Identify your apartment wall type before drilling by reading a cut edge, not the paint: switch off the breaker, pull one switch plate, and look at what the box sits in. Paper on both faces of a chalky white core is gypsum board. A hard grey layer sitting on thin wood strips is lath and plaster. A face that blunts a pushpin and answers every knock with the same dead note is concrete or block.
Guessing wrong is not something filler fixes. A toggle needs a cavity behind the board to spring open in, a sleeve anchor needs solid masonry to grip, and plaster shatters around a bit that spins too fast. How do I identify my apartment wall type before drilling?
Run four checks in this order: the age of the building, the cut edge at a switch plate, a pushpin in a hidden spot, then a tap across the wall. None of them leaves a mark anyone could bill you for, and each rules out a whole class of wall.
- Date the building. Lath and plaster fell out of favour in the US, Canada and the UK between the 1930s and the 1950s as board took over, and by the late 1930s rock lath was already the usual residential method (Wikipedia on lath and plaster). A 1928 walk-up and a 2015 tower want different boxes of fixings before you touch either.
- Read the cut edge. Two screws release a switch plate, and the sawn edge around the box is the only free cross-section your wall will ever give you. Gypsum board shows a white core faced with paper on both sides, usually 1/2 in or 5/8 in thick (Wikipedia on drywall). Plaster shows stacked coats and no paper anywhere.
- Press a pushpin in where nobody looks. Behind the entry door, inside a closet, low down behind a radiator. Thumb pressure alone sinks a pin into gypsum board. On plaster or concrete the point skids sideways or blunts, and the head never reaches the paint.
- Tap along the wall at hip height. Board sounds hollow across a stud bay and goes solid every 16 or 24 in where a stud stands, since that is how framing is spaced in the US and Canada (Wikipedia on wall studs). - Sweep a magnet over the surface. A magnetic finder is pulled toward the nails and screws holding the skin on, while electronic finders read the change in dielectric constant behind the paint and are thrown by the metal mesh in later plaster walls (Wikipedia on stud finders). Two magnets stuck in a vertical line mean framing; magnets scattered with no pattern mean furring or lath.
Drywall vs plaster vs concrete: what does each one do under a pin?
The same four clues give three clearly different answers, and the pushpin separates them fastest. Find the column your wall keeps landing in rather than the one clue you liked.

The bottom row is where money gets wasted. A rotary drill only spins, so it polishes concrete instead of cutting it; the percussion in a hammer drill drives thousands of blows a minute so the carbide tip can pulverise the aggregate and the flutes can clear it (Wikipedia on hammer drills). What does the switch plate show that the paint hides?
Thickness, layer order and whether a cavity exists at all, which is the whole question a fixing depends on. Kill the breaker, drop the plate, and look at the edge with a phone torch before you touch anything inside.
- Total thickness of the skin. Board reads 1/2 in or 5/8 in in one clean slab. Traditional plaster reads thicker once you count the parts: wood lath about 1/4 in thick under a brown coat of roughly 1/2 in.
- What is behind the skin. Air and a stud edge means a cavity you can toggle into. Wood strips with hardened material squeezed through the gaps between them, spaced about 3/8 in apart, means keyed plaster.
- How the box is held. A plastic box with swing-out wings clamped to the board face is a cavity wall. A box bedded into a chase, with conduit disappearing into something solid, is masonry.
- Where the cable runs. Cable run alongside framing has to sit at least 1-1/4 in (32 mm) back from the edge where a screw could reach it, or be shielded by a steel plate at least 1/16 in (1.6 mm) thick (NEC 300.4(D)).
That last one is the reason to treat the vertical band above and below every outlet as occupied, and to move a planned hole sideways rather than argue with it. Put the plate back with the same two screws and you have learned everything a paid inspection would have told you.
Why does the tap test call a concrete apartment drywall?
Because most concrete buildings finish the slab with a board layer on furring, so the surface you knock on is gypsum and the thing that stops your bit sits a finger's width behind it. The hollow note is real. It is just an air gap, not a stud bay.
Two details separate the fake hollow from the genuine one. A furred wall sounds hollow more or less everywhere, and never resolves into that regular solid-hollow-solid rhythm at 16 or 24 in centres. And a pin that sinks in easily tells you only about the first 1/2 in of the wall, which is exactly the depth that a shelf screw passes straight through.
Block walls have their own signature. A standard US concrete block is nominally 16 in long and 8 in wide, laid with 3/8 in mortar joints, and blocks are cast with hollow cores (Wikipedia on concrete masonry units). So one hole lands in a solid web and holds a plug beautifully, while the hole 4 in along drops into a void and spins. Renovated pre-war apartments add the reverse trick: a skim of board fixed over the original plaster, giving you paper faces at the switch box and a rock-hard layer 1/2 in deeper in.

Drill one small test hole where the shelf will cover it, and let the bit answer the question the surface would not. The Before You Drill guide puts it plainly: a stud finder, a tap or an old patched hole can each give one clue while the actual fastener path tells a different story, so one clue is never confirmation (how to tell wall type before drilling).
- Use the smallest bit you own, hammer off, hand pressure only, and go in slowly at the exact spot a hanger will hide.
- Count what happens by depth. A clean break into empty space after roughly 1/2 in is board over a cavity. Steady resistance the whole way is plaster on masonry or solid concrete. Grinding that stalls the bit within 1/8 in means you need carbide and percussion, not more pressure.
- Watch the dust. Fine white powder is gypsum or plaster; grey grit is masonry; wood shavings mean you found lath or a stud, which is good news for a screw.
- Stop entirely if the wall is wet, stained, soft, crumbling, bulging or patched over and over again. Those are the conditions the same guide lists as reasons to bring in the building manager rather than a longer screw.
A hole the width of a pencil lead costs one dab of filler. A wall opened up by the wrong anchor costs a deposit, and in a rental it costs the argument as well.

What I'd do
Spend ten minutes on the switch plate, the pin and the tap, then buy fixings, in that order and never the other way round. The wall names itself long before a drill has to.
Once the wall has a name the rest follows quickly. Board on a cavity takes a toggle or a self-drilling anchor placed away from that band above the outlets. Board on furring over concrete wants the screw to reach the furring strip or the slab, which means carbide. Plaster wants a pilot hole, a slow speed and, where possible, the stud behind it. Concrete and block want a masonry bit and a plug sized to the bit, not to the screw.
Only then does the hardware in the box matter.
