A bead line drawn in mid-air, with a tassel hem repeating it below

The wall above a bed is the hardest one in the house to get right. It is wide, it is seen mostly from below and from the side, and anything with a hard rectangular edge argues with the headboard under it. What works there is a horizontal line that is not a frame.

This is over the bed wall art built as exactly that. Fine cream cords hang from a dark wood batten and nearly disappear against a pale wall. Threaded across them is a line of pale wooden beads that zigzags, and below it a row of tassels repeats the same zigzag in cream with either green or brown. What you see from the bed is two parallel wave lines floating on the wall with no visible support.

We declare 100% cotton for the cord and records the technique as handmade. Two shapes are offered, Type M and Type N, which run the wave in opposite directions.

What you get

  • One hanging, in the option you pick. Shape and color are a single choice; there is no separate size axis.
  • A dark wood batten the full width of the piece, with the cords fixed along it and a plain squared profile.
  • A zigzag bead line. Pale round beads threaded across the cords, forming the upper wave.
  • A tassel hem following the same wave, alternating cream with the accent color so the line reads clearly from a distance.
  • No fixings. None included, and a full-width batten wants two.

Dimensions: what is published, and what is not

This is where we have to be straight with you. We checked all of them.

The styled photographs are also not photographs. Across the eight images and the four option shots, the lighting, the bedding and the proportions are too consistent from scene to scene, and the hands in the one image with a person in it do not survive close inspection. These are renders. So unlike elsewhere in this collection, where we scale an estimate off a real photograph of a person holding the product and label it as ours, we will not put a number here. One derived from a render would be invented.

Proportion, which is knowable Wide and shallow - roughly twice as wide as it is deep, consistent across every image. Whatever the absolute size, this is a horizontal piece and not a square one.
What to do If the exact width matters - a specific headboard, an alcove, a fixed run of wall - message us before ordering and we will ask we. We would rather do that than print a figure we cannot stand behind.

How to hang it

Two fixings, not one. A batten this wide carrying cord, beads and tassels will sag and rotate on a single central hook. Set them well inside the ends of the bar, mark both, and check with a level before drilling - on a symmetrical zigzag hem, a batten a few millimeters out of true makes the two halves of the wave stop matching, which is immediately obvious.

Hang it by the lowest point of the wave. The tassel hem is the bottom of the piece, and its deepest point is not at the ends. Decide where the lowest tassel should sit relative to the headboard - about 20 cm of clear air is right - and work upward from there.

Straighten the cords before you judge the wave. The cords arrive with a curl from packing and will hang unevenly for a day or two, which pulls the bead line out of shape and makes the zigzag look wrong. Run your fingers down each section and let the weight of the beads settle it. The tassels themselves need only a light comb.

Light it from the side. Cream cord on a pale wall is nearly invisible, which is the point - but the beads only read as a floating line when something casts a shadow. A bedside lamp to one side does more for this piece than a ceiling light.

Picking a shape and a color

Type M peaks at the ends and dips in the middle, so the hem reads as two rising shoulders with a valley between them. Over a headboard it frames the pillows - the low point sits centrally above the middle of the bed.

Type N runs the wave the other way: low at the ends, rising through the middle. It reads as a single arc and draws the eye to the center of the wall rather than to its edges. It is also the pricier of the two, with no stated reason.

Green is a soft sage alternating with cream. It is the cooler option and the one that works with linen, oak and plants.

Coffee runs a mid-brown and a darker taupe with cream. It is warmer, it holds up better against a beige or clay wall, and it is the option we photograph most.

Where this actually earns its place

Above the bed, which is what the proportion is for. A wide, shallow piece sits in the band between the top of a headboard and the ceiling line without crowding either, and because the hem is a wave rather than a straight edge it does not read as a second headboard. There is no glass and no frame, which matters directly above a pillow.

Second, behind a sofa or above a console - the same horizontal band, a different room. Beads and tassels at this density take some hard sound out of a wall, which a framed print does not, and the cream cords keep the piece from dominating a room that already has pattern in it.

Third, an entryway bench or a landing wall. We photograph it above a bench, and it works there for the same reason: a long low horizontal line above a long low object. As plain boho wall decor it is a quiet piece up close and a graphic one from across a room.

Honest limits

  • There are no dimensions for this product. None. Not width, not drop, not weight, and no size diagram anywhere. This is the single biggest gap on this page and we would rather say it loudly than bury it in a spec table.
  • The photographs appear to be computer-generated. That is why we will not scale an estimate off them, and it is why you should treat the bedrooms as mood rather than as evidence of scale.
  • Type N costs more than Type M with no stated difference in size, weight or construction - only the direction of the wave. If the two turn out to be the same object, the price gap is arbitrary.
  • The bead material is not declared. They photograph as pale wood. Nobody has said so.
  • "Macrame" in our title is wrong. There is no knotwork on this. Cords hang from a bar, beads are threaded across them and tassels are tied on below.
  • No care instructions. Nothing published. Dust it, comb the tassels, and do not wash a beaded cord panel.

Before you buy

How big is it?

We do not know, and we will not guess. What is consistent is the proportion: roughly twice as wide as it is deep. If the exact width matters, message us before ordering and we will ask.

Why can't you estimate the size?

Because an estimate is only worth the image it comes from. Elsewhere in this collection we scale figures off real photographs of a person holding the product and label them as our estimate. The images here do not look photographed, so a number derived from them would be invented rather than measured.

What is the difference between Type M and Type N?

The direction of the wave. Type M peaks at the ends and dips in the middle; Type N is low at the ends and rises through the middle. Nothing else is stated as different - not size, not weight, not construction - although Type N is priced higher.

Is it really cotton?

100% cotton. That is a declaration rather than a test result, but unusually for this category the two sources agree.

How many fixings does it need?

Two, set well inside the ends of the batten. A wide bar carrying cord, beads and tassels will sag and rotate on a single central hook. No weight is published, so use wall plugs rather than picture hooks and mark both positions with a level before drilling.

Why does the zigzag look uneven when it arrives?

Because the cords hold a curl from packing and hang unevenly for the first day or two, which pulls the bead line out of shape. Run your fingers down through each section and let the weight of the beads settle them. The wave straightens itself once the cords do.
