Almost always less than the frame could take, because the wall is the limit. How much weight can floating shelves hold is a question people ask about the shelf and should ask about the fixing — a steel frame on two plastic plugs holds less than a timber one on two proper anchors.
Metal frames are stronger in isolation. In a real plasterboard wall that strength is rarely the thing being tested.
The Houseland modules are rated up to 5 kg (11 lb) each, which is a conservative figure chosen to hold on an ordinary wall.

How much weight can floating shelves hold in practice
Three things have to hold, and the weakest decides everything.
The shelf itself. Timber can deflect over a long span; a welded metal frame usually will not.
The joint between shelf and fixing. A keyhole hanger, a bracket plate, a welded lug.
The fixing in the wall. The anchor, and what it is anchored into.
In a plasterboard wall the third is nearly always the weakest, which is why a rating on the box tells you less than you would like.
A useful mental model: the shelf is a lever and the anchor is the pivot. Anything you can do to shorten the lever or strengthen the pivot beats a stronger shelf.
Where metal genuinely is stronger
A welded steel frame does not sag. Over a long unsupported span that matters, because timber creeps under sustained load and the droop does not come back when you unload it.
Metal is also thinner for the same stiffness, so a metal shelf can be visually lighter while holding more.
And a metal frame concentrates load at its fixing points rather than distributing it, which is fine into studs and unhelpful into board.
So the honest version is: metal is stronger where it is fixed into something solid, and no stronger at all where it is not.

The second row is the practical one. A wire shelf that cannot hold a round pot upright is not holding much of anything, whatever the frame is rated for.
There is a hidden cost to a metal frame that only shows up on a hollow wall: the fixing points are usually few and small. A welded lug concentrates everything into one anchor, where a timber module with two widely spaced keyhole hangers spreads the same load across two. On plasterboard that difference matters more than the frame material does.

Rough working figures, per fixing, for a decorative load in plasterboard:
- Plastic expansion plug: very little, and it fails suddenly.
- Self-drive plastic anchor: light loads only.
- Metal expanding anchor: comfortable for shelves and wall pieces.
- Spring toggle: the strongest hollow-wall option.
- Wood screw into a stud: more than any of the above, by a distance.
Two metal anchors will carry a decorative shelf and its contents without complaint. Two plastic plugs will not, and the shelf material makes no difference to that.

Leverage, which is the number nobody quotes
Weight sitting at the front edge of a shelf does not press down on the fixing. It tries to rotate the piece away from the wall, pulling the top fixing outward.
Anchors are much weaker in that direction than they are straight down, which is why a deep shelf strains a wall more than a shallow one with the same load.
Two consequences worth acting on: keep heavy objects towards the back, and prefer shallow shelves where the wall is hollow.
The Houseland modules are 3.5 in deep, which keeps the lever short by design.
How to tell what your shelf is doing
- Press down gently at the front edge. If it moves, the fixing is rotating.
- Look at the top edge against the wall. A gap opening there is the classic warning.
- Check the paint above the fixings for hairline cracks.
- Try each screw by hand. One that turns freely means the anchor has gone.
- Look along the shelf with it empty. A droop is deflection, not a fixing problem.
Two of those five are fixing faults, one is a material fault, and knowing which you have decides whether the answer is a new anchor or a shorter span.
Do the check twice: once on the day, and once a week later. Anchors bed in as they take load, and the difference between an anchor that has settled and one that is slowly working loose only becomes visible over a few days.
If you need real capacity
Stop comparing shelves and change the fixing.
Into studs transforms what any shelf will hold, in either material.
A batten across two studs, with the shelf mounted to it, spreads load into the framing and frees you from stud positions.
A hidden bracket system with rods into studs carries far more than a hung module, at the cost of being permanent — the trade is in keyhole hangers against hidden brackets.
What does not work is a stronger shelf on the same weak anchors, which is the upgrade people most often buy.

Reading ratings honestly
Check whether a figure is per shelf or per set, whether it assumes an evenly distributed load or a point load, and which wall it assumes.
A number quoted for a fixing into solid timber says very little about a plasterboard wall, and that difference is larger than any difference between materials.
Where a listing does not say, assume the most conservative reading.
And remember that ratings are static. A shelf that gets leaned on, or that a child might pull, sees forces well above the weight sitting on it — the point made in what a load rating means.
Ratings also assume the shelf is level and evenly supported. A module hung a degree out puts more of its load onto one fixing than the other, so the published figure quietly stops applying the moment the piece is crooked — another reason to level with the piece hanging rather than trusting the marks.
What I would do
Choose the shelf on looks and on what it has to hold flat, then spend the effort on anchors.
Two metal expanding anchors per module, weight towards the back, heavier modules low, and a check the day after loading.
If the plan involves books or anything a person might lean on, go into studs or fit a batten. That decision, not the choice between wire and wood, is what determines whether a shelf is still level in five years.
