Whether a bathroom sconce near a shower is safe depends on one measurement: the horizontal distance from the edge of the bath or shower tray. Bathrooms are divided into zones by that distance, and each zone sets a minimum ingress protection rating for anything electrical inside it.
The short version is that a decorative wall light with no stated ingress rating belongs outside 24 in from the shower opening and above 88 in from the floor is not a workaround — height alone does not move a fixture out of a zone. Position does.
Houseland is explicit about this for its globe fixture: rated for indoor use on dry walls, which is the vanity wall set back from the water and nothing closer.
Is a bathroom sconce near a shower safe in any zone?
Only if its ingress rating matches the zone it sits in, and most decorative fixtures have no rating at all.
| Zone | Where it is | Minimum rating | Decorative fixture? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zone 0 | Inside the bath or shower tray | IPX7, low voltage | Never |
| Zone 1 | Above the bath or tray, to 88 in high | IPX4 minimum | Never |
| Zone 2 | Within 24 in of zone 1, to 88 in high | IPX4 minimum | Never |
| Outside the zones | Beyond 24 in horizontally | No ingress requirement | Yes, if the wall stays dry |
The numbers vary between jurisdictions and the structure does not. Everywhere uses the same idea: concentric regions around the water, each with a lower requirement than the last, measured horizontally rather than by line of sight. Local wiring rules are the authority, and an electrician working in your area will know which edition applies.
Two practical points follow. A fixture sold with no IP figure on the box is an unrated fixture and belongs outside the zones entirely. And a rating is not a marketing claim to interpret generously — IPX4 means splashing from any direction, not immersion, and nothing about it covers steam over years.

Does height take a fixture out of a zone?
Only above the height where the zone ends, and by then the fixture is usually too high to be useful.
Zones 1 and 2 are commonly defined up to about 88 in from the floor. Above that line the ingress requirement drops away in most rules. That sounds like a workaround and rarely is one, because a wall light mounted above 88 in throws light down from close to the ceiling and does exactly what a ceiling fitting does, which is the opposite of why anyone wants a wall light at a mirror.
The useful conclusion is that height and position are not interchangeable. Moving a fixture 24 in sideways takes it out of the zone and keeps it at face height. Moving it 24 in upward does neither.
Small rooms are where this bites. In a cloakroom or an ensuite under 5 ft wide, almost every wall surface may fall inside a zone, and the honest answer is a rated fixture rather than a decorative one placed carefully.
How do I check whether my wall is inside a zone?
Measure horizontally from the water, at floor level, and mark it on the wall before choosing anything.
- Find the outer edge of the bath rim or shower tray and drop a plumb line from it to the floor.
- Measure 24 in horizontally outward from that line and mark it on the wall in pencil.
- Repeat around every side of the water, including the open side of a walk-in shower where there is no screen.
- Treat the whole marked region as off limits for any fixture without a stated ingress rating, at every height up to 88 in.
- Check the door swing and the basin position afterwards, because the zone boundary often lands awkwardly close to where a mirror already is.
The walk-in shower case catches people. With no screen, the zone extends from the shower head outward in every direction with nothing to stop it, so a wall that looks a long way from the water in a photograph can be inside the boundary in the room.
Write the measurement on the wall itself, not on a notepad. A pencil line at the 24 in boundary survives the whole project and settles every later argument about whether a mirror, a shaver socket or a towel rail is inside or outside it. It wipes off in seconds when the room is finished.

What about steam rather than splashing?
Steam is a slower problem than splashing and it is the one that actually shortens the life of a fixture on a dry wall.
Ingress ratings describe water arriving as drops or jets. They say nothing about humid air cycling from cold to warm twice a day for a decade. That cycle is what lifts paint at the edges of a metal fitting, dulls a matte finish, and eventually corrodes an unsealed fixing behind a backplate.
Ventilation does more about this than fixture choice. An extract fan that runs for 15 minutes after the shower stops removes most of the moisture before it condenses on anything, and it protects the paint, the mirror and the light equally. In a bathroom with no fan and no openable window, expect any wall fixture to age faster regardless of what it is made of.
Materials matter at the margin. Painted iron with a rubberwood cap, as on the Houseland globe fixture, does well on a dry vanity wall in a ventilated room and is not intended for a wall that is regularly wet. Wiping the fixture dry occasionally does more for it than any specification on the box.
One detail worth building into a refurbishment rather than retrofitting: put the fan on the same switch as the light, with a run-on timer. A fan the household has to remember to turn on is a fan that runs perhaps a third of the time, and the third it misses is usually the long shower on a cold morning that produces the most condensation. Wiring it to the light costs almost nothing at first fix and removes the decision entirely.

Mark the 24 in boundary on the wall in pencil before shopping, and buy for the zone the fixture will actually occupy.
On a vanity wall outside the zones, a decorative fixture rated for indoor use on dry walls is entirely appropriate, and the placement that makes it useful — a matched pair either side of the mirror at face height — is covered in whether textured wall art can go in a bathroom safely, which works through the same humidity question for decorative pieces.
Inside a zone, buy a rated fixture and have it installed by an electrician who works to your local wiring rules. There is no clever placement that makes an unrated light acceptable within 24 in of a shower, and this is one of the few areas of home decoration where the downside of getting it wrong is not aesthetic. For drilling into tile or masonry once the position is settled, the bit choices are in what drill bit you need for concrete and brick walls.
