A downstairs cloakroom with a window, yes. A family shower room, no. How to hang pine wood wall shelves in a damp room is less about the fixing than about whether the timber should be there at all.
Pine takes on and gives off moisture with the air around it, and repeated cycles are what cup a board and lift a lacquer at the edges.

How to hang pine wood wall shelves where humidity varies
Two rules do most of the work.
Let the timber acclimatise. Leave the modules in the room for a couple of days before hanging them, so they reach the humidity they will live in. Timber fitted straight from a cold van moves after installation.
Do not fix anything rigidly across the grain. Keyhole hangers are ideal here because the piece hangs rather than being clamped, so a small amount of movement does no harm.
Beyond that it is about the room, and the honest test is the mirror: if it stays fogged for twenty minutes after a shower, the air is holding more moisture than a lacquered pine shelf should be asked to live in.
What humidity actually does to lacquered pine
Cupping. A board takes up moisture unevenly — the exposed face faster than the sealed one — and curls slightly across its width. On a shallow shelf it shows as a piece that no longer sits flat against the wall.
Edge lift. Lacquer is thinnest at cut edges, so that is where moisture gets under it first. A hairline raised edge is the early warning.
Staining. Standing water leaves a mark that dries darker and does not wipe off.
Loosening. Glue lines in a jointed module soften slowly under repeated cycles.
None of these happens in one steamy shower. All of them happen over a year of them.
Board thickness affects how fast all of this happens. The Houseland modules use 0.6 in board, which is substantial enough to resist quick movement but still timber — thicker stock moves more slowly rather than not at all, and no thickness makes pine suitable for a room that is wet twice a day.

The middle row is the judgement call, and the extractor is what decides it. A fan that runs fifteen minutes after use changes the room's behaviour completely.

- On an internal wall rather than an external one. External walls run colder and condense first.
- As far from the shower or bath as the room allows, and never on the same wall.
- Not opposite the shower door, since steam rolls out and lands on the facing wall.
- High rather than low, because the coldest surfaces are usually low on outside walls.
- Not directly above a basin, which is a splash zone even in a room with no shower.
And run the extractor after use rather than switching it off with the light. That single habit does more for anything in the room than every placement rule above.

Fixings that survive a damp room
Use corrosion-resistant screws and anchors: stainless or properly plated. Ordinary steel rusts in damp air and bleeds a brown stain down the paint, which is a more visible problem than anything that happens to the shelf.
That applies to the hanger screws as much as the wall fixings, since a rusting screw head marks the timber around it.
Tiled walls need a different approach again: drill through a grout line where possible, at low speed with the hammer off, using a tile bit rather than a masonry one.

Caring for pine in a room that gets damp
Wipe up water immediately. A splash dried within a minute does nothing; a splash left to sit is what marks a lacquered surface.
Do not clean with a wet cloth as a routine. Damp dusting adds moisture to a room already carrying too much, and it drives water into the edges where the lacquer is thinnest.
Keep nothing wet standing on the shelf. A dripping bottle, a wet glass, a plant pot without a saucer — all of them mark timber.
And check the edges every few months. Edge lift is the first sign and the point at which moving the piece is still enough.
Ventilation habits matter more than any care routine. A bathroom door left open after use, or a window cracked for ten minutes, drops the humidity faster than an extractor running with the door shut. Where a shelf is borderline, that habit is often the difference between fine and not.

Materials that belong in a bathroom instead
Glazed ceramic, glass, powder-coated or stainless metal, marine ply and solid teak all live in bathrooms without complaint.
Teak in particular is the traditional answer for a reason: it is oily enough to shrug off humidity that would move most timbers.
Where the look of pine is the point, the honest compromise is to keep the pine somewhere else and choose a different material for the wet room. A shelf that is slowly degrading never looks as good as one that belongs there.

If pine really is the look you want in a wet room, an oiled finish handles moisture better than a lacquered one — not because it seals more, but because it can be topped up. Pine in a cloakroom with a window, on an internal wall, with stainless fixings and nothing wet ever standing on it.
Nothing in a shower room, however good the extractor. The cycles are relentless and the damage is cumulative rather than dramatic.
And in a bathroom that is borderline, hang one module first and look at its edges after three months. That is a cheap experiment, and it answers the question for your room better than any general rule can.
