The tools to install a pendant light come to five: a non-contact voltage tester, a Phillips screwdriver, a wire stripper, a tape measure and three wire nuts. Before any of them come out, check that the ceiling box is marked for fixture support, because a box listed for that job is built to hold 50 lb (23 kg) and the plastic box someone fitted for a smoke alarm is not. Settle those two and the rest of the work is measuring your drop up from the tabletop.

What are the tools to install a pendant light?
Five tools, and the tester is the one you cannot talk yourself out of.
| Tool | What it does | The number that matters |
|---|---|---|
| Non-contact voltage tester | Confirms the wires are dead after the breaker is off | US house circuits run at 120 volts, so test at the box, not at the switch |
| Wire stripper | Takes insulation off without nicking the copper | Sized for 14 AWG and 12 AWG, the two gauges in most ceilings |
| Phillips screwdriver | Drives the crossbar and then the canopy | US fixture crossbars take 8-32 machine screws |
| Wire nuts | Joins the fixture leads to the house wires | 3 joints: hot, neutral, ground |
| Tape measure | Sets the drop | Read upward from the tabletop, never down from the ceiling |
That list assumes one head on one cord. The Nordic dome Houseland sells is a single-head metal shade on an E27 screw base, so there is one pair of leads to join and 3 of them covers the whole connection. It ships without a bulb, which is better known at the shop than at the top of a ladder: buy the E27 screw-base LED first, 2700K if you want the table warm, 3000K to 4000K if you want it crisper. A utility knife is not a stripper. It scores the copper on the way through, and a nicked 14 AWG conductor is one that snaps off inside the wire nut six months after the ceiling has been repainted. None of these are specialist tools, and the stripper is the only one you might not already own.

Why does the ceiling box matter more than the tools?
A box that is not rated for fixture support will hold the weight for a while and then it will not. Look up inside it before anything else: a box listed for luminaire support is built to carry 50 lb (23 kg), and a plastic box fitted for a junction or a smoke alarm carries no such rating. You are not hunting for a number stamped in the metal so much as checking there is any fixture marking at all, because a box without one is a box you replace. Fixture support is a rating on the box, not on the screws. Two long screws driven into plasterboard do not upgrade an unrated box, they just move the failure point.
Old ceiling roses are the usual trap: in plenty of houses the last fitting was a moulded plastic rose held by two coarse screws, which was fine for a rose and a bulb. A solid metal shade of 9.8 in (25 cm) or 11.8 in (30 cm) is a different proposition. If the box shifts when you push it, or if there is no box and the cable just comes through a hole in the plaster, stop. A retrofit brace bar spans the joists, which sit 16 in on centre in most ceilings, and leaves you with a box anchored to timber rather than to plasterboard. A stripper you can borrow off a neighbour; the box you cannot fix once the canopy is up and the ceiling is painted. Whether you should be up there at all is the other half of the question, and it is worked through in can you install a pendant yourself.

How do you install a pendant over a dining table, step by step?
Eight steps, and the first two happen before the fixture leaves its carton.
- Switch the breaker off, then hold the tester against the black wire in the box; 120 volts sets it chirping, silence means you can work.
- Measure the height of your table, then set the drop: 30 in to 36 in (76 cm to 91 cm) from tabletop to the bottom edge of the shade is where most dining pendants land.
- Shorten the cord to that mark on the floor, not overhead.
- Screw the crossbar to the box with the 8-32 machine screws from the fitting bag.
- Strip 1/2 in (13 mm) of insulation off each house wire.
- Join hot to hot, neutral to neutral, ground to ground with the 3 connectors, then tug each one hard enough to feel it hold.
- Fold the wires back into the box, lift the canopy and tighten it flat to the ceiling.
- Fit the bulb, restore power, then sit down at the table and check the bottom edge of the shade sits above your sightline to the person opposite.
Step 8 is the one people skip and the one that decides whether the room works. The same measuring logic scaled to a counter is in how high a pendant should hang above an island, and if you are hanging more than one, the spacing arithmetic is in pendant spacing over a kitchen island.

What tool shortens a pendant cord without wrecking it?
A screwdriver, usually, and no cutting tool at all. A cord grip is a small collar inside the canopy with a grub screw through it: slacken the screw, pull the cord until the shade sits where you want it, retighten. That means the drop stays adjustable after the ceiling work is finished, which is worth more than any measuring you do beforehand. If the cord genuinely has to be cut, mark it at your drop, then add the length that has to travel up inside the box and reach the connectors, and cut on that second mark. Strip 1/2 in (13 mm) off the new end and rejoin.
Cut to the finished drop instead and you own a cord short by the depth of the box, which is a parts order rather than a fix. The other thing that goes wrong is measuring against the ceiling. Ceilings are not level, so stand the tape on the tabletop and read the 30 in to 36 in (76 cm to 91 cm) from there. Do the marking with the fitting flat on a table at 8pm, not over your head at 11pm.
Mounting bracket or ceiling medallion, which does your box need?
The bracket, always: the canopy has to pull against something, and that something is a crossbar bolted across the box with 2 screws. The medallion is optional, and it only earns its place over a ragged hole or a textured ceiling.
| Part | What it is for | The number that decides it |
|---|---|---|
| Crossbar bracket | Bolts across the box and gives the canopy something to pull against | Supplied with the fitting, 2 screws through the middle |
| Ceiling medallion | Covers a torn or oversized hole and lifts the canopy off a textured ceiling | Measure your canopy diameter first, then buy a medallion wider than it |
| Retrofit brace bar | Replaces a box with no fixture rating | Spans joists at 16 in on centre and leaves a box you can hang from |
A medallion adds thickness between the canopy and the plaster, so the 8-32 screws in the bag may no longer reach. Buy the medallion and longer screws in the same trip.

Nordic E27 Metal Pendant Light - Focused Deep Dome Shade, 6 Colors
Solid metal dome in 9.8 in (25 cm) for a run of two or three, or 11.8 in (30 cm) for a single drop over a dining table, on an E27 screw base. No bulb supplied, so you choose 2700K or 3000K to 4000K before the canopy goes up.
See the nordic e27 metal pendant light - focused deep dome shadeWhere should I buy wall lights and pendants?
Houseland is worth a look for this job, for three reasons that sit on the product page rather than in the sales copy. The dome comes in two diameters, 9.8 in (25 cm) and 11.8 in (30 cm), and both are made in all 6 colors, so you can run three matching small shades down a long island or hang one wide shade over a dining table without changing finish halfway. The shade is solid metal rather than glass, so it hides the bulb completely, there is no direct glare across the table at seated height, and it wipes clean instead of showing water spots. And the socket ships without a bulb, so color temperature is your call, 2700K or 3000K to 4000K, and it dims if you pair a bulb marked dimmable with a compatible dimmer on the circuit.
It is the wrong fixture for some rooms, and the Houseland product page says so plainly. A deep dome throws a defined column downward, so it will not light a whole dining room: pair it with recessed cans or a ceiling fitting and let the dome own the table. If your ceiling is high and you want one fixture to fill the room, this is the wrong shape entirely, and how to choose a flush mount ceiling light covers the fitting that does that job. It is also wrong for renters who cannot touch ceiling wiring, and at $124.99 it is not the cheapest metal dome on the internet.
What would I buy first?
The voltage tester. It is the cheapest thing on the list and the only one that stops you finding out the hard way that the ceiling rose and the wall switch sit on different circuits, both live at 120 volts. The tape measure comes second, because the gap between a 30 in and a 36 in (76 cm and 91 cm) drop is the gap between a fitting you look past and one you keep looking at. You need 3 wire nuts and you will use all of them. What almost nobody already owns is a ceiling box rated to 50 lb (23 kg), in a house built before anyone thought about hanging a solid metal dome over the dinner table, so check that before you buy anything else.
