust?

They do, on the horizontal faces where the layers overlap. Vacuum each layer separately on the lowest suction rather than dragging the head across the front.

How do I hang a wall hanging from a wooden dowel?

Cord over a hook, or two hooks under the dowel ends. This one is on a flat batten rather than a round dowel, which sits flatter against the wall.

What green wall decor works in a neutral bedroom?

A deep green rather than a sage, if the room is entirely neutral. The green option here is a deep green over cream, which gives the room one clear anchor.

What is a good gift for someone moving into a first apartment?

Something for a wall, light enough to hang without tools. Narrow pieces are the safer gift because they fit walls you have not measured.

How do I hang wall decor on a dorm cinder block wall?

Adhesive hooks rated for block, or over-the-door hooks if the wall refuses. Cinder block is the one surface where standard strips regularly fail.

How do I stop a wall hanging curling at the ends?

Hang it and leave it. On a layered piece the front panel sometimes lifts at the hem for a few days and then drops; weighting it distorts the layers instead.

What decor fills a tall narrow wall space?

A vertical piece narrower than the space. This one steps down twice, which draws the eye further down the wall than a plain panel of the same length.

How long does handmade wall decor take to ship?

Check the product page for current times. This ships from us rather than a workshop, so treat it as a standard import timeline.

What boho decor works for a wedding sweetheart table?

Two narrow pieces flanking the table rather than one behind it, which frames the couple instead of backing them. This shape is right for that.

What is a good anniversary gift that is handmade?

Be careful with the word. This is an import described by its seller as handmade, which is not the same as a documented maker. For an anniversary, buy from someone who names the person who made it.

How do I hang wall art on a brick wall in a loft?

A masonry bit and a plug into the mortar rather than the brick face. Mortar is softer, easier to drill and easier to make good if you move the piece later.

What decor makes a bedroom feel warmer in winter?

Textiles at more than one height and warmer bulbs. The red option here carries brick and mustard, which reads warmer than the green in the same room.

Can I hang a fiber wall hanging on a covered porch?

Nothing in the source supports it. Even under cover, cord holds overnight damp and a stained batten moves with humidity.

Do wall hangings need to be dry cleaned?

No. Dry cleaning solvents are hard on dyed fiber and on wood, and a hung piece never gets dirty the way clothing does. Dusting is the whole routine.

What is a good backdrop for a baby shower photo corner?

Neutral fiber at two heights. A narrow piece works better in a corner than a wide one, because corners have height rather than width to fill.

What wall decor looks good over a dresser?

Something narrower than the dresser, hung with clearance above whatever sits on it. A narrow vertical suits a tall chest; a wide piece suits a low one.

How big is it?
