A pendant hung wrong height over island is almost always hung too high, and the fix is to shorten the cord at the canopy until the bottom of the shade sits 30 to 36 in (76 to 91 cm) above the counter. Higher than that and you are looking up into an open drum from below, which is the glare you are actually complaining about. Nothing gets rewired: the whole adjustment happens inside the small cup pressed against the ceiling.

Why does a pendant hung wrong height over island bother you so much?
Because the open bottom of the drum is pointed at your face. A drum shade blocks the bulb from the sides and does nothing underneath it, so the only thing keeping the filament out of your eyes is where the rim sits against your eye line. An adult standing at the counter has an eye line near 63 in (160 cm) off the floor. Set the shade bottom 30 to 36 in (76 to 91 cm) above a 36 in (91 cm) counter and the rim lands at 66 to 72 in (168 to 183 cm), just clear of your eyes, and the metal sides do the shading. Hang the same fixture 42 in (107 cm) over the counter and the rim sits at 78 in (198 cm), a good 15 in (38 cm) above your eye line, and from the far side of the island you are staring straight up into a lit drum. Raise the rim past 36 in (91 cm) over the counter and you stop seeing light and start seeing the bulb.
Height also decides how much of the counter gets useful light. Straight sides and an open bottom throw a broad pool rather than a spot, and that pool widens and thins the higher you go. Houseland's FAQ for this pendant gives the range as roughly 30 to 36 inches from the surface to the bottom of the shade, and tells you to confirm it visually while seated before finalizing, which is the step everyone skips and then regrets.
How do I shorten the cord at the canopy without rewiring?
Kill the breaker, drop the canopy, pull the slack flex up into the ceiling box, and reset the cord grip so the grip carries the weight instead of the terminals.

- Switch off the breaker and confirm the fixture is dead with a contact tester. A wall switch on its own is not proof.
- Measure what you have. Hook the tape on the counter and read to the bottom of the shade, not to the bulb. If it reads 44 in (112 cm), you are taking out 8 to 14 in (20 to 36 cm).
- Loosen the canopy, usually two small screws or a knurled ring under the cup, and slide it down the cord to expose the terminal block.
- Find the cord grip inside the canopy. It is the screw or wedge clamping the flex, and once it is loose the cord slides freely.
- Pull the slack up into the ceiling box and coil it in there. Do not cut it: coiled flex is reversible and cut flex is not.
- Retighten the grip, then give the shade a firm downward tug. The conductors at the terminals should not move at all.
- Slide the canopy back up, tighten it, and measure again from the counter to the shade's bottom edge. You are aiming for 30 to 36 in (76 to 91 cm).
- Sit on a stool and look across the island before the tools go away. If the bulb shows from the far side, take out another 2 in (5 cm).
- Match the second pendant to the first within 1/4 in (6 mm). Lay a straightedge across both rims, because a mismatch that size is visible from the doorway.
None of that touches the ceiling box, the mounting bracket or the wiring, so a fixture that was safe before is safe after. If the cord is already at its shortest and the shade still hangs 42 in (107 cm) over the counter, the flex is not your problem: either the box is in the wrong place along the island, or someone fitted a fixed rod stem instead of a cord. I went through the height math for both cases in how high a pendant light should hang above a kitchen island, and the short version is that the counter sets the number, not the ceiling.
How does the drop change between an 8 ft ceiling and a 10 ft ceiling?
It does not change. The gap above the counter stays put; what changes is the length of cord between the canopy and the shade.
| Ceiling height | Counter height | Shade rim, off the floor | Ceiling to rim, cord you need |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 ft (96 in / 244 cm) | 36 in (91 cm) | 66 to 72 in (168 to 183 cm) | 24 to 30 in (61 to 76 cm) |
| 9 ft (108 in / 274 cm) | 36 in (91 cm) | 66 to 72 in (168 to 183 cm) | 36 to 42 in (91 to 107 cm) |
| 10 ft (120 in / 305 cm) | 36 in (91 cm) | 66 to 72 in (168 to 183 cm) | 48 to 54 in (122 to 137 cm) |
| 8 ft (96 in / 244 cm) | 42 in (107 cm) bar top | 72 to 78 in (183 to 198 cm) | 18 to 24 in (46 to 61 cm) |

The last row is where people come unstuck. A 42 in (107 cm) bar-height island under an 8 ft (244 cm) ceiling leaves only 18 to 24 in (46 to 61 cm) of ceiling-to-rim space, and a long-cord fixture will not compress into that, so you either shorten hard or you live with a rim at 78 in (198 cm) that glares at everyone seated. Below 8 ft the numbers run out sooner still, which is the case I worked through in pendant height above a dining table with a low ceiling, and the answer there is a smaller diameter and a shorter drop rather than a heroic cord.
Two pendants or three over the same island?
Two 11.8 in (30 cm) shades suit a typical island and three suit a longer one, and on a narrow island three 9.8 in (25 cm) shades read better than two large ones.
| Two 11.8 in (30 cm) | Three 11.8 in (30 cm) | Three 9.8 in (25 cm) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Island it suits | Typical | Longer | Narrow |
| Gap between centers | 30 in (76 cm) | 24 in (61 cm) | 24 in (61 cm) |
| Light pool per shade | Widest | Widest | Narrower, more even across the run |
| Reads as | Statement | Statement, repeated | Accent |
| Bulbs to buy separately | 2 x E27 | 3 x E27 | 3 x E27 |
Spacing is arithmetic, not taste. Divide the island by the number of pendants, set the centers 24 to 30 in (61 to 76 cm) apart, and leave the clearance at the ends rather than bunching everything at the middle. On a 72 in (183 cm) island, two pendants 30 in (76 cm) apart leave 21 in (53 cm) of counter clear at each end, which is where the toaster and the fruit bowl actually live. Houseland lists five colors and two diameters for this shade, so if two black drums read heavy over a small island, the same fixture in white at 9.8 in (25 cm) fixes it without a new hole in the ceiling. I go into counts and gaps at more length in pendant light spacing over a kitchen island, and there is more of the range in the wall lamps collection if you want to compare finishes first.

The cord is adjustable, so you set the 30 to 36 in (76 to 91 cm) drop yourself rather than living with whatever length arrived. Pick 11.8 in (30 cm) for a standard island, or 9.8 in (25 cm) if you are running three across a narrow one.
See the wide drum colorful pendant lightWhich bulb should go in an E27 pendant over an island?
A frosted, dimmable E27 LED around 2,700 K, and no more than about 800 lumens per shade if you are hanging two of them. E27 is the standard large screw base used across most of the world, so check the box says E27 and not a smaller candelabra base, because the two look close on a shelf and the small one will not seat. A clear 60 W equivalent in an open-bottom drum is the most common cause of glare that survives a correct 33 in (84 cm) drop, and a frosted lamp at the same 800 lumens ends it. The product FAQ is clear that the bulb is a separate purchase and that the socket is replaceable rather than a sealed integrated LED, which is the detail that matters in five years when the color shifts. LED is the sensible choice here anyway, because the metal shade sits close to the bulb.
Dimming is where people get caught out. The fixture has no dimmer of its own, so you need a dimmable E27 bulb on a compatible dimmer switch, and both halves have to be right or you get buzz, flicker, or nothing below full brightness. A smart E27 skips the switch and gives you app dimming and color temperature control without changing the fixture. If glare survives a correct drop and a frosted bulb, the problem is the switch, not the pendant.

What would I fix first?
The height, tonight, before you buy anything. Put a tape on the counter and read to the rim: over 36 in (91 cm) and you have a screwdriver job, not a shopping problem. Inside that band and still glaring, and it is the bulb, so try a frosted 2,700 K E27 before you touch the cord again. Only after both of those does the fixture become the question, and then the question is diameter: 11.8 in (30 cm) if you want the shade to carry the island, 9.8 in (25 cm) if three across a narrow run suits it better.
What I would not do is settle at 40 in (102 cm) because that is where the cord happened to land. The rim either clears your eye line by a few inches or it does not, and 4 in (10 cm) is the whole difference between a lit chopping board and a bulb in your face.
