Look for 5 things: no glass anywhere on it, a painted metal or wood shade that stays under 43°C (109°F) in use, a warm bulb at 2700K or lower on a dimmer, a switch you can reach one-handed from the feeding chair, and a mounting spot at least 24 in (61 cm) from the crib edge. A nursery wall lamp that clears all 5 is safe to leave on through a 3am feed and still suits the room when the crib turns into a bed.
The numbers below come from CENELEC Guide 29 on hot surfaces, a 2018 melatonin study on children, the WHO growth tables and a children's hospital crib checklist, set against the published spec of the Houseland bear sconce: 8.3 in (21 cm) tall, a painted iron dome on a rubberwood backplate, an E27 socket and a rotary knob on the body.

Which 5 Things Decide a Nursery Wall Lamp?
Five criteria decide it, and each one has a number you can check on the listing before you pay. Style comes last, because a bear, a cloud or a plain dome all pass or fail on the same 5 rows.
| Criterion | Number to look for | Why it matters in a baby room |
|---|---|---|
| Shade material | 0 glass parts: painted metal, wood or fabric only | A knocked glass diffuser breaks over the crib zone, and a dropped one breaks on the floor a crawler uses |
| Surface temperature | Under 43°C (109°F) on the shade after 1 hour lit with the bulb you will use | 43°C is the burn threshold CENELEC Guide 29 gives for skin contact of 8 hours or longer, its strictest figure |
| Bulb | 2700K or lower, dimmable, E26 or E27 base so you choose the bulb | In a 2018 study, 3000K light suppressed less of children's melatonin than 6200K did, and the authors still warned that bright warm light suppresses it too |
| Switch | On the lamp body, or a wall switch by the door; a dimmer only with a dimmable LED | A switch reached from the chair keeps the overhead light off during a feed |
| Position | At least 24 in (61 cm) from the crib edge; bottom of the shade above 39.4 in (100 cm) from the floor | Texas Children's Hospital keeps wall lamps 2 ft from the crib; 100 cm is the arm's reach for a child under 2 in CENELEC Guide 29 |
Hardwired or plug-in is a sixth question, and it is about your wall rather than the baby. A hardwired sconce has no cord to pull and needs a wall box; a plug-in has a cord that has to run somewhere a toddler cannot reach. The wall sconce vs floor lamp for a kids room piece works through the cord problem in detail.
Why No Glass, and How Hot Can the Shade Get?
A painted metal or wood shade removes the only part of a wall light that shatters, and with an LED bulb it stays well below the temperature that marks skin. Glass diffusers are common on adult sconces because they soften a bare bulb; in a nursery the same job is done by a solid dome that hides the bulb from the mattress.
The touch-safety numbers come from CENELEC Guide 29, Table A.1: a coated metal surface reaches its burn threshold at 51°C (124°F) for 1 minute of contact, 48°C (118°F) for 10 minutes, and 43°C (109°F) for 8 hours or longer. The same guide assigns children under 2 a contact period of 15 seconds in its Table 2, against 0.5 to 1 second for an adult, because a baby does not pull a hand back from something hot. The guide also notes that its burn thresholds are surface temperatures, not skin temperatures, and that pain arrives lower than injury does.
The bulb sets the temperature, not the shade. Wikipedia's LED lamp entry puts incandescent bulbs at 10 to 17 lumens per watt, and the best LED lamps above 200 lumens per watt, converting more than half their input into light rather than heat. A 60 W incandescent in a closed dome is a small oven; an 8 W LED giving the same light is not. Houseland's bear sconce is painted iron with two ball ears on a rubberwood mount, and its product page says the shade stays cool to the touch with a warm-white LED, which is the pairing the listing recommends.
The check: fit the bulb you will actually use, run the lamp for 1 hour, then hold the back of your hand flat on the top of the shade for 10 seconds. If you can hold it for the full 10 seconds without wanting to let go, the surface is under the 1-minute threshold with margin. If you flinch, swap the bulb for a lower wattage before the lamp goes anywhere near a crib.

What Bulb Colour Temperature Suits a Night Feed?
2700K or lower, dimmed as far as it will go, is the setting for a night feed. On the colour temperature scale, 2700K is where "soft white" LED and compact fluorescent lamps sit, 3000K is "warm white", and a candle flame or sunset is about 1850K. The lower the number, the less blue the light carries.
The reason is melatonin. A 2018 study in Physiological Reports by Lee and colleagues exposed 22 children, average age 8.9 years, and 20 adults to about 300 lux of LED ceiling light at either 3000K or 6200K from 7pm. The children's melatonin fell 58.1% under the 3000K light and 81.2% under the 6200K light, while the adults lost 30.4% under both. Two caveats matter for a nursery: the children were school age, not infants, and the authors warn that even low colour temperature light suppresses melatonin when it is bright, citing earlier work that room light under 100 lux does it too. So the bulb has to be warm and dim, not just warm.
A socket you can choose the bulb for is the practical version of this rule. Houseland's bear sconce takes one E27 bulb, standard US E26 LED bulbs screw into the same socket, and no bulb ships in the box, so you pick the Kelvin and the dimming behaviour yourself. The warm light bulb for a nursery sconce, by Kelvin guide lists which bulbs to buy, and how dim a nursery light should be for a night feed covers the brightness side.

A switch on the lamp body is the one you will use at 3am, because it is within reach of the chair and needs no wiring change. The other two have their place, and where each sits relative to the crib decides it.
- Switch on the body: reachable from the feeding chair, so the overhead light stays off. The catch is that a child who can reach the lamp can reach the switch, which is why the mounting height and the 24 in (61 cm) gap in the next section do the safety work. A rotary knob is better than a rocker here: it needs a twist a small hand cannot manage.
- Wall switch by the door: the lamp is out of reach by design, but you cross the room in the dark to turn it on. It suits a hardwired sconce that shares a circuit with a switched outlet, and it is the standard for a hallway-side nursery where the door is the natural entry point.
- Dimmer: the best night-feed control, and the one with 2 failure modes. It needs a bulb labelled dimmable, and LED bulbs on an old dimmer buzz or flicker at low settings. Why LED wall lights buzz on a dimmer switch explains the minimum-load problem before you buy one.
Cords are the hidden switch question. Texas Children's Hospital's crib checklist keeps window-blind cords, drapery and wall lamps at least 2 ft from the crib, and a plug-in lamp adds a cord of its own to that list. Houseland's bear sconce is hardwired to a standard wall box on 90 to 260 V, with no visible cord after installation, and its switch is a rotary knob on the lamp body, so the on and off happens at the lamp rather than at a plug on the floor.
How High and How Far From the Crib Should It Go?
Mount it at least 24 in (61 cm) sideways from the nearest crib rail, with the bottom of the shade above 39.4 in (100 cm) from the floor, and centre it on the feeding chair rather than on the crib. Do it in this order.
- Measure 24 in (61 cm) horizontally from the crib rail and draw a pencil line on the wall. Texas Children's Hospital's checklist says to place the crib at least 2 ft from heating vents, windows, blind cords, drapery or wall lamps and 1 ft from walls and furniture; the lamp goes on the far side of that line. What goes wrong: the crib gets moved 6 in (15 cm) later and the gap vanishes, so measure from where the crib will live, not where it is today.
- Set the bottom of the shade above 39.4 in (100 cm). CENELEC Guide 29, Table 1, gives 1.00 m as the arm's reach from the floor for a child under 2 and 1.50 m, or 59 in, for ages 2 to 6. A child standing in a crib starts from the mattress, not the floor, which is why the sideways gap in step 1 matters more than height alone.
- Centre the fixture on the chair, not the crib. Modern Place's sconce height guide puts bedroom reading sconces about 60 in (152 cm) from the floor to the centre of the box, and bedside fixtures 30 to 36 in above the mattress. For a nursing chair, sit in it, have someone mark the wall a few inches above your shoulder, and use that mark. What goes wrong: mounting at standing eye level, 66 in (168 cm) or more, puts the bulb in your eyes every time you look up from the chair.
- Aim the beam at the wall or the chair, never across the crib. A swivel joint lets you point the dome at the page or the changing table; the bear sconce has a chrome swivel that rotates and tilts and holds its position once set, with a shade 7.1 in (18 cm) wide.
- Check it from the mattress. Lie or crouch at crib-mattress height and look at the lamp: the answer is a lit dome, not a bare bulb. If you can see the filament or the LED chip, tilt the shade down until you cannot.
For scale, the WHO height-for-age table puts a median 2-year-old boy at 34.3 in (87 cm) and a median 3-year-old at 37.8 in (96 cm). By 3 the reach-from-floor figure has moved to 59 in (150 cm), so a lamp a 2-year-old cannot touch is one a 3-year-old can; the sideways gap is the rule that keeps working.

Who Should Buy Which Nursery Light?
Buy a hardwired wall sconce if you own the wall or have a wall box already, a plug-in sconce with a cord cover if you rent, and a battery night light if the room has no reachable box and no free outlet.
- Owners with a wall box beside the chair: a hardwired sconce with a body switch, one per 54 to 108 sq ft of room. The bear sconce covers 5 to 10 sq m, which is 54 to 108 sq ft, on one E27 bulb; a nursery bigger than that wants 2 fixtures or a ceiling light for the day and the sconce for the night.
- Renters: a plug-in sconce or a floor-standing alternative, with the cord routed above 39.4 in (100 cm) and clipped. A plug-in version of any wall lamp trades the no-cord safety for a landlord-friendly install, so the cord run becomes the thing you plan.
- Anyone whose crib sits under the only wall box: skip the wall lamp on that wall. Move the fixture to the chair wall or use a ceiling light on a dimmer; a sconce within 24 in (61 cm) of the crib fails the hospital checklist however cool it runs.
- Parents planning past the nursery: pick a shape that survives to a big-kid room. A generic bear or cloud silhouette outlasts a licensed character, and 8 colour options let it be repainted around rather than replaced.
The wall lamps collection lists the hardwired sconces with their socket type and shade material on each page, so the 5 checks above can be run from the spec table before anything ships.
What I'd do
Run the 5 checks in the order the table gives them, and let a listing fail on the first one it misses. Then buy the bulb before the lamp arrives: a 2700K dimmable LED of 8 W or less, so the 1-hour shade test can happen the day the box is opened. If the wall you have in mind is the crib wall, read hardwired animal wall sconce for a kids room, step by step before drilling; moving the fixture 24 in (61 cm) sideways at the planning stage costs nothing, and moving it after the plaster is patched costs a weekend.
