There are two ways to put this on a pole, and one of them looks much better

Most macrame curtains give you a row of loops and leave you to it. This one ships with a cord - we call it the serial rope - threaded through every loop along the top edge, which holds the header square in the packet. You can leave it in and slide your pole through underneath, which takes ten seconds. Or you can take it out and thread each knotted loop onto the rod individually, which takes ten minutes and looks considerably better.

We explain this in its own instructions, and it is reproduced below, because it is the difference between a curtain that hangs from a visible cord and one that appears to grow out of the pole.

The curtain itself is a macrame door curtain in undyed cream cotton: a deep knotted header of eyes and diamonds across the top, dropping into long twisted strands that run to the hem. We declare 100% cotton and machine washable. One pattern, three sizes - unlike many listings in this category, the design does not change with the measurement.

What you get

  • One panel, in the size you select. A doorway you want to part from both sides needs two.
  • A knotted header with loops, already strung on a connecting cord so the top edge holds its shape in transit.
  • Long twisted strands below the header, running the full drop to a loose hem.
  • The same pattern in every size. 90 x 180, 95 x 200 and 100 x 200 cm all carry the identical eye-and-diamond header.
  • No rod. Our own instruction sheet says it in red: the stick needs to be prepared by oneself. No brackets or fixings either.

Dimensions, and choosing a size

Three sizes, one design. The figures below the sizes are our arithmetic for fitting a doorway.

90 x 180 cm The short one. Suits a low opening, an archway, a window or a doorless closet - not a standard 200 cm door, where it will finish 20 cm above the floor.
95 x 200 cm The default for a standard interior doorway of about 80 x 200 cm: 15 cm of width to spare, full height.
100 x 200 cm The widest. Better for a wide opening, an alcove, a room divider or a backdrop, and the one to pick if you intend to tie the panel back to one side.
Standard doorway About 80 x 200 cm. Aim for 15-20 cm more width than the opening - a curtain cut to the exact width hangs flat and looks thin.
Where the length is measured from The top of the header, not the rod. Mount the pole high enough that the strands end where you want them.

How to hang it

Buy the pole after the curtain arrives. The loops are a fixed size, no rod diameter is published, and a pole that is a millimeter too fat is a wasted purchase.

Method one, fast: leave the connecting cord in place and slide the pole through the row of loops underneath it. Nothing to undo and nothing can go wrong. The cord stays visible along the top.

Method two, better: remove the connecting cord, then feed the pole through each knotted loop in turn. The header then sits directly on the rod with no cord above it, which is how it is meant to look. Work from one end and keep the loops in order.

Our two methods for threading the curtain onto a pole

Mount the brackets above the door frame, not inside the reveal - a curtain hung inside the opening catches on the architrave every time somebody walks through. Above and slightly wider, and the strands part cleanly.

In a doorway in daily use, tie the panel back rather than pushing through it. We photograph both panels tied at the sides, and it is the arrangement that keeps long twisted strands from working themselves into knots at the bottom.

Where this actually earns its place

The doorway with no door: a pantry arch, a closet without doors, the opening between a kitchen and a hall. A cord curtain marks the threshold and softens the frame without closing it, and it is far less work than fitting a door. That is the boho door curtain case and the one we lead with.

Second, a window. At 95 or 100 cm wide this covers a standard casement, and as a macrame curtain in front of glass it filters light into a pattern on the floor rather than blocking it - which is the entire point and also the entire limitation.

Third, as a macrame room divider across an alcove or a bed recess, and as a wedding backdrop, which is the use it photographs best in - hung clear of a wall with light behind it. Cord curtains do very little against a solid surface and a great deal with daylight coming through.

Honest limits

  • No rod, no brackets, no fixings. We print this in red on its own instruction sheet, which tells you how often it gets missed. Budget for a pole and two brackets.
  • No privacy and no light blocking. Open twisted cord. It filters and it patterns; it does not screen. If you need a door, this is not one.
  • One panel per order. Every photograph of a doorway with both sides tied back shows two curtains.
  • The craft fields contradict each other - knit in one, woven in another - and the object is knotted.
  • Long twisted strands tangle, particularly in a doorway in daily use. Tie it back, and expect to comb the ends occasionally.
  • 90 x 180 cm will not reach the floor in a standard doorway. A standard door opening is 200 cm. Check before you choose the short one.

Before you buy

Does it come with a rod?

No. Our own instruction sheet says, in red, that the stick needs to be prepared by oneself. Brackets and wall fixings are also yours to supply.

What is the cord threaded through the top?

A connecting cord that holds the header square in transit. You can leave it in and slide your pole through underneath, or remove it and thread the pole through each knotted loop individually - which looks better, because the header then sits directly on the rod.

Which size fits a normal doorway?

95 x 200 cm. A standard interior doorway is about 80 x 200 cm, so that gives 15 cm of width to spare and the full height. The 90 x 180 cm panel will stop about 20 cm short of the floor in the same opening.

Does the pattern change with the size?

No. All three sizes carry the identical eye-and-diamond header. Only the measurement changes, which is not true of every macrame curtain.

Will it give me privacy?

No. It is open twisted cord: it filters light into a pattern, softens a doorway and marks a threshold, but you can see straight through it.

Can I machine wash it?

We say yes. We would not - a meter of knotted cotton cord tangles in a drum and takes days to dry. Spot clean it, or hand wash it flat if it really needs it.

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers about the materials, care and everyday use — no fine print.

Does it block draughts or sound?

No. It is open cord with gaps between the strands. It changes how an opening looks, not how it performs.

How do I hang it?

On the wooden rod that comes with it, using two brackets or hooks at the ends. Brackets, hooks and screws are not supplied.

Can I hang it inside the door frame?

Yes, if the frame is deep enough for the rod and its brackets. Fitting it inside the reveal gives a neater line than hanging it on the face of the wall above.

Can I tie it back?

Yes. Gathering it to one side turns it from a screen into a soft frame for the opening, and there is nothing on the piece that stops you.

What is it made of?

Cotton cord with a clear three ply twist, on a plain wooden rod. The seller describes it as hand-woven; that is its description, reported rather than verified.

Is there a color choice?

No. Natural undyed cream is the only colorway on this piece, and there is no color selector to change it. The only choice you make here is the size.

Does it work as a wedding backdrop?

Yes, and we photograph it that way. The 200 cm drop reads at standing height and the open knotwork catches light instead of going flat in photographs.

Can I use it on a window?

Yes, though at 180 to 200 cm of drop it is long for most windows. It suits a full height window or a glazed door better than a standard casement.

Can it go outside?

Nothing in the source supports outdoor use. For a dry outdoor ceremony it would be fine for the day, but it is not an outdoor product.

How do you hang a macrame door curtain without drilling holes?

A tension rod inside the door reveal, which needs no fixings at all. It is the main reason a door curtain suits a rental: nothing goes into the wall and nothing has to be filled when you leave.

Are macrame door curtains good for renters?

They are one of the best changes a renter can make. A tension rod leaves no trace, the curtain comes with you, and it softens an opening that would otherwise stay bare for the whole tenancy.

What is a macrame door curtain actually used for?

Marking an opening without closing it. It gives a doorway definition, filters light and softens the sound a little, while people and air still pass through freely.

How much does a macrame door curtain cost?

It varies with size and whether it is handmade or imported. This is an import with no named maker, so judge it against other imports rather than against studio work.

What can I hang in a doorway instead of a door?

A full length curtain, which is the usual answer where a door will not fit or is not permitted. Be clear on the trade: visual separation, and no sound or light privacy at all.

Is macrame safe to hang around babies and cribs?

A full length curtain of loose cord at child height is the one placement we would avoid. On a wall above head height it is a different question; in a doorway a toddler will reach it.

What is the best boho wall hanging for a wedding backdrop?

Something full height and matt. A 200 cm curtain reads behind a standing couple, and the knotwork catches light rather than flattening under a flash.

How wide is a standard interior door in inches?

Usually 30 to 32 inches, about 76 to 81 cm, with the opening a little wider than the leaf. That is why a 90 to 100 cm curtain is right: it gathers rather than sitting exactly flush.

How do I decorate a big blank wall in my bedroom cheaply?

Textiles cover more wall per pound than anything framed. This piece is built for an opening rather than a wall, though at 200 cm of drop it will hang flat against one if you want it to.

What do you use as a room divider in a studio apartment?

Something that breaks the sight line without blocking light. An open knotted curtain does exactly that, where a bookcase or a screen makes the far half of the room dark.

Do macrame curtains block light?

Barely. The cords hang open with gaps between them, so light and sight both pass through. Use it as a softening layer over a blind rather than as the blind itself.

Is 100 percent cotton macrame better than polyester rope?

Softer and it combs out better; against that it fades faster in strong sun.

How do you hang macrame on a wooden dowel?

This one comes on its rod already. For a piece that does not, loop the cords over the dowel and bind each loop, or run a cord between the dowel ends and hang from that.

How do I style a boho bedroom on a budget?

Dress the openings before the walls. A curtained doorway and a soft window do more for how a bedroom reads than a third wall piece, and both cost less than furniture.

What are cheap wedding backdrop ideas under 100 dollars?

One full height textile piece, reused afterwards. It photographs better than fabric draping because it has texture, and it costs once rather than per event.

How do you clean a cotton macrame curtain without shrinking it?

Do not wet it at all. Cotton cord shrinks unevenly across knotted and unknotted sections, so the piece comes back a different shape. Vacuum on low suction instead.

Macrame door curtain or beaded curtain, which is better?

Macrame is quieter, warmer looking and filters light softly. Beaded curtains rattle, catch on clothing and read as a period reference. Macrame is the more durable choice in both senses.

What can I put in a doorway to separate two rooms?

A full length curtain, a folding screen or nothing. The curtain is the only one of the three that leaves both rooms lit, which is usually the reason the doorway has no door in the first place.

How long should a door curtain be?

To the floor or just above it. Measure from where the rod will sit down to the floor and choose the nearest size under that, since a curtain pooling on the floor collects dust in the fringe.

Is macrame still in style in 2026?

In doorways more than on walls. A knotted curtain does a job, which is what has kept it current while purely decorative macrame panels have cooled.

What is a good housewarming gift for someone who likes boho decor?

Something for an opening or a window. Those are the parts of a new flat that stay bare longest, and unlike wall art a curtain does not assume a room size.

Will a macrame curtain work on a closet doorway?

Yes, and it is a common use where closet doors have been removed. It softens the opening but does not hide what is behind it, so it suits a tidy closet better than a full one.

What wall decor works in a dorm room without nails?

Tension rods in any recess and adhesive strips elsewhere. A door curtain on a tension rod is one of very few dorm changes that leaves genuinely no trace.

What is the best neutral wall hanging for a living room?

Undyed cream, if the wall behind it is not also cream. Neutral pieces need either contrast against the wall or strong side light, or they disappear entirely.

Do macrame curtains shed or fray over time?

Cotton cord fluffs at cut ends with handling, which is normal. Genuine fraying only starts if a bound end is cut past its binding, which is why the ends should be left alone.

What is 90x180 cm and 100x200 cm in inches?

About 35 by 71 inches and 39 by 79 inches. The third size here, 95 by 200 cm, is about 37 by 79 inches.

Can macrame be hung outside on a covered porch?

Nothing in this our listing supports outdoor use. Even under cover, cotton cord holds overnight damp and grays within a season.

What is a good gift for someone moving into a first apartment?

Something for a doorway or a window rather than a wall. Those are the things a first flat has no budget for, and they need no decision about the recipient's taste in art.

What color wall hanging goes with plain white walls?

Almost anything, which is the problem: with no constraint the choice is only about the room. Undyed cream reads as texture on white; a strong color reads as the single object in the room.

Can I hang this in front of a window rather than a doorway?

You can, though at 180 to 200 cm of drop it is long for a standard casement. It suits a full height window or a glazed door, where the length has somewhere to go.

Does an open curtain make a small room feel smaller?

Less than a solid one does. Because you see through it, the eye still reads the full depth of both spaces, which is the main argument for an open knotted curtain over a fabric panel in a small flat.
