Knotwork with the wall showing through it, in a frame

Framed textile usually means fabric mounted on a board: a flat backing, a flat result. This is the opposite. Cord is knotted straight across the opening of a stained wood frame with nothing behind it, so the wall shows through the gaps in the pattern and the knots cast shadows onto it. Change the wall color and the piece changes with it.

Each panel is 23 x 32 cm - small, deliberately. It weighs 300 to 340 g depending on how dense the knotting is, and because it has a rigid frame it hangs level on one hook or stands on a shelf without a stand.

Thirteen knot patterns are offered under one listing, in cream, sage, dark green, rust, coral, mustard and taupe. They are the same frame and the same size; only the knotwork and the color change. It is framed textile art at a scale you buy two or three of rather than one.

What you get

  • One framed panel, in the style number you pick.
  • A stained wood frame, mitred at the corners, in a light oak tone on the first four styles and a darker walnut on the rest.
  • Open knotwork with no backing. There is no board, no card and no glass - the wall is the background.
  • Cotton cord,.
  • No fixings. None included, and at 300-340 g none elaborate is needed.

Dimensions, and the number that disagrees

We publish the size on four of its thirteen option drawings, all agreeing, and the weight on the same four. Its title gives a different figure, which is worth knowing.

Frame size 23 cm / 9.06 in wide by 32 cm / 12.6 in tall, printed on the Style-01 to Style-04 drawings
The title says otherwise 21 x 30 cm. That is most likely the opening rather than the outside of the frame; we publish the drawing's 23 x 32 cm and flag the difference.
Weight 340 g (Style-01), 320 g (Style-02), 300 g (Style-03), 340 g (Style-04). The other nine styles carry no weight figure; the range is the guide.
Styles with a published size Four of thirteen. The remaining nine are visibly the same frame at the same proportion, but nobody has printed a figure on them.
Wall needed, one panel About 33 x 42 cm
Wall needed, three in a row About 95 cm wide with a 12 cm gap between frames - the arrangement we photograph above a bed
Depth The frame is a thin moulding and the knotwork sits within it, so the piece is shallow.

How to hang it, and how to look after it

One small hook or nail. At 300-340 g in a rigid frame, it hangs level by itself and needs nothing structural. No hanging fitting is described, so check the back when it arrives.

It also stands. We photograph it leaning on a sideboard and propped on a table beside a coffee cup, and a frame this size with this little depth sits happily against a wall on a shelf. That is a genuine second use, not a stretch.

Hang it against a plain wall. The whole point is the wall showing through the knots - against wallpaper or a busy surface the pattern disappears. Cream knotwork on a white wall reads as shadow; the same panel on a deep green or clay wall reads as a silhouette. Both work; a patterned wall does not.

We give unusually complete care instructions, and they are worth repeating:

  • Do not pull on the cord. Hard pulling loosens knots and deforms the pattern, and a knot that has moved does not go back.
  • Dust with a soft brush. Sweep gently rather than wiping - a cloth catches on knotwork.
  • Never wash or soak it. We warn of shrinkage, fading and mold. Cotton knotted under tension in a fixed frame has nowhere to go if it shrinks.
  • Keep it out of damp and direct sun. Damp risks mold in the cord and deformation in the frame; sun fades the dyed styles.
  • Spot clean only, with mild detergent, dabbed lightly and air dried away from sunlight.

Picking a style

For a neutral room, Styles 01, 02, 06, 10, 12 or 13 - cream and taupe knotwork on a wood frame. These are the ones that read as texture rather than as color, and the ones that group well with each other.

For green, Styles 03, 04, 09 and 11. Styles 03 and 04 pair a fresh sage with a light oak frame; 09 is a much darker forest green on walnut, which is the strongest of the four from a distance.

For warm color, Styles 07, 08 and 11. 07 is a soft coral, 08 a strong rust orange - the boldest thing in this page - and 11 is mustard with white beads worked into the knots, the only style with beads on it.

If you are buying three, our own grouping is two neutrals and one green, hung in a row with equal gaps. Mixing three colors tends to fight; mixing three patterns in one color family does not.

Three panels hung in a row above a bed

Where this actually earns its place

In a row, above a bed or a sideboard. At 23 cm wide a single panel is a detail; three in a row across 95 cm is a composition, and because they share a frame and a size they line up without any of the fiddling a mixed gallery wall needs.

Second, on a shelf or a mantel, leaning. It is one of very few pieces in this collection that works standing up, and a 32 cm panel among books and pots does something a framed photograph does not - it has depth and no reflection.

Third, a small wall that defeats larger art: beside a door, in an alcove, on the return wall of a hallway. As boho wall decor it is the least demanding option here - one hook, no weight worth worrying about, and nothing that needs levelling twice.

Honest limits

  • It is small. 23 x 32 cm. On a large wall a single panel looks like a postcard. Buy two or three.
  • We publish the drawing figure and suspect the title describes the opening.
  • Only four of thirteen styles are dimensioned. The other nine are the same frame to the eye, but nobody has printed a figure on them.
  • No percentage exists.
  • No backing means no protection. Open knotwork collects dust in the pattern and cannot be wiped with a cloth - a soft brush is the only safe tool, and we say so.
  • It cannot be washed. Knotted cotton held under tension in a fixed frame will shrink if soaked, and there is nowhere for it to go. Our warning is not boilerplate here.
  • No hanging fitting is described, and no depth figure is published.

Before you buy

How big is it?

23 cm / 9.06 in wide by 32 cm / 12.6 in tall, weighing 300 to 340 g. 21 x 30 cm - likely the frame opening, not the outer size. Allow about 33 x 42 cm of wall for one panel.

Is there anything behind the knotwork?

No. There is no board, no card and no glass - the cord is knotted across an open frame and your wall is the background. That is why the same panel looks different on a white wall and on a dark one.

Can it stand on a shelf instead?

Yes. We photograph it leaning on a sideboard and propped on a table. A rigid frame at 32 cm tall with very little depth stands against a wall without a stand.

How do I clean it?

Sweep it gently with a soft-bristled brush. Do not wipe it with a cloth, which catches on the knots, and never wash or soak it - we warn of shrinkage, fading and mold, and knotted cotton in a fixed frame has nowhere to shrink to. For a stain, dab lightly with mild detergent and let it air dry out of the sun.

Do all thirteen styles cost the same?

Twelve of them do. Style-13 is priced slightly higher, though it's the same frame at the same size.

Which styles work together?

Ones that share a color family. Our own grouping is two neutrals and one green, hung in a row with equal gaps. Three different patterns in cream will always look deliberate; three different colors usually do not.

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers about the materials, care and everyday use — no fine print.

What's the best macrame wall hanging for a bedroom?

Yes. It is photographed in a bedroom above a bed as a set of three. Our diagrams publish 23 cm / 9.06 in wide by 32 cm / 12.6 in high, with per-style weights of 300 g, 320 g and 340 g. Hung as a trio above a bed the three together span about half the headboard.

What can I hang above my bed instead of a headboard?

It is photographed in a bedroom above a bed as a set of three and in a console or sideboard, propped rather than hung. Our diagrams publish 23 cm / 9.06 in wide by 32 cm / 12.6 in high, with per-style weights of 300 g, 320 g and 340 g. Hung as a trio above a bed the three together span about half the headboard. No fiber content is claimed on this page.

What's a good housewarming gift under 100 dollars?

It arrives flat or rolled and needs one hook, so it is a gift that does not ask the recipient to assemble anything. There is a choice of option to make, so check what they would pick.

How do I fill a narrow wall next to a door?

The published measurement is 21 x 30 cm. Our diagrams publish 23 cm / 9.06 in wide by 32 cm / 12.6 in high, with per-style weights of 300 g, 320 g and 340 g. Hung as a trio above a bed the three together span about half the headboard. Measure the wall first: the number that matters is the gap you are filling, not the piece. Option values are Style-01 to Style-13 with no color or pattern word.

What decor is safe to hang above a crib?

Hang it above the reach line and out of arm's reach of a cot. This piece carries loose wooden beads on cords, which is the reason to hang it high rather than the fiber. Prop it on a console and a desk rather than hanging it, and hang three together as a gallery wall, which is the strongest set proposition in either batch.

what's the difference between macrame and woven wall hangings?

Macrame is tied by hand and a woven tapestry is made on a loom. This piece is knotted work. Rectangular wood frame, mitred and stained.

Does macrame wall art collect dust?

Dust with a soft brush or a vacuum on its lowest setting. Prop it on a console and a desk rather than hanging it, and hang three together as a gallery wall, which is the strongest set proposition in either batch.

Can a macrame wall hanging be used as table decor?

It hangs from a single cord loop, so it works on a backdrop frame or a hired stand as easily as on a wall. Our diagrams publish 23 cm / 9.06 in wide by 32 cm / 12.6 in high, with per-style weights of 300 g, 320 g and 340 g. Hung as a trio above a bed the three together span about half the headboard. Option values are Style-01 to Style-13 with no color or pattern word.

does cotton wall art fade in sunlight?

No light fastness rating is published. Direct sun will lift color out of any dyed cord in time, so a wall that does not take midday sun is the safer place for it. Weights are published per style, which almost nothing else here manages.

how do I pick a wall art color for a neutral room?

Match the cord to the softest thing in the room rather than to the paint, and the piece will read as part of the room instead of an object stuck on it.

What's the best small wall art under 100 dollars?

What is fixed is what ships: 13 options and no hardware. Our diagrams publish 23 cm / 9.06 in wide by 32 cm / 12.6 in high, with per-style weights of 300 g, 320 g and 340 g.

is macrame safe around babies and pets?

Hanging cord is inviting to a cat. Hang it clear of anything a cat can climb, and expect a low fringe to be played with if it is within reach. Prop it on a console and a desk rather than hanging it, and hang three together as a gallery wall, which is the strongest set proposition in either batch.

How do I hang wall art on drywall without hitting a stud?

A single hook into drywall is usually enough for a cord and wood piece this size, and a stud is better if you have one behind the spot you want.

What's the return policy on handmade wall decor?

It ships from our warehouse and the delivery estimate shown at checkout is the one to trust. Hung as a trio above a bed the three together span about half the headboard.

How many options does this come in?

13. It is photographed in a bedroom above a bed as a set of three.

Which option is the most neutral?

The cream or undyed option where there is one. It is photographed in a console or sideboard, propped rather than hung.

Is there anything about this piece I should know first?

Option values are Style-01 to Style-13 with no color or pattern word.

What is the wood?

A stained panel or dowel. Prop it on a console and a desk rather than hanging it, and hang three together as a gallery wall, which is the strongest set proposition in either batch.

Does it come with a hook or a nail?

No. Weights are published per style, which almost nothing else here manages.

Will it shed?

Cut cord ends shed a little at first and settle after a week or two. Vacuum the floor under it once and it stops being noticeable. The published measurement is 21 x 30 cm.

Will it work in a rental?

Yes, if you hang it on an adhesive hook rather than a nail. It has one hanging point, so there is only one mark to avoid making.

How far from the ceiling should I hang it?

Hang the top edge at eye level or a little above, then step back. On a piece that drops, the bottom edge matters more than the top: leave a hand's width between it and whatever sits underneath. Hung as a trio above a bed the three together span about half the headboard.

Does it work with other art on the same wall?

It reads as texture rather than as a picture, so it sits beside framed prints without competing. Give it its own column of wall rather than a slot in a grid. It is photographed in a bedroom above a bed as a set of three.

What happens if it gets damp?

Cord holds damp and dries slowly. Keep it off a bathroom wall and away from a kettle or a shower door. It is photographed in a console or sideboard, propped rather than hung.

How is this different from a printed tapestry?

A printed tapestry is one flat piece of fabric with an image on it. This is built from cord and wood, so it has real depth and casts its own shadow. No fiber content is claimed on this page.

Will it suit a small room?

Read the proportion in the lifestyle photographs rather than the word in the title. A piece that fills a headboard in a large bedroom will crowd a small one.

Is the color dyed all the way through?

The cord is dyed rather than printed, so the color runs through the strand. No light fastness figure is published, so treat strong sun as a risk. Option values are Style-01 to Style-13 with no color or pattern word.

Is it safe over a radiator?

Keep it off a wall directly above a radiator or a heater. Prop it on a console and a desk rather than hanging it, and hang three together as a gallery wall, which is the strongest set proposition in either batch.

Will it arrive creased?

Anything shipped folded arrives with fold lines. Cord drops out under its own weight in a few days on the wall; do not iron it. Weights are published per style, which almost nothing else here manages.

Is it easy to post on to someone else?

Yes. It is light and it folds, so it goes in a padded envelope or a small box without a frame to protect. The published measurement is 21 x 30 cm.

Can it be hung outdoors for a day?

For a dry day under cover, yes. It is not rated for weather and damp cord takes a long time to dry, so it should not be left out overnight.

How much wall does it actually cover?

Judge it from the lifestyle photographs against the furniture, not from the studio shot on a plain ground, which flattens the scale. Hung as a trio above a bed the three together span about half the headboard.

What is the one thing worth knowing before ordering?

The frame changes what the product is for. Prop it on a console and a desk rather than hanging it, and hang three together as a gallery wall, which is the strongest set proposition in either batch. It is photographed in a console or sideboard, propped rather than hung.

Can I hang it from a picture rail?

Yes. It hangs from one cord loop, so a rail hook carries it as well as a wall hook does, and it leaves the wall untouched. No fiber content is claimed on this page.

How do I store it if I take it down?

Roll it rather than fold it, cord outward, and keep it dry. A fold line in cord takes weeks to drop out; a roll leaves none.

Do not wipe it with a cloth, which catches on the knots, and never wash or soak it - we warn of shrinkage, fading and mold, and knotted cotton in a fixed frame has nowhere to shrink to. For a stain, dab lightly with mild detergent and let it air dry out of the sun.
