The color fades down the cord, not across it

Most two-tone wall hangings split the color left to right: a block of green beside a block of cream, with a vertical line where they meet. This one runs the gradient the other way. Each strand starts pale at the board and deepens as it falls, so the color change follows the curve of the swag rather than cutting across it.

The result is that the piece reads as light at the top and saturated at the bottom, with the deepest color pooling where the loops hang lowest. It is 100 cm wide and 70 cm tall, hung from a curved wooden board rather than a straight bar, with the cord swagged below it in two crossing loops.

There is no knotwork, no fringe and no hem - every strand runs from the board, around a loop, and back to the board. We declare 100% cotton rope.

What you get

  • One hanging. Our package line reads "one wall hanging".
  • A curved wooden board, 100 cm long, stained mid-brown, cut with a gentle arc rather than left square.
  • Two crossing loops of cord, swagged below the board and crossing off-center.
  • A vertical gradient on every strand - pale at the board, deepening toward the bottom of the curve.
  • No loose ends. Nothing to comb, no fringe and no hem.
  • No fixings. None included or described.

Dimensions, and what they mean on your wall

We publish one diagram and it covers every colorway. Everything under the first two rows is our arithmetic.

Width 100 cm, the length of the board
Height 70 cm, board top to the lowest point of the swag
Wall needed About 120 x 95 cm to leave it air at the sides and below the curve
Above a sideboard or console A 120-150 cm sideboard takes this centered with clear wall either side.
Above a bed Matches a double headboard at about 140 cm. Over a king it reads as a centered panel rather than filling the width.
Above a three-seat sofa A sofa is 200-220 cm; at 100 cm this covers about half, which works centered but will not fill the wall.
Where the lowest point sits Not in the middle. The two loops cross off-center, so the deepest drop is toward one side - measure clearance from that side.
Weight A meter of board plus this much cord is not a picture-hook object.

Our size diagram: 100 cm wide by 70 cm tall

How to hang it

Two fixings, well inside the ends of the board. A meter of rigid timber on one central hook rotates, and on a board cut to a curve that shows immediately. No weight is published, so use wall plugs.

Level the board, not the cord. The loops hang at different depths by design, so judging by eye from the swags will send you wrong. Put a level on the two mounting points and ignore what is below them.

Decide the orientation before you drill. The loops cross off-center, which means the piece has a heavier side. Hold it up and look from where you usually stand; the deeper side generally wants to face into the room rather than toward a corner.

There is nothing to comb. Both ends of every strand are fixed to the board, so the piece arrives in its finished shape and keeps it. If a loop has twisted in transit, run a hand along it to lay the strands flat - the gradient will only read correctly when they sit parallel.

Picking a colorway

Blue is the most dramatic: near-white at the board through a mid blue to a deep navy at the lowest point. It is the only colorway with a true dark in it, and the one that holds a large pale wall on its own.

Khaki grades from cream through sand to a warm tan. The quietest of the four and the one that belongs with timber, rattan and clay - we photograph it above a wooden sideboard for that reason.

Green runs cream to a soft sage. Cooler than the khaki, warmer than the gray, and the safest of the four in a room that already has a color scheme.

Gray grades cream to charcoal. It is the neutral with contrast - useful where blue would be too much color but khaki would disappear into the wall.

Where this actually earns its place

Above a sideboard or a console. A meter-wide curve over a meter-and-a-half of furniture is the proportion we photograph, and the arc of the board does something a straight bar cannot: it breaks the horizontal line of the surface below rather than repeating it.

Second, above a double bed. At 100 cm it matches a double headboard, and because the gradient is deepest at the bottom the weight of the color sits low, closer to the pillows - which reads better over a bed than a piece that is darkest at the top.

Third, a large blank wall where a gallery arrangement would be too busy. As boho wall decor this is one gesture, two fixings, and 120 cm of wall resolved - and the gradient gives it enough interest to survive being the only thing there.

Honest limits

  • No weight is published, on a piece with a meter of rigid board. Two fixings and rated wall plugs.
  • Check the back of the board on arrival.
  • The piece is asymmetric and cannot be reversed. The loops cross off-center, so you commit to a direction when you drill.
  • We say the size is "as the picture show." The 100 x 70 cm figure comes from its diagram rather than from a stated specification, and no tolerance is published.
  • "Macrame" in our title is wrong. There is no knotwork here - cord looped over a shaped board and nothing else.
  • The gradient means dye, and dye fades. No colorfastness statement is published. On a sunlit wall the deep end of the gradient will lift over years faster than the pale end.
  • No care instructions. Dust only.

Before you buy

How big is it?

100 cm wide and 70 cm tall, from our diagram - one drawing covers all four colorways. Allow about 120 x 95 cm of wall.

How many fixings does it need?

Two, well inside the ends of the board. A meter of rigid timber on one central hook rotates, and on a curved board that is obvious immediately. No weight is published, so use wall plugs rather than picture hooks.

Which way does the color run?

Down each strand, not across the piece. Every cord starts pale at the board and deepens toward the bottom of the swag, so the darkest color pools where the loops hang lowest.

Does the cord fray?

No. Every strand runs from the board, around a loop and back to the board, so both ends are fixed. There is no fringe, no hem and nothing to comb.

Which way round does it hang?

Your choice, but decide before you drill. The two loops cross off-center, so the piece has a deeper side - hold it up and look from where you usually stand. The deeper side generally wants to face into the room.

Is it cotton?

100% cotton rope. That is a declaration rather than a test result, but the two sources agree.

Detailed questions and answers

Will it fill the wall above my sofa?

About half of it. A three-seat sofa is 200 to 220 cm and this is 100 cm, so it works centered but will not fill the wall. Above a sideboard or a double headboard the proportion is much better.

How do I get it level?

Put the level on the board's two mounting points. The loops hang at different depths by design, so judging by eye from the swags will send you wrong.

Will the gradient fade?

No colorfastness statement is published. A gradient means dye, and on a sunlit wall the deep end of the gradient will lift faster than the pale end over years.

How many pieces come in an order?

One. Our package line reads 'one wall hanging'.

Is it macrame?

No, despite our title. There is no knotwork - cord looped over a shaped board and nothing else.

Is the board straight or curved?

Curved. It is cut with a gentle arc along its lower edge rather than left square, which is what makes the top of the piece move before the cord does.

Where is the lowest point?

Not in the middle. The two loops cross off-center so the deepest drop sits toward one side - measure clearance below from that side.

How do I clean it?

Dust it. No care instruction is published, and cotton cord fixed in a shape is not something to wash.

Is any hardware included?

No. Nothing is included, and no hanging fitting is described or visible in any photograph - check the back of the board on arrival.

Which colorway has the most contrast?

Blue. It runs near-white at the board through mid blue to deep navy at the hem, and it is the only colorway with a true dark in it.

Which is the quietest?

Khaki - cream through sand to a warm tan. It belongs with timber, rattan and clay, and it is the one we photograph above a wooden sideboard.

Does it come in other sizes?

No. One size, 100 x 70 cm, across all four colorways.

Can I hang it above a bed?

Yes, and the proportion suits a double. At 100 cm it matches a 140 cm headboard, and because the gradient is deepest at the bottom the weight of color sits low, near the pillows.

What happens if a loop twists in transit?

Run a hand along it to lay the strands flat again. The gradient only reads correctly when the cords sit parallel, so it is worth a minute on arrival.

Is there a tolerance on the size?

None is published. Our description gives the size only as 'as the picture show', so the 100 x 70 cm figure comes from its diagram.

Can it go in a bathroom?

We would not. No moisture guidance is published and cotton cord in a humid room holds damp. Treat it as a dry-room piece.
