Pendant lights over a kitchen peninsula go 1 for a counter under 3 ft, 2 for 3 to 5 ft and 3 for 5 to 8 ft, counted along the counter from the wall end to the free end. Those bands are not a designer's taste; they fall out of the two spacing figures Dominion Lighting publishes for kitchen islands, 24 to 30 in (61 to 76 cm) centre to centre and at least 6 in (15 cm) in from each end, once you stop treating the peninsula as a room-centred island and start treating it as a counter with one end nailed to the wall.
Peninsula pendants follow the same height rule as island pendants, 30 to 36 in (76 to 91 cm) from counter to the bottom of the shade, which Visual Comfort calls the standard. The count and the placement are where the island advice goes wrong, because an island is walked around on 4 sides and a peninsula on 3. Houseland's soft dome pendant is sold as single fixtures in a 9.8 in (25 cm) or 11.8 in (30 cm) shade, so the count below is a shopping list rather than a fixed bar you have to make fit.

How many pendant lights over a kitchen peninsula, by counter length?
Count by the counter's length from the wall to the free end, and the answer is 1, 2 or 3 in almost every kitchen. The bands come from arithmetic: 2 pendants need 6 in (15 cm) of end margin, 24 in (61 cm) between centres and 6 in (15 cm) again, which is 36 in (91 cm), so 2 pendants start to fit at 3 ft; 3 pendants at the same 24 in (61 cm) pitch need 60 in (152 cm), so 3 start at 5 ft, and at the looser 30 in (76 cm) pitch they need 72 in (183 cm), which is 6 ft. Visual Comfort's guide says the same thing without the numbers: 2 for smaller islands, 3 for larger ones, and either can be forced the other way by choosing bigger or smaller shades.
| Peninsula length (wall to free end) | Pendants | Centre-to-centre spacing | Shade to pick |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 3 ft (36 in / 91 cm) | 1 | None; centre it on the usable length | 9.8 in (25 cm) |
| 3 to 5 ft | 2 | 24 to 30 in (61 to 76 cm) | 9.8 in (25 cm) on a narrow counter, 11.8 in (30 cm) on a wide one |
| 5 to 8 ft | 3 | 24 to 30 in (61 to 76 cm) | 9.8 in (25 cm) so 3 domes do not crowd the sight line |
| Over 8 ft | 3 at 30 in (76 cm) pitch, or 4 at 24 in (61 cm) | 24 to 30 in (61 to 76 cm) | 9.8 in (25 cm) for 4, 11.8 in (30 cm) for 3 |
The gap at the free end matters more than the gap at the wall. Dominion's 6 in (15 cm) minimum stops the last pendant hanging over the corner where a stool tucks in, and Hangout Lighting's island guide widens the same margin to 6 to 12 in (15 to 30 cm) so the run reads centred on the counter rather than teetering off its end. On a 4 ft (48 in / 122 cm) peninsula, 2 pendants at 24 in (61 cm) centres leave 12 in (30 cm) at each end, which sits inside both figures.
Why is a peninsula measured from the wall end instead of centred like an island?
Because the wall end is not a working end. Wikipedia's kitchen island entry gives about 40 in (102 cm) of clearance on every side of a free island, so island pendants are centred on a slab people circle; a peninsula has that clearance on 3 sides and a wall, a tall cabinet or a run of base units on the fourth. The usable length is what is left after you subtract the part nobody can reach across: measure from the face of the wall or the return cabinet to the outer edge of the free end, not from the room's corner.
Then apply Visual Comfort's placement rule to that usable figure rather than the whole counter. For 2 pendants, divide the usable length by 4 and set each pendant that far in from its own end; for 3, put the middle one dead centre and the outer 2 one third of the length in from each end. A 60 in (152 cm) peninsula with 2 pendants therefore gets them 15 in (38 cm) in from the wall and 15 in (38 cm) in from the free end, 30 in (76 cm) apart, which lands exactly on the top of the published spacing band.
The other axis is the counter's depth. A standard base cabinet counter is 25 to 26 in (64 to 66 cm) front to back per Wikipedia's countertop entry, and a seating peninsula adds an overhang on the stool side, so centre the pendants on the full depth including the overhang, not on the cabinet line. Off by 4 in (10 cm) and the domes read as belonging to the kitchen side, which is the most common thing that looks wrong in photographs of a bar with 2 pendants.

How far apart and how high should peninsula pendants hang?
Hang them with the bottom of the shade 30 to 36 in (76 to 91 cm) above the counter, spaced 24 to 30 in (61 to 76 cm) centre to centre. Visual Comfort states the 30 to 36 in (76 to 91 cm) band as the standard and adds that taller ceilings push you toward 36 in (91 cm) and lower ceilings toward 30 in (76 cm); Dominion Lighting gives the same band and warns that beyond 40 in (102 cm) the light source is too far from the surface to be useful for task work.
- Counter to shade: 30 to 36 in (76 to 91 cm). With a finished counter at 35 to 36 in (89 to 91 cm) off the floor, that puts the shade rim 65 to 72 in (165 to 183 cm) above the floor, which is above the eyes of most people standing and well above anyone on a 24 in (61 cm) counter stool.
- Centre to centre: 24 to 30 in (61 to 76 cm). Closer than 24 in (61 cm) and the pools of light merge into one bright band with a hot middle; wider than 30 in (76 cm) and a dark stripe appears on the counter between them.
- Free end margin: 6 to 12 in (15 to 30 cm). The last pendant should sit inside the end, never over the corner stool.
- Ceiling boxes: one per pendant. A cord pendant hangs from a ceiling outlet box, and the IRC's E3905.6.2 requires a lighting box to carry a luminaire up to 50 lb (22.7 kg), so the weight is never the issue; the number and position of boxes is, and each new position is an electrician's job.
Set the drop with the cord, not the box. Houseland's pendant has an adjustable cord you set at install, and its own listing tells you to fix the hanging height before final tightening and to check it standing at the counter rather than from across the room, which is the same order of operations Visual Comfort describes for any adjustable-cord fixture.

View the soft dome pendant light — 2 shade sizes & current priceWhich shade size suits a narrow peninsula, and which a wide one?
Take the smaller shade on a peninsula that is 25 to 26 in (64 to 66 cm) deep with no seating, and the larger one only when the counter is wider than 36 in (91 cm) or carries just 1 or 2 pendants. Dominion Lighting puts residential island shades between 6 and 12 in (15 and 30 cm) in diameter, smaller looks lost and larger looks heavy, and both of Houseland's sizes, 9.8 in (25 cm) and 11.8 in (30 cm), sit inside that band; the product page's peninsula line is that the 25 cm shade is narrow enough to run 2 or 3 in a line over a bar without crowding the sight line across the room.
Sight line is the whole argument on a peninsula, because a peninsula almost always faces the living or dining side. Lumens' kitchen lighting guide says that where an island faces an open living area you want fixtures that do not create a visual barrier, and 3 domes of 11.8 in (30 cm) hung at 30 in (76 cm) above a 4 ft bar make a solid 35 in (89 cm) of shade across a 48 in (122 cm) span. Three 9.8 in (25 cm) domes on the same bar cover 29 in (74 cm), leaving 19 in (48 cm) of open air between and beside them.
Test it before you order anything. Lumens' tip is to cut cardboard circles at the shade diameter and hold them at the planned height over the counter; Hangout Lighting suggests painter's tape on the ceiling for the same purpose. Two circles of 9.8 in (25 cm) and 11.8 in (30 cm) cost nothing and settle the size argument in 5 minutes.

When does the count change?
The count changes when part of the counter is not lit surface, when the ceiling is low, or when there is already a box in the wrong place.
- Upper cabinets or a wall return cover the first 12 to 24 in (30 to 61 cm). Subtract that stretch and count on what is left; a 6 ft peninsula with a 24 in (61 cm) cabinet return over the wall end is a 4 ft peninsula for lighting purposes and gets 2 pendants, not 3.
- A cooktop or sink sits in the peninsula. Keep the pendant over the task, not the seating, and let the shade hang at the low end of the band, 30 in (76 cm), so the pool is tight.
- The ceiling is under 8 ft. A 30 in (76 cm) drop over a 36 in (91 cm) counter leaves the rim at 66 in (168 cm) with an 8 ft (96 in / 244 cm) ceiling, so the cord is short and every extra pendant is another object at head height; use the 9.8 in (25 cm) shade and 1 fewer than the table says if the room feels crowded.
- One existing ceiling box, off centre. Either accept 1 pendant over the box and move it at the next remodel, or have an electrician add boxes; the fixtures are sold singly at $124.99 to $134.99 each, so adding a third later to match is straightforward if you buy the same colour.
- The peninsula is a raised bar at 42 in (107 cm). The height band is measured from the higher surface, so the shade rim ends up 72 to 78 in (183 to 198 cm) off the floor; keep to 30 in (76 cm) or the light gets thin on the lower counter behind it.
What I'd do
Measure from the wall face to the outer lip of the free end, write down the depth including the overhang, and read the count off the table: 1 under 3 ft, 2 to 5 ft, 3 to 8 ft. Mark the centres on the ceiling with tape, 24 to 30 in (61 to 76 cm) apart and never closer than 6 in (15 cm) to the free end, then hold cardboard discs at 30 to 36 in (76 to 91 cm) above the counter and look at them from the sofa, because that is the view the peninsula faces. If the discs block the room, drop to the 9.8 in (25 cm) shade before you drop the count. Choose the bulb after the fixture; the E27 socket on the Houseland dome takes any standard screw-base LED, and the lumens question is answered in what bulb goes in an E27 pendant over a kitchen island. Before the electrician arrives, measure for the ceiling light the way that article lays out, and if you are weighing this fixture against a marketplace listing, the spec-by-spec comparison is the honest place to start. The rest of the wall lamps and pendants range is there if the dome shape is not yours.
