Can an adhesive hook hold a plant in a kitchen window? Not a potted one that gets watered. The pot's weight roughly doubles the moment you water it, the load never comes off, and a sunny window over a sink is the hottest, dampest square foot of the room.
A dried bunch, a light air plant or an empty cachepot is a different question, and the honest way to settle it is a scale rather than a guess. Weigh the thing wet, then decide whether the wall, the glass or a stand is carrying it.

Can an adhesive hook hold a plant in a kitchen window?
Assume no for anything you pour water into, and check the number before you assume yes for anything else. It is not a weight-rated hook: the page describes the piece for keys, towels, hats and small kitchen tools, and tells you to avoid places that stay wet. A pot on a draining board sits inside every one of those exclusions.
Houseland's ceramic wall hook is 2.4 in wide and 2.8 in high, a glossy base with a curved chrome hook and adhesive no-drill mounting. Nothing on that page says a pot. Where a plant genuinely is light and permanently dry, the glass itself is the surface to aim for rather than the painted reveal beside it, for reasons that come down to what glue can wet.
How much does a watered plant really weigh?
Water is the whole story, and it arrives all at once. Water weighs about 62 lb per cubic foot, which works out near 2 lb per quart, and the standard advice for containers is to water until it runs out of the bottom of the pot so the lower two thirds of the mix is wetted through. That means the load peaks immediately after watering, not gradually.
Potting mix is built to soak: peat, coconut coir, vermiculite and perlite are chosen because they hold water and nutrients in a porous structure. Extension guidance even suggests judging dryness by weight, since a mix loses a definite amount of it as it dries, and by tapping the pot for a hollow sound. Put the plant on a kitchen scale, water it fully, and weigh it again once it stops dripping; the second number is the one the fixing has to live with every week for years.
| What to weigh | Why it counts |
|---|---|
| Pot, mix and plant, bone dry | The number people quote, and the smallest one |
| The same pot straight after watering | The real peak, reached in seconds |
| The cachepot or saucer around it | Ceramic outers often outweigh the plant |
| Any water left standing in the saucer | Should be emptied anyway, and adds load until it is |
Why does a hanging plant fail a mount that holds a towel?
Constant load is a different problem from occasional load. Creep is the slow deformation of a material under persistent stress that stays below its yield strength, and plastics and other polymers creep at ordinary room temperature. A tea towel loads a mount for a few minutes at a time; a pot loads it every second of every day, which is the exact condition creep needs.
Heat compounds it. Warmth softens a pressure-sensitive glue and cuts its shear holding, and a south-facing pane delivers that heat for hours in the middle of the day, then withdraws it overnight. The same glues lose tack when they get cold, so a winter window works the joint from the other direction. Nothing about that cycle shows up in the first week, which is why the failure arrives without warning in month 3.

What makes a kitchen window the worst spot for glue?
Condensation, and it lands precisely where the pad is. Water condenses on any surface colder than the dew point of the air touching it, and warm damp air makes that easy: air at 90 degrees F and 60% relative humidity has a dew point near 70 degrees F, so a pane at 70 or below runs wet. A kettle, a pan of pasta and a sink of hot washing-up all push a kitchen well past that.
Sealed double glazing hides part of the problem and creates another. The desiccant in the spacer keeps the cavity dry so the inner faces do not fog in cold weather, but conducted heat at a metal spacer still lets water or ice form along the bottom of the unit. That bottom strip is where a low mount sits, and repeated wetting is the single condition the product page tells you to avoid. Steam is also why a bright warm windowsill is a poor larder.
Adhesive vs screwed fixings for a window plant: which one?
Match the fixing to the weight and to the surface, not to how much you want to avoid a drill.
| Fixing | Best surface | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Adhesive pad | Clean dry glass or glazed tile, high surface energy | Light dry items, never a watered pot |
| Suction cup | Glass only, and re-seated often | Air plants and small dry props |
| Screw into the window frame or trim | Solid timber | Most single potted plants |
| Screw into a stud | Framing at 16 in on centre, sometimes 12 or 24 | Heavy pots and multiple hangers |
| Tension rod or a stand | Reveal, sill or floor | Renters, and anything you rearrange |
Glass reads as the odd one out but scores highest for glue: its surface energy is 83.4 mJ/m2, against 19 for PTFE, and a high-energy surface is wetted far more readily than a low-energy one. Glass is also flat, non-porous and easy to degrease, which is more than can be said for the painted reveal 2 in away from it.

Work through these 6 steps and the fixing chooses itself.
- Weigh it wet first. Water it fully, let it drain, then read the scale. Every later decision runs off that 1 number.
- Drop the outer pot. A glazed cachepot can weigh more than the plant, and swapping it for a plastic liner and a saucer removes load for nothing.
- Take the plant down to water it. Watering in place is what wets the wall, the pad and the sill, and Clemson's guidance is to water until it runs from the bottom and then empty the saucer.
- Fix into timber where you can. A window frame, its architrave or a stud at 16 in centres will carry a pot that no glue on plaster will.
- Keep glue off the wet zone. The bottom 2 in of a pane and anything within splash range of the sink stay wet for hours a day.
- Use the hook for what the page lists. Keys, hats, towels and small kitchen tools are the load the piece is described for, and it is worth planning that wall alongside the pans.
What I'd do
Put the pot on the sill and hang something dry on the wall. A sill takes the full wet weight with no fixing at all, and the window frame takes a screw for the one plant that genuinely has to hang. That split solves both jobs on the first try and leaves nothing quietly creeping above a sink.
The glue then goes where it is strongest: a dry tiled return, the side of a wall cabinet, the flat of a sealed door. Houseland ships 1 hook per selected variant in White, Blue, Black, Orange, Yellow or Red, so a row of 3 by the back door costs no more thought than 1, and the rest of the kitchen and home range is built around the same dry, smooth surfaces.
