Yes: on standard 0.5 in (12.7 mm) drywall you can install floating shelf yourself with a drill, a 24 in (61 cm) spirit level and the fixings that came in the box, and the only real decision is whether you hit a stud at 16 in (40.6 cm) centres or trust the load rating printed on the anchor packet. Hire a fitter when the wall is brick, tile or old lath, or when that printed rating is lower than what you plan to stand on the shelf. Everything between those two cases is one person, one drill and a pencil line you check twice.

Can you install floating shelf yourself on drywall?
One person, on drywall, start to finish. Width is what turns it into a two person job, not weight: a 47.2 in (120 cm) panel sits inside most people's reach, and a 55 in (140 cm) one does not, so one end drifts while your other hand hunts for the mark. Houseland lists that piece in both widths, 47.2 in (120 cm) by 15.7 in (40 cm) tall and 55 in (140 cm) by 17.7 in (45 cm) tall, and the fixing method is the same either way.
What actually goes wrong is never the shelf snapping in half. It is the anchor pulling a cone of board out from behind the plaster, which happens when the hole was drilled oversize, or when a fixing meant for a light load is asked to carry a row of hardbacks. That is a patch, a sand and two coats of touch up paint, so read how much weight a floating shelf really holds before you decide what lives on it, and if the one you already own has started to bow, fixing a sag without taking it down is usually possible.
What tools do you need to install a wall shelf?
Four things, and you probably own three of them: a drill, the bit named on the anchor packet, a 24 in (61 cm) spirit level and a pencil. A tape measure makes five. None of that is specific to shelving, which is why routing this question straight to paid installation reads oddly to me: you are paying a call out fee for someone to arrive with a drill.
- A drill you can hold steady at 57 in (145 cm) off the floor, which is above shoulder height for most people. Cordless helps, because a trailing cable pulls your hand off the mark.
- The bit size printed on the anchor packet, not the nearest one in the case. Drill oversize and the anchor spins inside 0.5 in (12.7 mm) of board instead of gripping it.
- A 24 in level, because a phone app levels the phone, and the phone is not sitting flat against the back of the panel.
- A pencil, and the patience to mark through the fixing holes in the hardware instead of measuring each one twice.
How do you drill and hang a shelf level without a laser?
Mark one horizontal line and stop measuring down from the ceiling. Ceilings are rarely level, floors are usually closer, and the bubble is the only thing in the room with no opinion.
- Set the height. Gallery centre is 57 in (145 cm) from the floor to the middle of the piece, and above a sofa the usual gap is 8 in (20 cm) from the top of the back cushion to the bottom edge. Pick one of those, not both.
- Find the timber. Knock across the wall with a knuckle: hollow, hollow, then a duller note is the stud. Mark it, step 16 in (40.6 cm) left and right, and knock again to confirm. A stud face is 1.5 in (38 mm) wide, so half an inch out is the same as missing it.
- Hold the hanging rail against your line, sit the level on top of it, and mark through every fixing hole in the hardware, not only the two at the ends.
- Cross check from the floor. Measure up to both end marks and compare the two numbers. If the tape and the bubble disagree, believe the bubble.
- Drill square to the wall with the bit the packet names. A hole driven at an angle through 0.5 in (12.7 mm) board comes out as an oval, and an oval will not hold an anchor.
- Fit every anchor supplied. If the rail has six holes and you use four because four looked like plenty, you have changed the rating and nothing on the wall will tell you.
- Hang it, put the level back on top, then load it. Anchors do not enjoy coming out and going back in.

How long does it take to hang a shelf? The drilling is the fast part. Finding a 1.5 in (38 mm) stud face, getting the level to sit still and marking six holes rather than two is where the time goes, and it depends on the wall: a timber stud wall is quicker than one where every knock sounds the same. Time your own first hole and you will know what the rest of them cost.
Stud or plasterboard anchor: which one actually holds?
A stud beats every anchor on the wall, and the back of the packet is the only honest source for what an anchor holds.
| Fixing | What it grips | How you confirm it | Where its rating comes from | How it fails |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Screw into a stud | Timber 1.5 in (38 mm) wide behind the board | Knock test, then a 16 in (40.6 cm) step left and right | The timber and the screw, nothing printed | Screw clips the edge of the 1.5 in (38 mm) face and spins |
| Plasterboard anchor | 0.5 in (12.7 mm) of board only | Drill dust stays white, no brown shavings | Printed in kg on the back of the packet | Pulls a cone of board out under load |
| Toggle or butterfly | The cavity behind the board | You feel the wings drop open | Printed in kg on the back of the packet | Wants a wider hole, and it will not come back out |
I am not going to print a kilogram figure here, because the number that matters is on the packet in your hand. Two anchors of the same diameter from two brands can be rated a long way apart. Weigh the piece on the bathroom scale, add what you intend to put on it, and compare that total against the printed rating before the drill comes out. Installing shelves without a stud finder is normal: the knock test plus a 16 in step gets you there, and if every knock on a lath wall sounds the same, that is the point to stop.

Does a backlit panel with a ledge hang the same way?
Yes, with one extra decision: the socket. Houseland's spec sheet lists the mounting as wall mounted and self contained and the supply as 90-260 V through the included adapter, so a standard 120 V outlet is all it needs and no electrician is involved. The cord exits at the back edge, so choose before you drill whether it runs down behind the sofa or into a paintable channel, because a channel moves the bottom edge and the bottom edge moves your pencil line.
The ledge carries a clear glass tube bud vase, which is the part people forget to allow for when they set the gap above the sofa back. Match the panel to the furniture and not to the wall: the 47.2 in (120 cm) size suits a sofa from about 72 in (183 cm) wide or a queen bed, the larger size suits an 84 in (213 cm) sofa or a king bed, and the aim is for the piece to span roughly two thirds of what sits below it. In the box: the panel, the glass vase, a remote, a mains adapter and the mounting hardware. The plants and the small figurine in the photos are styling and are not included.
Dimming is built in on every unit: the remote lowers the level, the touch switch on the panel does on and off, and no wall dimmer is involved. It is warm white and it washes the wall behind it rather than lighting the room, closer to a bias light than a reading lamp, so keep the lamp you already own. Two colourways, Sage and Walnut, and both hang on identical fixings. It is rated for dry indoor rooms only, and steam in the LED housing is not covered by the three year warranty.

When should you hire someone for shelving?
When the wall is not plasterboard or timber. Solid brick, concrete, tile over cement board and old lath all want a masonry bit, a hammer setting and fixings most people do not own, and a mistake in tile costs more than a tub of filler. Two other cases: the printed anchor rating is under the load you have in mind, or you cannot rule out a cable or a pipe on the line you have just drawn. A 55 in (140 cm) panel held at 57 in (145 cm) off the floor is a two person lift for most people, and if you cannot drill at all, wall hooks for renters who cannot drill are a different route to the same wall.
What would I buy first?
A 24 in (61 cm) spirit level, before the shelf. Every wall mistake I have made started with a mark I did not check, and a level costs less than filler and a tin of touch up paint. Then buy the piece by the wall it is going on: the rest of the wall shelves range is worth measuring for first, because the 47.2 in size wants a sofa of about 72 in (183 cm) under it or it looks stranded. If you are still weighing paid installation against doing it yourself, look at what the fitter arrives with: a drill, a level, and the same anchor packet with the same rating printed on the back.
